The mother of a Maryland teen accused of murdering a Baltimore County Police Officer blamed the justice system in court, saying if her son had been detained the incident would not have happened.“Numerous times I asked them to detain him so nothing like this would happen,” Tanika Wilson, the mother of 16-year-old Dawanta Harris said, fighting through tears. “…my condolences to the family of the officer. My condolences from the bottom of my heart. If they would have kept him we wouldn’t be here.”Harris has been charged of first-degree murder in the death of Officer Amy Caprio. He allegedly ran her over with a stolen car after Capiro confronted him in a  Perry Hall, Maryland, cul de sac.“He knows right from wrong,” Wilson said through tears. “Everything changed, his life, my life, the officer’s life, in a split second.”Wilson, explained the court proceedings her son had been involved in criminal activity since he was first arrested in December 2017. Wilson said she struggled to keep Harris on the straight and narrow as she recently had a baby and Harris transitioned from middle school to high school. She said Harris began hanging out with people that were bad influences.She also said she would travel the neighborhood looking for her son, occasionally getting into confrontations with other families in the process.At the time of Caprio’s death, Harris had violated a home detention order following a hearing?from early May. At that court proceeding on May 10, Wilson says she and the assistant state’s attorney wanted Harris detained. His public defender requested his release on good behavior and a judge concurred, issuing an non-GPS ankle monitor to be placed on Harris for home detention. By Monday, May 14, Harris was declared AWOL and the Department of Juvenile Services made several attempts over the next two days to find him. Harris could not be found or contacted, and by another court appearance on Friday, May 18, Wilson hoped a writ would be issued to find and detain her son.According to court records, because Harris was not at the delinquency hearing, it was tabled until Tuesday, May 22. Caprio was killed on Monday, May 21.“This was a woman who was crying out for help. She turned to every resource available including the court system, because with a mother’s wit and intuition, she had that feeling that sinks in your gut,” J. Wyndal Gordon, one of Harris' attorneys, said. “ … she did everything that she could to avoid what brings us here today ... this is not an excuse for the conduct of her son, but it’s an explanation of how everyone has been affected by what has taken place in this case, and again, not to forget about the victim, because the victim had family to.” Harris' lawyers also called on the state to release body cam footage from the incident.“With regard to suspending judgment, waiting for the evidence, we’re calling for the State’s Attorney, the Police Department, to release the body cam footage” said Warren Brown, one of the lawyer’s representing the driver, Harris. “It should speak for itself, and we see no good reason that the public, especially considering the emotional aspect of this case, should be kept in the dark.”At a press conference earlier this week, Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger said he would not release any body camera footage in an effort to avoid tainting future jury pools.“We think the body cam footage is the sine qua non of this case. There’s been a lot of strong feelings about this case, but strong feelings do not equal strong facts. We want to ask the tough questions about this case, because it generates a lot of questions that we don’t have answers to,” Gordon said. The two attorneys depicted a scenario in which Caprio blocked Harris in, deployed her weapon, and put him in fear for his life, so that he felt the need to escape, driving blindly forward through his only potential route of escape - where Caprio was standing. “What evidence is it that he intended to hit and kill this police officer? The state has even conceded that when the gun was drawn at some point, either before or after the first shot is fired, he’s ducking down, he’s looking at the seat of the vehicle. He’s instinctively trying to get away,” Brown said. “ … He was in survival mode.”“People are going to hear what they want to hear, but it should be said and heard that his head was buried as he drove off,” Brown said. “There wasn’t any intention on his part to strike this officer. The organization that manages presidential debates says there will be changes made “to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues” at future debates this season.The Commission on Presidential Debates released a statement Wednesday following the first presidential debate held in Cleveland.The debate has been called “chaotic” and hard to follow. Trump’s frequent interruptions of the Democratic presidential nominee defined Tuesday night’s debate, with Biden frequently unable to complete a sentence.The commission makes it clear the debates are “for the benefit of the American electorate,” and they “will be carefully considering the changes that it will adopt and will announce those measures shortly.”Moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News pleaded with Trump several times to allow Biden to speak uninterrupted, to no avail.In their statement, the commission thanked Wallace, saying they are “grateful to Chris Wallace for the professionalism and skill he brought to last night’s debate.” 1001

The owner of a company that builds 3D-printed guns said he has begun selling blueprints of the weapons to elude a court order on Monday that banned him from giving the plans away for free.Cody Wilson, the founder of Defense Distributed, said that he interpreted Monday's federal court order to mean that he could not put gun blueprints online to be downloaded for free. Instead, he said, he is now selling the blueprints to customers, letting them name their own price and then emailing or shipping it to them."Anyone who wants these files is going to get them. The latest release of documents related to the mass shooting on Oct. 1 contain a mixture of reports by police officers and witness statements.One of the reports contained in the release on Wednesday appears to be an interview with country singer Jason Aldean, who was performing when Stephen Paddock opened fire on music lovers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.According to the statement, the person making the statement instructed officers to take himself, his bodyguard and pregnant wife to the airport. He then told the officer that he was on stage playing when he heard the first few pops. He said he was confused like everyone was and looked around, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary.  The next large barrage of fire he said was so loud to him that it sounded as if someone was right next to the stage firing shots. The person making the statement then said he could see people in the audience dropping to the ground in "waves."  Someone backstage yelled out that it was gunfire and for him to get down. That's when he ran off the stage and went to protect his pregnant wife who was inside the tour bus that protected the perimeter until he was evacuated.The documents included what appears to be a written statement from Aldean."I was onstage singing and thought I heard fireworks. I turned to look at my monitor guy and saw my personal security guard running toward me and telling me to evacuate the stage. At that point, we layed (sic) on the stage and hid until we could get on my bus. We then stayed in the back of the bus for a few hours until police escorted us away." Another report appeared to be an interview with Dee Jay Silver, who had performed at the festival around 9 p.m. ahead of Aldean. After the shooting began, he was hiding in a tour bus. Silver then received a text asking what floor his 1-year-old son was on.The baby was sleeping down the hall on the 32nd floor -- the floor where shooter Stephen Paddock was located. That's when Silver found out the floor had been evacuated. Silver was taken to multiple places before he ended up at the Thomas & Mack. He eventually received a text that his son was at Town Square. After he was reunited with him Silver told police, "I just held him and held him and held him." Police also asked Silver if he had noticed any suspicious, staying on the same floor as the shooter. Silver did not recall seeing Paddock or speaking to him. But he also didn't see housekeeping during that time. Silver was moved to Delano after the shooting. A bike officer with Mandalay Bay described how he was headed towards the festival grounds when he heard that a Mandalay Bay officer was hit and decided to turn around.He commandeered an elevator, picked up an engineer, and headed to the 32nd floor.When he got there, he heard automatic gunfire coming from the end of the hall. According to the bike officer, that is when Jesus Campos came running towards him when the shooting paused. The bike officer says he inspected the wound and decided it didn't look very severe.Everything was kind of a blur after that but the bike officer said he helped police officers clear the rooms.One police officer who was at the scene describes how he and other police officers took cover behind a police car during the shooting. The officer says that multiple rounds hit the car and the rear window was shot out. One of the officers began yelling that he was hit and said he could not move his arm. Another officer grabbed the wounded officer and they left to seek medical attention.According to statement by several police officers, there was a lot of commotion and confusion the night of the shooting at several properties located near Mandalay Bay.Calls were received from Circus Circus, Tropicana, Bellagio, New York-New York and the Bellagio hotel-casino.In each case, police officers were unable to find another shooter. However, they did discover that the possible shooter at the Bellagio was actually the vice president of security. It appears that the VP decided to put on a tactical vest and arm himself and protect Bellagio if necessary.Many reports from officers describe how they were off duty at the time of the shooting but "self dispatched" when they began to hear what was happening. Several officers headed towards the Route 91 festival grounds while others headed to hospitals where victims were being assisted or even took it upon themselves to assist with traffic control. 4520

The moderator from Tuesday’s presidential debate says there was an “honor system” for both campaigns when it came to completing COVID-19 tests for their staff ahead of the event.Fox News host Chris Wallace was speaking with his colleague Bill Hemmer Friday afternoon. They were discussing reports from earlier in the day that Trump’s family did not wear masks while seated during the debate in Cleveland.Wallace confirmed the report and said the Trump family were offered masks by the Cleveland Clinic staff and “rejected them.”He also said when President Donald Trump came into the hall Tuesday afternoon to look at the stage set-up, “members of the commission (on presidential debates) were not especially happy with the fact that the presidential party was not wearing a mask” during the walk-through.The statement released from the Cleveland Clinic Friday morning in regard to these developments stated, “Most importantly, everyone permitted inside the debate hall tested negative for COVID-19 prior to entry. Individuals traveling with both candidates, including the candidates themselves, had been tested and tested negative by their respective campaigns.”Wallace confirmed this, and said there would not have been enough time to have people from the campaigns tested on-site in Cleveland and receive results back before the debate needed to start.“They didn’t arrive until Tuesday afternoon, so for them to get tested, there wouldn’t have been enough time to have the test and have the debate later that night at 9 o’clock,” Wallace told Hemmer. “So yeah, there was an honor system when it came to the people who came into the hall from the two campaigns.”Wallace said people who were on the ground for multiple days in Cleveland, like himself and Hemmer who covered the debate for Fox News, were tested by the Cleveland Clinic.
