CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former Tijuana police officer was handed a two- year state prison sentence today for his role in a planned break-in of a Chula Vista residence, which he and others believed was a stash house containing around million in drug money.Marco Quijas-Castillo, 28, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery for the attempted January break-in.A fellow Tijuana officer, Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, was also charged in the case and is awaiting trial on a conspiracy charge.According to preliminary hearing testimony, the two officers and four other men believed a shipment of money would be delivered to the three-bedroom residence, which was actually being rented by the FBI. The defendants were informed of the supposed shipment by an undercover FBI agent, according to testimony.According to the criminal complaint, Quijas-Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 34, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 30, who allegedly traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres ``provided counter-surveillance'' at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance near the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and ``entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house,'' the complaint alleges.According to testimony, the men planned to tie up two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home. 1733

(KGTV) - Southwestern College in Chula Vista was briefly put on lockdown Tuesday after a student reported hearing shots fired at the campus library.The student contacted officers about hearing two gunshots on the third floor of the library just before 1 p.m. at the college on 900 Otay Lakes Rd.Chula Vista Police responded to campus and evacuated the building, according to Southwestern officials. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A growing turf war over a fee at the San Diego International Airport is threatening to delay the massive project to revitalize Chula Vista's bayfront about 15 miles south.The Port of San Diego is already clearing land to make way for a new resort and convention center. RIDA Development has already been selected to build both. The issue now is how to pay for the 1,600 space parking garage next door. The Port imposed a .50 cent fee on rental cars at the airport to help finance the million garage, which a spokeswoman says is authorized in The Port Act. RELATED: Chula Vista bayfront project: Soil transportation underway"This fee is a tried-and-true method for financing a parking facility that has worked great in San Diego already. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) – A Chula Vista man says he could have been seriously hurt by a razor blade attached to the handlebar of a shopping cart.Jason Rodriguez says he was with his wife and young daughter, shopping at the Walmart on Eastlake Parkway Wednesday morning.“Normally we put her in the shopping cart, but I’m glad we didn’t this time,” Rodriguez said.Rodriguez discovered the blade when he went to wipe down the cart handle.  It was attached by magnets to the bottom of the handlebar.“I could have been cut. I could have caught a disease of some sort,” Rodriguez said. “There are crazy people out there who do dumb things for who knows what reason.”Rodriguez says he alerted store management to the incident. He added that he doesn’t blame Walmart because whoever hid the blade could have just as easily put it on other store’s carts.However, he hopes that stores and people will be more vigilant going forward.Walmart gave 10News the following statement: 979

(KGTV) — Firefighters worked Friday to extinguish a brush fire that sparked in the Otay Ranch area of Chula Vista.Officials said the fire started sometime around 12 p.m. near Heritage Rd. and Olympic Parkway, according to Chula Vista Fire Department. The fire began not far from the Republic Services Otay Landfill.Firefighters said the forward rate of the fire had been stopped at 10 acres just before 2:30 p.m. No structures were lost and no injuries were reported.Neighbors came out to watch firefighters work and monitor the blaze.Some were concerned, thinking of past fires that charred neighborhoods, while others like Jessica Rojas had faith in the firefighters, "we've been hearing like a lot of firetrucks and so we figured they were doing a good job of putting out the fires."In addition to CVPD crews on the ground, SDG&E's Sky Maverick helicopter was called to help battle the flames from above with water drops.Chula Vista Fire Captain Linda D'Orsi said this is a great reminder of the importance of defensible space, saying it's not too late in the year to do that yard work. She suggests working in the morning while it's cool and less likely to spark a fire.The cause of the fire was not immediately known. 1254
