(KGTV) — Residents of East County's 50th Congressional District woke up to a new reality Monday: They no longer have representation in Congress. Congressman Duncan Hunter resigned after pleading guilty to a felony count of campaign fraud in December. "For two years now, we've had a member of Congress who didn't serve on any committees, and that's really where you help your district," said John Dadian, a political analyst who lives in Hunter's district. A 10News-Union-Tribune scientific poll released Monday is shedding light on who may have the best chance of taking over the seat. The SurveyUSA poll shows Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar leading a crowded field with 26 percent of the vote. Three Republicans come next: Former Congressman Darrell Issa is in second at 21 percent, former City Councilman Carl DeMaio is at 20 percent, and State Sen. Brian Jones is in third with 12 percent. The margin of error for the question was 5.7 percent. "This is a strongly Republican district with a good number of Democrats," said Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego. "Ammar Campa-Najjar looks very likely that he'll advance to November, but there are even more votes out there for Republicans."In 2018, Campa-Najjar narrowly lost to Hunter, who was indicted about three months before the election. Dadian said the poll is a snapshot in time, which could change quickly now that the holidays are over and the March primary is approaching. RELATED: Rep. The poll surveyed 618 district residents registered to vote in California. Of those, 512 were likely voters. A 66-year-old woman was arrested and preliminarily charged Wednesday with driving into protesters in Indiana.According to the Associated Press, the woman police arrested was Christi Bennett.Hundreds of people were rallying and protesting through Bloomington Monday, following an alleged racist attack at Lake Monroe where several men attacked and apparently attempted to lynch Vauhxx Booker, a Monroe County Human Rights commissioner.Police say an electric scooter had been left in the roadway and a red Toyota passenger car drove up to it. A male passenger then got out and threw the scooter out of the lane of travel. That's when police say a woman approached the vehicle and stood in front of it with her hands on the hood.The vehicle then began to accelerate, according to police, causing the woman to go up onto the hood of the car. A man then grabbed the car and clung to the side of it as it accelerated rapidly on Walnut Street. The man and woman remained on the vehicle until it turned abruptly onto eastbound 6th Street, throwing both people off, according to police.Police say the owner of the car was staying at a motel in Scottsburg, Indiana. They traveled to Scottsburg and detained the man and woman involved. The man was interviewed and released. Bennett was transported to the Bloomington Police Department to be interviewed, but she and her legal counsel declined to provide a statement.She was arrested on the following preliminary charges:Criminal Recklessness, level 6 felony (two counts)Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, level 6 felonyLeaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Bodily Injury, class A misdemeanor.Bennett was released on a 0 cash bond within a couple of hours, the AP reported.Bennett has not been formally charged.The Associated Press contributed to this story.WRTV's Matt McKinney first reported this story. 1896

(KGTV) -- Margaret Wardlow doesn’t dwell on what happened to her one night in 1977 - a night that she became victim number 27 of the Golden State Killer. Just because she doesn’t dwell on it, doesn’t mean she doesn’t remember. Wardlow was the youngest of the serial man's victims, just 13 when she was tied up in her Sacramento home and raped.On Wednesday Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested in connection with a series of killings, rapes and burglaries that occurred around the state in the 1970s and ‘80s. Authorities from jurisdictions across California gathered in Sacramento to announce the arrest of a suspect in the decades-long East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer case.RELATED: Suspect identified, arrested in East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer caseIt's an arrest that brought back the memories of that night for Wardlow. She says at first, she had no idea her attacker was the Golden State Killer - aka the east area rapist, aka the original night stalker in her home. It wasn't until she looked up at the clock and saw it was 2:30 a.m. that she realized who he was.  "'This is the east area rapist, and this is what’s going on,'" she recalls thinking. "It was time for me to realize, ‘I’m dealing with a serial rapist.'”The man also tied up her mom, stacking plates on top of her so he would know if she moved.What he didn't know about Wardlow is that before her attack, she was on top of every story that came out in the newspaper about him. Knowing that he seemed to thrive on powerless victims, when he asked in a harsh whisper, ‘Do you want to die? Now that it has, she’s thrilled for the other victims and their families and the diligent detectives who never gave up."I was really concerned that people would go to their graves without knowing who killed their loved ones," she said. When asked if she plans to attend the court dates of Joseph James DeAngelo, she told 10News she will, and wants to look him in the eyes and ask, "Why?"    2594
