HONG KONG — China has officially ratified a plan to write a national security law for Hong Kong, exerting Beijing's broader, new control over the semi-autonomous territory in a bid to prevent a return of the months of often-violent protests last year. China’s ceremonial legislature approved a decision by the ruling Communist Party to impose national security laws on Hong Kong. The Beijing-backed Hong Kong government sought to assure its citizens that the law would not infringe on their freedoms. The pro-democracy opposition described the move as the end of the core values that set the former British colony apart from the rest of China. 655
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Fort Lauderdale officials say 211.6 million gallons of sewage has spilled into Fort Lauderdale waterways in the past few months. The Sun-Sentinel reports that’s enough to fill 320 Olympic-sized pools. The city’s aging sewer pipes broke six times in December and spewed 126.9 million gallons of sewage — ranking as one of South Florida’s biggest spills ever. The spills fouled the Tarpon River, the Himmarshee Canal and streets in three neighborhoods. Officials also told the state Department of Environmental Protection that 79.3 million gallons spilled into nearby George English Lake over a 10-day period that began on Jan. 30 and ended on Feb. 8. 690
Health officials in China have published the first details on nearly 45,000 cases of the novel coronavirus disease that originated there, saying that more than 80% have been mild and that new ones seem to be falling since early this month. The World Health Organization says Monday's report from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention gives a clearer picture of the outbreak and where it’s headed but it's too soon to tell whether it has peaked. China may postpone its annual congress in March, its biggest political meeting of the year. Quarantine efforts continue in other countries where the virus spread. 636
Harvey Weinstein has lost a longshot bid to move his sexual assault trial out of New York City.A state appellate panel rejected the request Thursday. It dismissed the movie mogul's concerns that he wouldn't get a fair trial in the world's media capital. The five-judge panel issued the decision after reading submissions from Weinstein's lawyers and prosecutors. The panel didn't give a reason for the decision.Weinstein is due to stand trial in Manhattan in January on charges he raped a woman in 2013 and performed a forcible sex act on a different woman in 2006.The 67-year-old producer has pleaded not guilty and is free on million bail. He maintains any sexual activity was consensual.Weinstein's lawyers didn't immediately comment on Thursday's ruling. Prosecutors declined comment. 802
Former Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli is expected to take a top job at the Department of Homeland Security to help steer the administration's immigration policies, a senior administration official said.Cuccinelli is not expected to take on the role of "immigration czar," a position President Donald Trump had considered establishing to improve coordination between the agencies involved in handling the steep uptick in migrants crossing the US's southern border in recent months. But Trump and White House officials hope Cuccinelli, a politically savvy immigration hardliner, will ensure the White House's immigration priorities are being carried out at the Department of Homeland Security. There are few Senate-confirmed appointees in the top roles at the DHS, which some White House officials argue has slowed them down in advancing their policies.Since he became acting secretary, Kevin McAleenan brought in several officials from Customs and Border Protection whom the White House did not view as immigration hardliners. Cuccinelli's appointment will help even that out, officials say.One official even left open the option that Cuccinellli could be named DHS secretary. McAleenan, currently acting secretary, has never been seen as a permanent option, sources say.Cuccinelli's exact role and title is still being hashed out. 1351
