BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that China and Russia should make joint efforts to achieve common development and combat global challenges.While meeting with Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Sergei Mironov in Beijing, Hu urged the two countries to work for the establishment of a more fair and rational international order.Mironov's visit, which ran from Oct. 17 to 19, was another high-level visit on the heels of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's three-day state visit to China last month."China is willing to work with Russia to materialize consensuses and tasks agreed to during high-level visits," said Hu.Mironov on Monday co-chaired with China's top legislator Wu Bangguo the fourth meeting of the cooperation committee between China's National People's Congress and the Russian Federation Council, a regular parliamentary exchange mechanism for the benefit of bilateral ties.Hu said China supports the increasing exchanges between legislative bodies of the two countries, hoping the two sides could help publicize the ideas of generational friendship and reciprocal cooperation, push forward pragmatic cooperation in various fields and cooperation on adjacent regions of both countries.Hu also said the two countries should enhance coordination within multilateral mechanisms in a bid to contribute to improved China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination.Echoing Hu's remarks, Mironov said the sound development of Russia-China ties complies with the mutual interests of both countries, adding that Medvedev's successful visit, during which the two countries signed a package of deals and agreements, would have a positive impact on future bilateral cooperation.The Russian Federation Council will play its due role in facilitating bilateral cooperation in such areas as politics, trade and energy so as to make new contributions to the friendship between the two countries, Mironov said.Premier Wen Jiabao also met with Mironov later on Tuesday, and called on the two governments to fully implement consensuses reached by the two sides, inject new vitality into the two countries' modernization process and maintain world peace and stability."The profound changes of the international situation has not only offered precious opportunities but also brought forward higher request for developing China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination," Wen said. 

BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- An outraged Chinese public has been flooding the Internet with its intense displeasure and protests over Japan's illegal detention of a Chinese trawler and its crew in the past few days.Japan detained Chinese captain Zhan Qixiong and his fellow crew of 14 members on September 7 after the trawler they were abroad collided with two Japanese coast guard patrol vessels near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.The crewmembers and the boat returned to China on September 13, but Japan extended the illegal detention of Zhan by 10 days on Sunday.Since the incident, "Diaoyu Islands" and "Zhan Qixiong" have become the most searched terms in China's Internet community, the world's largest online community with more than four billion Internet users.Also, Internet bulletin boards on several major Chinese news portals have been overwhelmed with tens of thousands of messages saying that the Diaoyu Islands have always been an integral part of China and it's within the rights of Chinese fishermen to fish in the waters around the islands.Above all, these messages call for Japan to immediately and unconditionally release Zhan."The seizure of our trawler and captain causes an enormous damage to the Chinese people. ZHENGZHOU, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- A moderate earthquake that hit central China's Henan Province Sunday afternoon levelled 24 houses and left 12 students injured, local officials said early Monday morning.The quake, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale and with a hypocenter depth of 8 kilometers, truck Zhoukou City at 4:58 p.m., according to the China National Seismological Network.Twenty four houses in Taikang County collapsed while 12 students in a middle school were injured, who are currently in hospital.In Fugou County, about 40 houses were reported to have cracks or other damages.Tremor was felt across eastern Henan, including provincial capital Zhengzhou City.

YICHANG, Hubei, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The water level at the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest water control project, reached 164.59 meters on Sunday, only 10 meters short of its full capacity of 175-meters, said a project official.The dam in central China started to hold back water this September by discharging less to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the country's longest river.Reaching the 175-meter water level would enable the Three Gorges Dam to fulfill its functions of flood control and generating electricity to the fullest extent, symbolizing the total success of the massive water project.This is the reservoir's third attempt to reach full capacity since 2008. However, water levels stopped at 172.8 meters in 2008 and 171.43 meters in 2009 due to droughts on the lower reaches.However, this time officials believe the dam will reach full capacity by the end of October."We have confidence in reaching the goal this year. Although less water flowed into the dam after the flood season, we have reduced water discharges accordingly," said Yuan Jie, an official in charge of water level control.
