SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A South Bay homeowner contacted Team 10, saying his homeowner’s association towed his car even though he has parked in the same spot for years.Cecilio Nazareno has lived in the Rolling Hills Ranch community since 2005. “It’s a nice neighborhood,” Nazareno said.He has never had any problems with his HOA until recently. Navarro went on vacation with his wife late last year for a couple weeks.He parked his car in front of his home, but when he returned it was gone. “We were shocked because my car… was missing,” Nazareno said.He thought it was stolen, but when he contacted property management, someone told him it was towed. “The person that I talked to knew it was my car. [He] said we towed your car because it was abandoned,” Nazareno said.The bill was more than 0. “It’s a lot of money for me, especially being retired,” the military veteran said.Navarro said there were two warnings on his windshield, but he obviously did not see it since he was out of the country. “Give us time to correct it. While you're on vacation and your car is parked, you don't have time,” Nazareno said.Team 10 contacted the property management company and got a response from Rolling Hills Ranch Community Association. General Manager Haley Murphy cited a rule that said certain vehicles cannot “remain parked on any street adjacent to the Property for more than twenty-four (24) continuous hours.”However, Team 10 found the rule was for oversized vehicles, not regular sized cars.Murphy then pointed out a different rule: “Any vehicles which would be considered abandoned over 72 hours are subject to regulations… and vehicles that can’t be driven must be kept in the garage or removed.” “I said, how can you say abandoned? I used that car and parked here since 2005,” Nazareno said.“When I was in the military I would leave it here for weeks on out.” Team 10 asked why Navarro was being towed now.Murphy would not answer that specific question, but cited yet another rule that said: “Any vehicle parked for more than 72 hours in the same space is subject to tow with no further notice.” Murphy said that because he lives in “the gated section of the community with private streets,” there are additional restrictions on parking. Nazareno said he, along with several of his neighbors, have never seen this rule.Attorney Dan Zimberoff is not affiliated with the case, but sees a lot of issues similar to Nazareno’s situation. “It’s really the three P’s you see a lot. Pets, poop, and parking,” Zimberoff said.He said it is in the interest of both sides to resolve issues before it goes to court. One way is mediation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Young Marine from San Diego won a scholarship to escort WWII veterans to Iwo Jima and Guam in Spring of 2021."I was just blown away because I'm not only so excited to go to Iwo Jima and Guam and experience the culture and immerse myself but also being able to escort a veteran. That is just something that is a once in a lifetime opportunity," Sophia Righthouse, 17, said.The trip is part of the Young Marines' annual "Reunion of Honor." The week-long trip brings WWII veterans back to the islands they fought on so many years ago and educates Young Marines on history, culture, and leadership.The trip happens each March, and in 2021 the pandemic is putting it at risk. Righthouse isn't worried. "I know the government is working with Japan right now to make sure we can go over," she says.Righthouse won the Jimmy Trimble Scholarship from the American Veterans Center. The scholarship is named after a young athlete who gave up the opportunity to play professional baseball to join the Marines.Trimble died in battle on Iwo Jima on March 1, 1945, at 19-years-old.Righthouse exemplifies Trimble's "finest qualities" needed to earn the scholarship. You may recognize her name from her heroism in 2018 when she evacuated people in an apartment complex that was on fire.She earned an award from the San Diego Fire Department, and a day named in her honor by San Diego City Council.She's won the National Honor Society Volunteer Service Award for completing more than 1,300 hours of community service.Righthouse excelled in cheerleading, dance, and in the Young Marines. Her uniform is adorned with dozens of badges, and medals."Honestly I think it's my family and my friends that push me to strive every single day to be the best person I can possibly be," she said.She found her calling as a Young Marine when she was 8-years-old at a parade."As an 8-year-old you don't see anything like that in the world, other than in the actual military. So I saw them marching, they were all uniformed and disciplined and I said I want to do something like that," she said with a smile.She joined the Young Marines that year and has been in the program for nine years."It's a really great program to strengthen your leader inside of you and bring out the natural born leader that we all have," she said.This trip will be one of her last before she graduates high school.She applied to several military academies and colleges and hopes to make a positive impact on the world as an Operations Officer.When asked what she wants San Diegans to know about her journey, she said "one of the biggest things I've learned, even though I'm 17, is just trust the process and believe in yourself." 2701

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego native made history at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, becoming the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish what many consider the world's most grueling endurance race. Roderick Sewell crossed the finish line of the 140-mile triathlon race in 16 hours and 26 minutes and immediately embraced his mother. The two lived in San Diego homeless shelters when Sewell was growing up."It's amazing to see how far we've come in 20 years," said the 27-year-old.It's even more amazing when you consider that Sewell had never completed a marathon before Saturday's competition. The Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 114-mile bike ride, and ends with a 26.2-mile marathon.On top of that, Sewell had only six months to train after receiving an invitation from the Ironman organization."I had no bike. I didn't own one" until a few months before the competition, said Sewell. Sewell raced with strategy help from his longtime friend and mentor Rudy Garcia-Tolson. Garcia-Tolson became the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish any Ironman 10 years ago."Back when I first met Roderick, he was about 8 years old. He was actually petrified of the water," Garcia-Tolson said. "Whatever life is throwing at you, mental or physical challenges, you have to fight and get over those and strive for better."Sewell, whose legs were amputated at 2 years old because he was born without tibias, credits much of his success to the San Diego-based Challenged Athletes Foundation. He was introduced to the group at 8 years old."I didn't do any kind of sports. I wasn't very physically active," he said. "And then I started with them and got started in every sport I could."CAF gave Sewell his first running blades at a time when he and his mother were living in homeless shelters."If I can inspire someone, it's a blessing," he said. "When people come up to me and tell me their stories, to me their stories seem more mind-blowing than my own," Sewell added. 2009

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A U.S. Navy sailor from the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier was injured on his ship Friday.The sailor was struck by a towed aircraft on the flight deck around 6:30 p.m.A Navy news release reported the sailor was flown to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla for treatment. The sailor's injuries are not life-threatening.The USS Carl Vinson is conducting a training exercise off the coast of Southern California. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman who was shot at the Route 91 music festival in Las Vegas is making great strides in her recovery.Tina Frost and her boyfriend were with eight friends when Stephen Paddock opened fire. Frost was the only one of her group who was shot. The bullet went into her eye.Her family says the recovery has been difficult but that she continues to power forward with her therapies.Frost’s mother posted an update on the GoFundMe page indicating Frost has walked without assistance, thrown a ball, baked cookies, and painted an eye patch for herself.Amy Klinger, a close family friend, says Frost's strength and resilience is no surprise."She is not going to let anything get in her way of getting back to her normal, happy, and healthy life," said Klinger.  "It was so amazing, I walked into the room and she was talking with her physical therapist and because her sentences were so clear, I did forget for a minute she had not been speaking."A lifelong soccer player, Frost has even been able to kick a soccer ball to her dad in the hallway."The fact that they did say at the very beginning, let's see what happens in a year, and it's only less than five weeks out and she's walking and she's talking, she's just, the progress has been amazing and is a testament to who she is," said Klinger.Klinger believes the worldwide support and power of positivity has been a factor in the healing, for both Frost and her family."Just knowing there's this enormous community, Team Tina, that's out there behind the family, it keeps their spirits up and keeps them positive because this is a lot to do deal with," said Klinger.Frost has a big surgery in the upcoming weeks where doctors will begin facial reconstruction. 1749
