As the nation continues to face a shortage of nurses, parents in Chicago say they’re feeling the effects particularly hard when it comes to their children’s public schools.Mason Rodriguez is a smart, gregarious 6-year-old boy, who enjoys going to school. When he comes home each day, his mother, Laurel Henson, asks if he had daydreams. That’s because Mason has epilepsy, and the word daydreams is used to describe his seizures.Henson says her son’s seizures are getting worse.“He has them every couple days,” Henson says.Mason’s school has no dedicated nurse, and the medication he’s been given in the event of a serious seizure is not something a teacher can administer. “The issue is they have no one on staff at the school, obviously because there’s no nurse to administer the medicine, because it has to be done rectally and they have to be certified,” Henson explains. As a result, Henson says the school told her that in an emergency, they would call 911. But she worries officials wouldn’t get there fast enough.“For the district rep to say, ‘Were not a Band Aid service,’ it’s like, this is not a Band Aid issue. This is my kid’s life, and there’s other kids, ya know?” Henson says.According to the American Nurses Association, the nationwide nursing shortage is so bad that by 2022 there will be more registered nurse jobs available than any other profession. The shortage has hit Chicago Public Schools particularly hard. A million plan--put forward and passed by the Board of Education just this week--aims to add more nurses to the district’s schools, including Mason’s. But not all parents see this as the solution, because the nurses would be temporary.“People from temp agencies have come in untrained, unreliable,” says Wendy Katten.Katten is with Raise Your Hand for Illinois Public Education, an education advocacy group made up of parents. She says there are only 100 certified nurses, and Chicago has over 500 schools. Some parents have now left jobs to be at school with special needs kids.“There are three federal laws that you know are in place to protect children, and those laws aren’t being followed,” Katten says. “The fact that parents are sitting in schools missing work, not getting a pay check because the district is violating, you know, laws, is outrageous.”Chicago Public Schools declined our requests for an interview, but sent us a statement saying, in part, they’re also hiring “20 board employed nurses…” and that they’re working to “ensure every student receives the support and services they need…”“Ensuring greater consistency in nursing services is a top priority for the district, and we are working to strengthen staffing by hiring an additional 20 board-employed nurses and expanding the pool of available vendor support. We will continue working with schools and families to gather feedback and ensure every student receives the supports and services they need to access a high quality education,” read part of the statement.Henson thinks temporary nurses could definitely help her son, but she says it isn’t a long-term fix. 3122

As the debate over voting by mail continues, President Donald Trump told a North Carolina news outlet that voters should test election safeguards by voting both in person and via mail, something which could cause voters legal issues.Trump has expressed doubt in mail-in voting during the 2020 election cycle, claiming that mail-in voting is prone to fraud. But many states, some of which are led by Republicans, are ramping up mail-in voting efforts. Proponents of mail-in voting say that it is a safer alternative than in-person voting given the coronavirus pandemic. The president, speaking to a reporter from WECT, said he wanted voters to test the state’s safeguards.“So let them send it in and let them go vote, and if their system’s as good as they say it is, then obviously they won’t be able to vote,” Trump told WECT. “If it isn’t tabulated, they’ll be able to vote. So that’s the way it is. And that’s what they should do.”In North Carolina, it is a Class I felony to vote twice. The National Conference of State Legislatures has a list of laws pertaining to “double voting” on its website. Voting twice in an election is illegal across the US.Meanwhile on Wednesday, US Attorney General William Barr said that voting by mail is “playing with fire.”“We're a very closely divided country here,” Barr told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “And if people have to have confidence in the results of the election and the legitimacy of the government and people trying to change the rules to this, to this methodology, which as a matter of logic is very open to fraud and coercion, is reckless and dangerous. And the people are playing with fire."While there is scant evidence of widespread voting fraud in past elections, there are questions on the US Postal Service’s ability to return ballots in time to be tabulated. In Florida, Volusia County Elections said more than 1,000 ballots that should have been counted for last month’s primary did not arrive on time. There were 1,281 ballots postmarked the day before Election Day, but election officials received them too late to be counted. The USPS has experienced some service disruptions as some sorting machines have been removed from some post offices. While this had an impact on last month’s primary, the USPS slowdown has also caused slowdowns for essential items such as medicines and paychecks. 2350

As Thousand Oaks comes to grips with the dual traumas of a deadly mass shooting and destructive wildfires, Brian Hynes will have to decide whether to reopen the Southern California bar where 12 people were killed. The Borderline Bar & Grill, the kind of place that comforted and supported the community in times of distress, is closed after a Marine veteran opened fire there last week in what authorities called a "horrific scene" before he apparently took his own life. Will the bar reopen? Hynes, the establishment's owner, said he knows how he'll come to a decision."With what Borderline is to ... my community, I don't know if (reopening) is going to feel right. But once I stand inside that building, it's going to be like going to my childhood home, and I'll know. I'll know then," he told CNN's Brooke Baldwin on Monday afternoon."There's no way I'm not going to reopen out of fear or anything like that. If it works, we will definitely reopen, but right now ... with the fires going on in our same community ... I'm trying to get people back in their home beds, with their pets and their families." 1117

At this point, it might be inevitable. Some of you will have your identities stolen.Nearly half of Americans had their personal information exposed during a breach at Equifax, the company announced last week. And it's just the latest hack. Sensitive data on about 80 million Anthem customers was accessed in 2015.These breaches are some of the worst because the information stolen (names, Social Security numbers, addresses) can be used by an imposter to open accounts in your name, steal your tax refund or your Social Security check."This is a goldmine of information for a thief," said Chi Chi Wu, an attorney at the National Consumer Law Center. When your credit card number is stolen, it's easier to fix. You call the credit card company to close the card and get a new number. In most cases, you won't be responsible for the charges. Some of the victims of the Equifax hack did have their credit card numbers exposed. Equifax will notify you in the mail if this is the case. But the credit rating bureau won't notify you directly if you're one of the 143 million people whose more sensitive information was stolen. You must go online to EquifaxSecurity2017.com to find out.First of all, don't panic. If your information was compromised, it does not mean your identity was stolen. There are some steps you can take right now, like placing a freeze on your credit reports, to help prevent it from happening. And even if everything seems fine now, you should also continue to keep a close eye on your accounts and credit reports because your identity might not be stolen right away.If you do find out that someone has created a new account in your name, you'll have to prove that you didn't open the account and you might have to clear bad debt information from your credit report. It could be a long, messy process. Here's where to start:1. Go to IdentityTheft.gov to file an identity theft reportThis is important because it will provide you with a document you'll need to send to other businesses where fraudulent accounts were opened -- not because the government will start investigating your personal case. The form asks you questions about who you are and what accounts were impacted. It doesn't ask for any other documents or even your Social Security number, said John Krebs, an attorney at the Federal Trade Commission. The website will also provide you with a recovery plan after you submit the information. The plan will vary depending on what kind of accounts were created or hacked.2. Put a freeze or fraud alert on your credit reportsYou can request the three credit rating agencies to freeze your credit. This will prevent anyone from opening additional new accounts in your name. You'll have to request to lift the freeze if you want to open a new line of credit yourself. There are usually fees to freeze and unfreeze that vary by state, but generally range between and .If this is too much of a hassle, you can put a free fraud alert on your credit reports instead. This will require creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity before issuing credit. The fraud alert usually lasts for 90 days and can be renewed. But after you fill out the identity theft report online, you can request an extended fraud alert that stays on your credit report for seven years.3. Request, in writing, to close fraudulent accountsContact the fraud department (not customer service) at each business where a new account was opened in your name to explain that someone stole your identity and request that the account be closed. The FTC provides a sample letter you can use to dispute these accounts. Include a copy of your identity theft report. In some cases, the creditor may also ask for a police report, which you must file with local law enforcement first."The creditor will have a higher tendency to believe you if you have the police report," Wu said.Ask the business to send you a letter confirming that the fraudulent account isn't yours, that you aren't liable for it, and that it was removed from your credit report.Under most state laws, you're not responsible for any debt incurred on fraudulent new accounts opened in your name without your permission, according to the FTC.4. Dispute any fraudulent information on your credit reportIf a thief uses your identity to create a new credit card account, for example, it will end up on your credit report. But you have no control over that account. If the imposter doesn't pay the bills, it can seriously hurt your credit score. You'll need to write to each of the three credit rating agencies to request that they remove the incorrect information. The FTC provides a sample letter you can use to explain the situation. You should hear from the agencies in about 30 days on how they are handling the dispute, Wu said.5. Prevent future fraudOnce you've cleared up the situation, remain vigilant. Just because you've reported an incident of identity theft, it doesn't mean it won't happen again.Keep a close eye on all your statements. Consider enrolling in a credit monitoring and theft protection service. If you've already frozen your credit reports, you'll have to temporarily lift the freeze in order to enroll in a monitoring service, according to the FTC.You should also try to file your taxes as early as possible next year -- before someone else tries to use your Social Security number to steal you return, suggests the Massachusetts Attorney General. In addition to your Social Security number, Equifax says that your driver's license number may also have been exposed. In some states, you can ask the Department of Motor Vehicles to place a flag on your license number. This will alert law enforcement to be extra careful identifying a person they pull over, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center. 5795
