DENVER, Co. – The Durans' home is a family treasure. It’s been passed down through three generations. “My grandparents started this house and he finished it,” said Linda Duran of her father, Gerald Duran. “You name it, I did it,” laughed the Korean War Veteran about the hundreds of hours he’s poured into the family home over the years. But COVID-19 made those repairs impossible to pay for after Linda lost her job. “Can't do anything anymore hardly,” said Gerald. “I want to go to bingo. No, I ain't got no money. Got to buy groceries. That's what's hard. That's what gets hard.” “You're not able to do the things you used to be able to do afford, because being on a fixed income and no income is detrimental,” said Linda. So, she reached out for help. “It’s an awful feeling because I’m not no spring chicken, so I just feel like, ‘Gosh at this point in my life, I should be able to help him more than I am,’” said Linda. A nonprofit called Rebuilding Together answered her prayers. The nationwide group connects contractors and volunteers willing to donate work and supplies for critical home repairs in their own communities. “The majority of people we help are older Americans, veterans or people with disabilities, and so they’re supposed to stay at home and shelter at home, and it’s kind of hard to do that if it’s not safe in their house,” said Jodie Liddy, who works with volunteers across Denver, Colorado. 2107

DENVER (AP) — Authorities have arrested a Colorado man they say held two roofing-company salesmen at gunpoint who had been knocking on doors in his neighborhood. Police told KUSA-TV that both salesmen were wearing blue polo shirts with a local roofing company logo when Scott Gudmundsen forced them to the ground Thursday. The 65-year-old Gudmundsen told police he thought they were members of a far-left-leaning group known as Antifa. Police determined the two workers were doing nothing wrong and arrested Gudmundsen. In a letter, Colorado State University university president Joyce McConnell, athletic director Joe Parker, and head football coach Steve Addazio addressed the situation."Our student is a young man of color, while the perpetrator is white," the letter read. DEL MAR (CNS) - Two horses had to be taken by van from the track at Del Mar Racetrack Friday but both are expected to recover.The 5-year-old mare Magnolia's Hope was vanned off after being eased in the stretch of the fourth race, a 6 1/2-furlong claiming race on the dirt track for fillies and mares 3 years old and up which have never won two races."Though it is never good to be given a van ride, this does not appear to be a case of a life-threatening injury," Mac McBride, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's director of media, told City News Service. "We should know more about her condition tomorrow."Magnolia's Hope was fourth at the start of the race, took the lead a quarter-mile into the race and dropped to fourth in the field of seven through a half-mile.Magnolia's Hope has one victory in nine career starts, along with two second-place finishes and one third-place finish. She has earned ,260 in her career.The 4-year-old filly Velvet Queen also was vanned off after finishing third in the eighth race, a mile race on the dirt track for fillies and mares 3 years old and up which have never won ,000 once other than maiden. DENVER — Colorado lawmakers have tabled legislation that would require schools to notify parents of the arrests of teachers and school employees for certain crimes, prompted by a series of reports by Scripps station KMGH in Denver.House Bill 18-1269, which has sponsors from both parties in both chambers of the legislature, faced its first hearing in front of the House Judiciary Committee Thursday. The committee recommended a number of changes to the bill and tabled it without a vote. The bill requires school districts, charter schools, and local education providers to notify parents in writing within two days being informed of the arrest of an employee whose job involves contact with students. The requirement is limited to arrests for offenses that could require the denial, suspension or revocation of a teacher’s license – offenses that include sexual assault, unlawful sexual behavior and felony child abuse, among others.The requirements would also apply to former employees who resigned or were terminated within one year of the charge being filed. The bill also requires schools to send follow-up notification if the employee is acquitted or if the charges are dismissed.The bill's sponsors asked KMGH reporters to share findings exposing previously hidden arrests at Thursday’s hearing. KMGHs Parents in the Dark reports uncovered numerous arrests of teachers and school employees charged with sexual crimes against students that parents were not notified about, in some cases for months.The bill's sponsors said they plan to make changes to its language to address the concerns raised by judiciary committee and hope to bring it back for another hearing in the coming weeks.   1737

DENVER, Colo. -- President Trump recently approved changes to the Paycheck Protection Program to give small business owners more opportunities to qualify for loan forgiveness. Some owners say even with the changes, it’s still a long process to get their PPP loan forgiven.Gail Lindley is the 3rd generation in her family to run the Denver Bookbinding Company. “It’s more than a business, it’s truly our life blood,” Lindley said.The 91-year-old company received a Paycheck Protection Program loan that helped Lindley keep the lights on and employees working on the limited orders coming in.Now, Lindley is worried about the extensive requirements to make sure her loan is forgiven.“The bank told us, ‘You really need to document well,’” said Lindley.The PPP loan forgiveness application is 11 pages long and requires companies to document all spending on payroll, rent and utilities. Changes to the act were signed into law by President Trump on June 5. Companies must still prove they’ve retained workers and kept wages the same to earn full loan forgiveness.Consumer Bankers Association CEO, Richard Hunt, said documenting this is an unnecessary burden for small business owners.“Right now, small businesses across the country are spending about ,000 more more and 15 more hours submitting another application packet,” said Hunt. “We’re saying, just forgive all the loans under 0,000,” he said.Lindley believes automatic forgiveness would help people get back to work more quickly. “There’s only so many hours in a day, and I want to spend it working on my business not filling out forms,” she said.The Small Business Administration is requiring the most documentation for businesses who want full forgiveness.
