SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A driver crashed his Mercedes-Benz through an underground parking garage gate, causing the gate to fall onto his car and leaving the vehicle -- and himself -- trapped at the entrance.The incident was reported at around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment complex in the 4300 block of Menlo Avenue, according to San Diego police.With the large gate on top of the car, responding officers helped the driver out of his vehicle.ABC 10News learned the man was treated by medics at the scene but was also being evaluated for possible DUI. He did not appear to be seriously hurt.It's unclear why the driver was attempting to enter the parking garage since he reportedly told police he does not live in the apartment complex. 743

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A big rig blew a tire and veered across all lanes of southbound Interstate 15 at Carmel Mountain Road Thursday afternoon, leading to a Sig Alert on the freeway. The flatbed truck lost its front left tire about 2:20 p.m., the California Highway Patrol reported. The driver lost control and hit two cars before crashing into the center divider. One of the cars hit an SUV, and was knocked over the freeway rail into the HOV lanes.The CHP reported debris on the freeway from the crash, including fuel leaking from the truck. One injured person was taken to Palomar Medical Center, City of San Diego officials reported. Another driver had minor injuries.Check 10News traffic conditions The far left lane of I-15 and the right lane of the HOV section reopened at 5:45 p.m., according to the CHP. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A crucial part of the fight to end food insecurity depends on community donations. And the most significant impact often comes from a group of strangers that come together to donate, volunteer, and distribute. “I want to say the excess food we have is maybe 75 pounds to 100 pounds every couple of weeks,” said Adam Sapinoso. Sapinoso works for National Food Group, a wholesale food service distributor in San Diego. From time to time, his inventory exceeds his client's needs leaving him with additional food that he doesn’t need. That food is often tossed out. “It was just hard seeing that much food being thrown away, especially when you’re the one physically throwing it in the dumpster,” said Sapinoso. Looking for a solution, he turned to Feeding San Diego’s app called Meal Connect. This app connects restaurants and companies with Feeding San Diego volunteers. Those volunteers pick up excess food from companies and restaurants when it is most convenient for the company. Donate now to Month of a Million MealsThe volunteer then heads to one of Feeding San Diego’s distribution locations to drop off the donations. The food is then unpacked and sorted out and distributed to the community. One of those sites is Wesley Community Services Center in City Heights.“When we started, this program was upstairs with coffee and donuts. Now, eight years later, we are doing a million pounds a year, 1500 meals a month, and it’s just growing. 1470

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A “rolling altercation” between two drivers in the Bonita area led to the stabbing death of one man and the detention of another. Chula Vista police Capt. Phil Collum told 10News the incident was reported just after 9 a.m. at the intersection of Sweetwater Road and Willow Street, near the Chula Vista Golf Course.Collum said officers that responded to the incident arrived to find an unidentified man lying on the ground with stab wounds. Life-saving measures were administered before he was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital. The man died from his injuries upon arrival, according to Collum.The other man, 60-year-old Rickey Smith, remained at the scene. Officers said they found a folding-blade knife, believed to be the weapon, on Smith's belt. He surrendered without incident, police said.Collum said witnesses reported the drivers of a white Ford Ranger pickup and silver Nissan Quest minivan yelling at each other before colliding. Smith left his truck and stabbed the victim, who was still in his minivan, police said. No other parties were involved, Collum told 10News. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Barrio Logan business is on a mission to help students become the first in their family to go to college. Called the Barrio Logan College Institute, the business helps kids learn how to get into college. The program began in 1996 and helps students from third grade all the way through college. So far, 204 students have participated in the program. The programs offered are free, but parents are required to donate their time. The business began out of the need to help students in underserved communities. According to the institute, only three percent of adults age 25 and older in Barrio Logan have a bachelor’s degree. The institute also says only 38 percent of those 25 and older in the community have a high school diploma. Through the institute, many students have been able to go on to attend college. 88 percent of students who have gone through the Barrio Logan College Institute’s College Success Program remain in college working toward a degree. For now, the institute is focused on moving to a new location within the Barrio Logan Community, so far raising .1 million of the needed .5 million to buy the building.
