SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Military officials are preparing to transfer the remains of seven U.S. Marines -- including one from Montebello -- and a Navy sailor to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware over the next few days to be prepared for burial.The remains were recovered Friday after the Marines went missing near San Clemente Island when their amphibious vehicle sank during a training mission last month."Our hearts and thoughts of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit are with the families of our recovered Marines and Sailor," said Col. Christopher Bronzi, commanding officer of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. "We hope the successful recovery of our fallen warriors brings some measure of comfort."Marine and Navy pallbearers will place the remains aboard an aircraft bound for Dover AFB in a solemn transfer, officials said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con pleaded not guilty to a murder charge today for allegedly stabbing another man in an apparently random attack in a public restroom along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, 16 days after being released from prison.Martin Alvarez, 33, is accused in the Aug. 16 slaying of 39-year-old Michael Wagley, who was found mortally wounded at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 in the lavatory at 700 Grand Avenue. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing on a bicycle following the stabbing, San Diego Police Department Lt. Andra Brown said.The lieutenant said Alvarez, who matched the suspect description, was detained in the area and later arrested on suspicion of murder.The alleged motive for the slaying was unclear, but a prosecutor said the victim had no connection to his attacker.Deputy District Attorney George Modlin called the stabbing a ``random act of murder'' in which Alvarez allegedly attacked the victim from behind, stabbing him in the neck. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who was a 17-year-old gang member when he killed a San Diego police officer in 1978 has been granted parole, but District Attorney Summer Stephan said today that she is hopeful Gov. Gavin Newsom will reverse the decision. Jesus Cecena, 59, was convicted of killing Officer Archie Buggs, 30, who was shot four times after he stopped a car driven by Cecena in the Skyline neighborhood.Cecena fired five times at Buggs, then paused, walked toward the fallen officer and fired a final bullet into his head at point-blank range. The officer died in the street, his hand still on his service revolver.Cecena was granted parole Wednesday during a video-conferenced hearing at Valley State Prison in Chowchilla. He was previously granted parole in 2014, 2015 and 2017, but each time the decisions were reversed.Cecena's latest parole hearing -- his 18th -- included a discussion of his criminal record, psychiatric factors, parole plans, and statements by representatives of the victim's family.``We are deeply disappointed that the killer of one of San Diego's finest officers was granted parole,'' Stephan said. ``This crime impacted the entire San Diego community and caused great pain for the family of Officer Archie Buggs.`` This fallen officer was so respected by the law enforcement community that a substation was named after him,'' she said. ``We are hopeful that Governor Newsom will review this parole grant and reverse it once again to keep this killer incarcerated.''In 1979, Cecena was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, but the sentence was reduced to a seven-year-to-life term in 1982 due to him being underage at the time of the shooting. 1708
