SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Amazon.com on Monday announced that this past Black Friday was the best ever for its Kindle products with consumers buying four times as many Kindle e- readers and tablets as they did last year.According to the online retail giant, its newly launched tablet Kindle Fire was the bestselling product across all of Amazon.com on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, which falls on Nov. 25 this year, when major retailers in the United States traditionally offer big discounts.Kindle Fire is Amazon's answer to Apple's popular iPad. Priced at 199 U.S. dollars, the Amazon product is much cheaper than iPad which starts from 499 dollars.Survey results by research firm ChangeWave Research released days before Black Friday indicated that Amazon is poised to become the No. 2 player in the tablet computer market behind Apple, due to strong demand for Kindle Fire.Amazon said Black Friday sales also showed that a lot of customers were buying multiple Kindles, one for themselves and others as gifts. The trend is expected to continue through this holiday shopping season, Amazon's vice president of Kindle products Dave Limp said in a statement.

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will donate one million U.S. dollars to quake-hit Turkey, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu announced Friday.Jiang said that China has paid great attention to the situation since a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey on Sunday.Jiang noted that Premier Wen Jiabao sent a message of condolence to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan immediately after the quake. The Red Cross Society of China has also donated 50,000 U.S. dollars, and China will continue to offer emergency relief aid to Turkey, she added.According to the Turkish government, as of Friday morning, 570 people were dead and 2,250 injured after the powerful earthquake struck the province of Van in eastern Turkey on Sunday.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- China canceled over one-third of all official ceremonies, seminars and forums last year in a bid to avoid extravagance or corruption in the use of public resources. Some 2,549 such activities proposed by governments or public institutions, or 37.7 percent of the total applications, which were deemed "ceremonial" and "unnecessary," were cut, saving 1.22 billion yuan (about 193.39 million U.S. dollars), said an official statement released Sunday. The statement was issued by the State Council's Office for Rectifying Malpractices, a ministry-level inter-agency supervisory body dedicated to eliminating administrative irregularities and abuse of power in government agencies, public institutions and major service sectors.Last year's inspections focused on activities co-funded by ministries and local governments, the statement said. The Chinese government agreed with the public that the soaring number of official celebrations, seminars and forums would cost plenty of money and manpower and exacerbate corrupt behaviors. In March, the State Council, or China's Cabinet, ordered 98 ministries and ministry-level government organs to make public their budgets and expenditures on official overseas visits, public vehicles and official receptions -- the "three public consumptions" that had triggered widespread public concern.Premier Wen Jiabao also repeatedly urged the country's government agencies to reduce administrative expenses, including cutting the number of meetings and documents printed.Official figures indicate that the country's crackdown on various forms of extravagant spending by officials saved the country 5.7 billion yuan in 2010.A blue book on China's conferences published in November estimated that the total output of the country's conference industry had reached nearly 1 trillion yuan. Companies made up half of this total, while a considerable portion came from the government and public institutions compared to other social organizations.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- NASA plans to add an unmanned flight test of the Orion spacecraft in early 2014 to its contract with Lockheed Martin Space Systems for the multipurpose crew vehicle's design, development, test and evaluation, the U.S. space agency announced Tuesday. This test supports the new Space Launch System (SLS) that will take astronauts farther into space than ever before, and provide the cornerstone for America's future human spaceflight efforts."President Obama and Congress have laid out an ambitious space exploration plan, and NASA is moving out quickly to implement it," NASA Associate Administrator for Communications David Weaver said in a statement. "This flight test will provide invaluable data to support the deep space exploration missions this nation is embarking upon."Orion is part of the now defunct Constellation program canceled under President Barack Obama's 2011 budget proposal. Instead Obama urged NASA to work toward sending humans to an asteroid and then on to Mars -- and NASA says it wants to go ahead with that as quickly as possible. This Exploration Flight Test, or EFT-1, will fly two orbits to a high-apogee, with a high-energy re-entry through Earth's atmosphere. Orion will make a water landing and be recovered using operations planned for future human exploration missions. The test mission will be launched from Cape Canaveral to acquire critical re-entry flight performance data and demonstrate early integration capabilities that benefit the Orion, SLS."The entry part of the test will produce data needed to develop a spacecraft capable of surviving speeds greater than 20,000 mph and safely return astronauts from beyond Earth orbit," Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations William Gerstenmaier said. "This test is very important to the detailed design process in terms of the data we expect to receive."

BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority said Wednesday that most parts of China will continue to be in the grip of cold with temperatures remaining low over the next few days.Snowy weather is forecast to continue in the country's southern regions, and freezing rain is expected to hit parts of Guizhou and Hunan provinces, the National Meteorological Center said in a statement on its website.Parts of the country's northwest areas expected to see light snow or drizzle.Meanwhile, fog will shroud most parts of the country's southern areas Wednesday morning, reducing visibility in parts of Yunnan, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang provinces to less than 1,000 meters, while smog is forecast to hit some areas of Jiangsu Province, according to the statement.
