CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The forward rate of spread has been stopped after a fire sparked near a canyon in Chula Vista Thursday evening. The fire started around 5 p.m. in a canyon on the 400 block of Agua Vista Drive. It is in a residential area near the San Miguel Mountain Trailhead.Video from the scene showed white smoke billowing from the canyon. CINCINNATI — Cross-country runner Justin Gallegos is making history. He’s the first athlete with cerebral palsy to sign an endorsement contract with Nike. The University of Oregon junior was given the news last weekend after a college race, and he was visibly touched by achieving his dream of becoming a professional runner. Justin’s parents, Brent and Tracy Gallegos, say they’re proud all Justin has worked to achieve, and were stunned to see him in that moment."I’ve never seen him that emotional ever…..ever," Brent Gallegos said.Justin’s condition affects muscle and motor function, but he didn’t let that stop him."He works very hard for it and when he sets his goals, he sets them very high," Tracy Gallegos said.His story of overcoming obstacles is inspiring others. He was a big topic of conversation among some medical professionals attending a three-day conference for the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine hosted by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. "To show the world that we really can be successful and contribute in some way to society and that we’re valuable," said Dr. Raffi Najarian, who has cerebral palsy.He hopes stories like Justin’s will inspire others."It’s great to see because it’s something that we have seen, you know, up to this point," Najarian said.As for Justin, he has a message for everyone: "You don’t have to let your disability or physical impairments stop you." 1440

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The City of Chula Vista is asking for the public’s help identifying those responsible for vandalizing several city parks.On November 10, Rohr Park and Terra Nova Park were damaged by vandals driving vehicles on the park grounds and soccer fields.RELATED: Chula Vista's Discovery Park damaged by vandals driving on turfThe city says this is the second time in a month parks have been vandalized. In October, Discovery Park and Marisol Park were also damaged in the same way.The city says this type of damage makes the fields unusable. CINCINNATI -- A 911 operator who was placed on leave after a teen's death will return to work Wednesday.Police spokeswoman Tiffaney Hardy couldn't say if that operator, Amber Smith, would face any discipline because an investigation is continuing.Smith took the second call Kyle Plush placed to 911 as he suffocated in his van outside Seven Hills School. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Chula Vista is launching a new pedestrian safety initiative after seeing a sharp increase in fatal crashes last year.According to the Chula Vista Police Department, nine pedestrians were killed in 2017 on city streets. That’s up 125% from 2016.In the first three months of 2018 there have already been three fatal pedestrian crashes, a 200% increase from the same period last year. Police say it's the first time in four years they’ve had more than one pedestrian killed within the first quarter of the year.The map below shows those killed in auto-pedestrian crashes between January of 2017 to March of 2018. In an effort to combat the trend and educate the public, the city unveiled a new campaign on Thursday called “Stay Safe Chula Vista.”To kick off the program they have named April as “Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month.” The Chula Vista Police Department along with the Fire Department and Department of Traffic Engineering will be working together on enforcement and education.CVPD will have increased patrols targeting both drivers and pedestrians who violate traffic laws. Along with the ticket, violators may also relieve pamphlets with information on the “Stay Safe Chula Vista” campaign. Of the nine fatal collisions in 2017, CVPD said pedestrians were found to be at fault in seven of them.The announcement came a little over a month after a 90-year-old man was killed while crossing the street.RELATED: 90-year-old dies hit, killed by two cars in Chula Vista Police say the man was crossing East H Street when he wasn’t supposed to when he was struck and killed.Similarly, in January of 2018, a 94-year-old man was hit and killed on the 1500 block of Third Avenue.
