SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Underwater robots showcased difficult tasks and the teams in charge of the technology are hoping to take the crown for the 21st International Robosub Competition in Point Loma.A total of 47 teams from 10 different countries came together with one mission, navigate their robots through a tricky underwater course."We have mechanical, electrical, and computer science, and it's all coming together to make one cohesive vehicle,” said David Garcia, one of the team members from Cal State.Students were able to check out each other’s models to learn what sinks and what swims. For those who think the competition is all fun and games, meet Chinoros Nakthewan from Kasetsart University in Bangkok.His team was part of the Thai cave rescue effort. At the time, they determined that his robot wouldn’t be able to reach the survivors, so they resorted to using their other equipment."We made a decision to bring sonar and drone to observe the high level of the cave,” said Nakthewan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the unknown future of in-person education, the Cajon Valley Union School District has continued to welcome kids to campus since March, but not as students. They’re offering child care.“They’re getting topics that they typically wouldn’t always get during the school year. Fun, light topics more like a summer camp but still learning,” said Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Karen Minshew.She said their priority is giving a safe place to stay for children as their parents go to work.Gov. Gavin Newsom and California health officials have laid out a plan stating counties have to be off the state’s monitoring list for 14 days before they can reopen schools. Minshew said even with this announcement, their current setup falls within the guidelines.“Nothing had changed in terms of the model for child care so yes there’s was information for schools and what’s possible for schools but not child care,” she said.Danica Mitchell has a son who will be starting first grade in the fall. She dropped him off at Chase Avenue Elementary School for the summer program and said she’s happy with the steps the school has taken to keep the students safe.“I’m emotional because I’m an essential worker so both my husband and I work and we need to work to support our family so it’s very important that my child have somewhere to go,” said Mitchell.Minshew said they are considering four different models for the fall term but no matter what happens regarding education and policies for having students on campus, they will be there to offer childcare no matter what. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people spotted by police smashing a window at a Pacific Beach Wendy’s restaurant were arrested after leading officers on a chase.The incident unfolded at around 1:15 a.m. at the fast food restaurant on 1621 Grand Ave., according to San Diego police.Officers were in the area when they saw two people smash a window at the eatery. When police tried to make contact with them, they got into a pickup truck and drove away.The truck reached speeds of up to 100 MPH as it led police on a pursuit towards Interstate 8.Police’s ABLE helicopter helped ground units track the truck into the Midway District, and as the vehicle tried to make a left turn on Rosecrans Street, it crashed into the center divider.The truck then entered a nearby strip mall and came to a stop. The two occupants got out, but officers arrived and took them into custody.Police are trying to determine if the window smash was part of a burglary attempt or an act of vandalism. 975

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two thieves prowled an entire neighborhood in Oak Park looking for something very specific on the vehicles.Along Blackton Drive, the sense of safety is shattered for David Cabrera.  Late Wednesday morning, Cabrera and his wife returned home to a neighbor telling them to check their license plate.  He discovered the registration sticker on his truck stolen. He had sliced his sticker into eight different sections as a precaution but it didn't help.Cabrera's surveillance cameras revealed the thieves:  a man and a woman walking together. A tree obscures the camera's view, but a woman can be seen behind Cabrera's truck, while the man stands and looks around.  The woman gets up and the two walk off.Seconds later, a neighbor saw the same woman peeling off a sticker from another car and the neighbor ran out of her kitchen to confront her.  That neighbor told the woman to put it back.  The woman got verbally aggressive but did put the sticker back.Neighbors called 911 but the thieves took off.  After Cabrera posted details on the Nextdoor app, five other neighbors reported also getting hit that morning."It's a feeling of violation. You want to feel safe in your own neighborhood," said Cabrera. 1275

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two weeks after their son was killed, the parents of Alexander Mazin spoke to 10News for the first time about the brutal attack.Penelope and Jeffrey Mazin say their son left for the 24 Hour Fitness gym on Midway Dr. around 9 a.m. on Feb. 25, 2018.“I said 'I love you' and I kissed him on his little fuzzy beard,” remembered his mom, “and he walked out the door. I’m glad I saw him that morning.”He was scheduled to meet with his dad at noon, but by 12:05, his parents were already worried. He was never late.They started calling hospitals and police stations. Little did they know, officers were already searching for him.“Two plainclothes detectives in black cars pulled up and my heart sunk because I knew right then and there something horrible must have happened,” said Jeffrey.The suspect in the case has been identified as Ernesto Castellanos.The Mazins say Castellanos was in a previous relationship with their son’s girlfriend. They say Alexander had been dating the woman for about three months but kept their relationship somewhat private.There were warning signs. Two weeks before the killing, they say Castellanos had attacked the woman while she was working out with Mazin at a 24 Hour Fitness.Castellanos’ whereabouts are unknown.
