UNITED NATIONS, March 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday called upon the international community to render more support and provide more assistance to Afghanistan, and voiced its support for a leading coordination role by the United Nations in the reconstruction of the south Asian country.The appeal came as Li Baodong, the permanent Chinese representative to the United Nations, was speaking to a UN Security Council meeting on the current situation of Afghanistan.The international community must keep focused on Afghanistan, which is currently at a key transitional period, and increase support and assistance to enhance Afghan sovereignty and capacity for development, Li said.The international community should also step up the efforts to assist the country in strengthening its military and police forces, promoting the process of national reconciliation in the nation, he said.He said that China supports the leading coordination role played by the United Nations in helping Afghanistan in its reconstruction process.China had actively supported and participated in Afghanistan's peaceful reconstruction, he said, adding that China will continue to provide assistance to Afghanistan within its capacity.China had invited Afghan President Hamid Karzai to visit China on March 21-25, Li said, adding that he is confident that visit will achieve positive results.

BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Both output and sales values of China's machinery industry exceeded 10 trillion yuan (1.46 trillion U.S. dollars) last year, the China Machinery Industry Federation (CMIF) said here Wednesday.Output value reached 10.75 trillion yuan in 2009, up 16.07 percent from the year earlier. Sales value was 10.48 trillion yuan, up 16.11 percent,said Wang Ruixiang, the CMIF director.From January to November last year, the sector's profits reached 581.6 billion yuan, up 22.8 percent year on year.The auto sector was the "engine" that drove the overall growth of the industry last year, said Wang, adding nearly 30 percent of output value of the machinery industry was generated by automakers.Wang predicted the machinery sector would reach a 15 percent growth in output and sales values this year, with profits likely to grow 10 percent.

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of all eight Chinese police officers buried under a collapsed building in the Haiti quake had been found as of early Sunday morning Beijing time, the Ministry of Public Security said.     The first body was found at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 16 Beijing time after more than 80 hours of search and rescue work, and the other seven were retrieved from 10:42 p.m. to 3:56 a.m. Jan. 17 under the joint efforts of the Chinese rescue team, the Chinese peacekeeping force in Haiti and several foreign rescue teams, the ministry's emergency response work team announced Sunday. BEIJING, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- China promulgated a regulation Monday requiring meteorological authorities to conduct research on meteorological disasters, in an effort to reduce the damage from natural disasters like sand storms, blizzards, droughts, typhoons and icy weather.The Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council, the Cabinet, said Tuesday in a statement the regulation is designed to better protect people's lives and properties.The regulation, which takes effect April 1, requires meteorological authorities above the county level to conduct research on the frequency, intensity, and impact of meteorological disasters, and to set up a database to better evaluate risks.Schools are asked to teach students how to protect themselves and rescue others during natural disasters under the guidance of educational or meteorological authorities.The regulation also specifies the media's role in the event of meteorological disasters.Media organizations are responsible for the release of disaster warnings and alerts given by the local meteorological centers, the regulation says.Media organizations that fail in their responsibilities, release false information, or release alerts without authorization face fines of up to 50,000 yuan (about 7,322 U.S. dollars), according to the regulation.Media groups must cover the occurrence and development of disasters and emergency situations "timely and correctly", it reads.China is one of the countries most susceptible to natural disasters and 70 percent of disasters occurring in China are meteorological ones, according to the statement.
