(KGTV) -- Former Vice President Joe Biden visited San Diego Friday night to discuss cancer research at the Salk Institute. Biden is pushing for national efforts to improve prevention and treatment of the disease. His son, beau died from brain cancer in 2015. RELATED: Meghan McCain and Joe Biden share emotional moment on 'The View' The Salk Institute is also launching its own initiative to study cancer. One of their goals is to eradicate childhood illnesses and premature birth for the March of Dimes. Join 10News this weekend and next weekend as we March for Babies. The North County March for Babies takes place Sunday, April 22 at Mance Buchanon park in Oceanside. LAS VEGAS, Nev. (KTNV) - A security guard opened fire at a Ross Dress for Less in Las Vegas Saturday, sending customers into hiding for their safety, witnesses said.The shooting happened Saturday around 4 p.m. at the store in the Blue Diamond Crossing strip mall on Blue Diamond Rd.Dramatic video shows Ross customers, including a child, ducking under clothes racks as shots rang out.Watch the video:Witnesses said police arrived and exchanged shots with the gunman, who was hit by police gunfire. He was taken to a hospital for surgery. No one else was hurt.Shoppers at nearby Kohl's and Target stores were evacuated or sheltered in place during the exchange.The security guard was reportedly arguing with the store manager before the shooting. When police arrived, he also fired at them. It is not known at this time why the argument started.No personal information has been released about the security guard. The name of the officer who shot him will be released this week, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department policy.  1057

LAHAINA, Maui (KGTV) - A wildfire put a twist on the Hurricane Lane response in Maui Friday.California resident Victoria Monroe is visiting Lahaina and posted photos to Twitter showing high winds slamming the Maui coastline. She also captured the brush fire moving toward the coast.The fire grew to 300 acres by Friday morning, with reports of structures lost. One woman suffered burns to her hands and legs.10News received an email from San Diego resident Jodi Vachon who owns a home in the fire area."I'm just worried about not only the hurricane but the fire as well. So, it's coming from both ends," said Vachon.Vachon told 10news her home is all right, but she's heard from neighbors in Maui that at least two homes have been lost.She said they're hoping Hurricane Lane will bring some heavy downpours to the burn area.Meanwhile, travelers at San Diego International Airport are prepared for a bumpy ride as they board flights to Honolulu, where the effects of Lane have yet to interfere with flights."I like a little rock and roll," said Dr. George Pratt, a Clinical Psychologist with Scripps Hospital in La Jolla.  He flew to a lead a seminar on the big island of Hawaii on the subject of success.As for a successful flight for nervous fliers, he said, "Meditate. (KGTV) - A Lakeside woman who spent ,000 to have solar panels installed on her home is angry about an 8 electric bill from San Diego Gas and Electric.Michaela Wright told 10News her power bill is three times higher than it was at this time last year.“How could I possibly get a bill this high when I bought solar panels,” questioned Wright.Wright called the high bill “price gouging” and said it was "out of hand" with a 26 percent rate hike coming in the next three years. She’s been writing letters to lawmakers and calling the governor to demand action.To make a difference, Wright also wants her East County neighbors to talk part in a walk-out. She would like to see residents leave their homes and stop using power between 4 and 9 p.m., twice a month.“Hit them in the pocketbooks because money talks and when you start losing money they start paying attention. I just feel we have to do something,” Wright said.SDG&E spokesperson Wes Jones wouldn’t comment on the walk-out or talk specifically about Wright’s bill.
