VISTA (CNS) - Murder and child cruelty charges were filed Friday against a man accused of killing his 7-year-old daughter at the family's Oceanside home.Pedro Araujo, 27, is accused in Wednesday's slaying of Mariah Araujo, whose body was found in the home's bathroom.Police have not commented on her cause of death, but the criminal complaint indicates that a knife was used in her killing. In addition to murder, he's also charged with child cruelty in regards to Mariah, as well her 6-year-old sister, Viviana, who was also in the home at the time.RELATED: 7-year-old found dead in Oceanside home, father arrestedAraujo was slated to appear in a Vista courtroom Friday afternoon, but did not appear because he was being held in "enhanced observation housing," though court staff did not elaborate. He's tentatively due to be arraigned Monday afternoon. The child's grandmother made an emergency call shortly after 11 a.m. to report that she had just gone the family's house in the 3500 block of Las Vegas Drive to pick up Mariah and her sister but had been unable to find the older girl, police spokesman Tom Bussey said. The woman reported that her son -- the girls' father -- had been evasive about the whereabouts of his elder daughter and had blood on him, Bussey said.Officers went to the residence near Emerald Isle Golf Course and searched it, finding the victim's body in a bathroom. Detectives questioned Araujo and took him into custody on suspicion of murdering his daughter, Bussey said.Members of the girl's family gathered at the Vista courthouse Friday and told reporters that Araujo was unstable and should not have been anywhere near his daughters.Karina Avina, Mariah's aunt, said Araujo's mother had custody of the children as numerous CPS cases were open and ongoing against him, though the circumstances of those cases was unclear."We want him to pay the max. That's what we want," Avina said. "We don't want a few years. We don't want him to get out. He needs to pay his whole life. He needs to remember and wake up each morning that his baby's gone and he's not going to see her anymore." 2119

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV and CNS) - A Camp Pendleton Marine accused of driving drunk and causing a wrong-way crash that killed a father of two on a rural Bonsall-area road early on New Year's Day pleaded not guilty Friday. Adam Daniel Barooshian, 25, was allegedly speeding to the east on the westbound side of state Route 76 near Via Monserate shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday when his Lexus IS 300 hit an oncoming motorcycle ridden by 29-year-old Christopher Williams of Oceanside. At the time of the deadly collision, Williams was on his way home from his job as a security guard and emergency medical technician at Pauma Casino, according to the Oceanside Police Officers' Association, which employs the victim's wife as a public-safety dispatcher. Williams died at the scene of the crash. Medics took Barooshian to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of superficial injuries. About six hours after the deadly wreck, the Massachusetts native was booked into county jail in Vista on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and murder. A judge denied Barooshian’s bail Friday, saying he was a danger to the public after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor DUI in 2018. Williams is survived by his wife, Sarah; and sons, Jonathon, 8, and Nathan, 5. A GoFundMe.com donation account has been established for Williams' family. 1322

WASHINGTON — U.S. health officials have started two new studies to test various blood thinners to try to prevent strokes, heart attacks, blood clots and other complications in COVID-19 patients.Doctors increasingly are finding blood clots throughout the bodies of many people who died from COVID-19 along with signs of damage they do to kidneys, lungs, blood vessels, the heart and other organs.National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Director Gary Gibbons says that hospitals have been giving seriously ill patients anti-clotting drugs to try to prevent this, but “quite frankly, we didn’t know how best to treat it” in terms of which drugs or doses to use and at what stage of illness. The National Institutes of Health will coordinate a study in hospitalized patients comparing low and regular doses of the blood thinner heparin. The study will involve more than 100 sites around the world participating in a research effort with various governments, drug companies, universities and others to speed coronavirus therapies.A second study in COVID-19 patients not sick enough to need hospitalization will test various strategies against placebo pills: baby aspirin or low or regular doses of the anti-clotting drug apixaban, sold as Eliquis in the United States. The goal there is preventing blood clots or hospitalization.A third study starting later will test blood thinners for people who have recovered and no longer test positive for the coronavirus. Evidence is building that they may remain at higher risk for blood clots. 1538

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The driver responsible for a hit-and-run crash in Encinitas that left a mother with severe injuries was sentenced Monday to one year in jail.Justin Parker hit Ashley Lane on Encinitas Blvd. in September 2017. She suffered multiple broken bones, strokes, and partial paralysis.Parker turned himself in two weeks after the hit and run, as investigators were closing in on tips from the community. Investigators say Parker had been drinking prior to the incident.Investigators said Parker drove his truck to a repair shop in Riverside county to repair the damage. Lane made a victim impact statement in Vista court Monday, calling Parker 'selfish' and 'cowardly'."The only reason you turned yourself in was because of the tips from the community of Encinitas and the hard work from my father. My girls have been hurt the most in this," Lane said.  900
