Volunteers at a Chicago food bank got a surprise treat for the holidays.Former President Barack Obama paid an unannounced visit Tuesday to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, where he helped bag potatoes for Thanksgiving meals.Wearing a Chicago White Sox hat, Obama arrived with bags of donated food and donned latex gloves to work side by side with volunteers at the nonprofit, which helps provide meals to more than 700 food pantries and shelters across Cook County, Illinois. The former President and longtime Chicago resident came with staffers from the Obama Foundation, which seeks to improve communities across the US through leadership training and other educational efforts."Hey, how's it going?" he asked volunteers as he walked in. "This is a spiffy-looking spot right here.""We believe no one should go hungry, especially this time of year, and that's why we're working to address the root causes of hunger in Chicago and Cook County," the food bank tweeted out Tuesday, along with a video of the surprise visit. In the video, Obama encounters two little girls who are volunteering and tells them, "You guys are doing such a great job helping out. I'm really proud of you."Obama still lives in Washington but was in Chicago to attend the Obama Foundation Summit, a gathering of community leaders and students.A hallmark of Obama's presidency was combating hunger across the globe. In 2009, his administration pledged?.5 billion over three years to a Feed the Future initiative, which works to promote agricultural knowledge and tools in areas with high food insecurity. In 2016, he signed the Global Food Security Act to bolster government efforts toward Feed the Future initiatives. This was not the first time Obama has volunteered during the Thanksgiving holiday. He and his family spent the day before Thanksgiving in 2015 serving dinner to homeless people and veterans at Friendship Place Homeless Center in Washington.Back then, Obama said it wasn't only "of the spirit of giving during this holiday season but our national obligation to make sure all those who serve and sacrifice for our country have a place to call home." 2176

VISTA (CNS) - A man who fired a BB gun at an Oceanside business that had put up a sign supporting the Black Lives Matter movement pleaded guilty today to charges of violating civil rights by damaging property and vandalism.Steve Soto, 23, of Carlsbad, is slated to be sentenced Sept. 28 to one year in county jail stemming from the June 4 shooting that shattered a window at Bliss Tea & Treats.Oceanside police Sgt. John McKean said Soto drove by the business, then fired a BB gun out the window of his vehicle. The business had a sign in the window at the time that read: "Black owned, we stand with you," McKean said. The sergeant said surveillance video helped detectives identify the vehicle used in the crime, leading to Soto's arrest on July 15.He also pleaded guilty to an assault charge related to a May 28 incident involving a male victim and a misdemeanor vandalism count related to an unspecified July 4 incident. He was facing a hate crime allegation stemming from the Bliss Tea & Treats shooting and other misdemeanor charges of discharging a BB gun in a grossly negligent manner stemming from unspecified incidents occurring in June and July, but those counts were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. 1232

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly 1.2 million laid-off Americans applied for state unemployment benefits last week, evidence that the coronavirus keeps forcing companies to slash jobs just as a critical 0 weekly federal jobless payment has expired. The new jobless claims were down by 249,000 from the previous week after rising for two straight weeks. The Labor Department’s report marked the 20th straight week that at least 1 million people have sought jobless aid. Before the pandemic hit hard in March, the number of Americans seeking unemployment checks had never surpassed 700,000 in a week, not even during the Great Recession of 2007-2009. On Friday, the government is expected to report a sizable job gain for July — 1.6 million. Yet so deeply did employers slash payrolls after the pandemic paralyzed the economy in March that even July’s expected gain would mean that barely 40% of the jobs lost to the coronavirus have been recovered. All told, 16.1 million people are collecting traditional unemployment benefits from their state. 1044
