The Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday that some people and companies are trying to profit from this pandemic by selling unproven and illegally marketed products that make false claims, such as being effective against the coronavirus. The FDA says that products that claim to cure, treat, or prevent COVID-19 haven't been evaluated by the FDA for safety and effectiveness, and calls said products "dangerous."Wednesday's announcement comes two weeks after the FDA previously announced it sent letters to a number of companies that sell products that allegedly claim to treat or prevent coronavirus. Simply put, if there are any products that claim to treat or cure coronavirus, the FDA says not to buy it."The FDA is working with medical product developers to rapidly advance the development and availability of vaccines and treatments for COVID-19. Although there are investigational COVID-19 vaccines and treatments being studied in clinical trials, these products are in the early stages of development. They haven't yet been fully tested for safety or effectiveness, or received FDA approval," the FDA said on Wednesday,' the FDA said. The FDA is requesting the public to report suspected fraud to the FDA's 1235
Technology used at South Florida grocery chain is taking online grocery shopping to the next level. The sound of plastic bins flying around on a conveyor belt is music to Javier Herran's ears. “I refer to it as a symphony of chaos,” Herran says. The well-oiled machine does all the grocery shopping for you. “It’s basically a giant vending machine,” Herran describes. Except this vending machine can hold over 100,000 items for Sedano's supermarkets’ new online ordering platform. “This is the first automated micro-fulfillment center in the world,” explains Curt Avalon with Takeoff Technology, the company that developed the robotic system. Instead of an employee walking through a store to manually gather the items in an online order, the machine does all the work. It travels through a system of conveyors and elevators, bringing the shelves to the employees. "So we can pick an item in about three seconds, where if you're shopping on the sales floor, its 60 to 90 seconds an item,” Avalon says. That efficiency is what sold Herran, who is Sedano's marketing director. "We can get an order done in 10 minutes or less versus an hour or hour and a half shopping on the sales floor," Avalon says. Finished orders are taken to an online pickup area in Sedano’s various stores for customer’s to pick up. The robot isn’t replacing human jobs. Sedano's says it’s actually adding jobs, since the warehouse must be manned. 1433

Thanksgiving is one of the biggest days of the year for food waste. The Natural Resources Defense Council estimates 200 million pounds of turkey meat are thrown out over the holiday week. But organizations across the U.S. are looking to make that percentage smaller, including Denver-based 301
The Internal Revenue Service issued a warning Friday about a new twist on the usual impersonation phone scam. Officials say criminals are faking calls from the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), an independent organization within the IRS. Similar to other IRS impersonation scams, the con artist makes unsolicited calls to the victim, falsely claiming to be from the IRS. But now scammers have discovered a way to "spoof" the phone number of the TAS office in Houston or New York. The victim answers or returns the call, the criminal requests personal information, including a Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number. The TAS office helps taxpayers resolve IRS issues, such as sudden financial difficulty, but does not call residents out of the blue. Characteristics of the calls are: Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers to identify themselves.Scammers may know the last four digits of the taxpayer’s Social Security number.Scammers spoof caller ID to make the phone number appear as if the IRS or another local law enforcement agency is calling.Scammers may send bogus IRS emails to victims to support their bogus calls.Victims hear background noise of other calls to mimic a call site. After threatening victims with jail time or with driver’s license or other professional license revocation, scammers hang up. Others soon call back pretending to be from local law enforcement agencies or the Department of Motor Vehicles, and caller ID again supports their claim. The IRS will never: Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes.Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have the taxpayer arrested for not paying.Demand that taxes be paid without giving taxpayers the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.Call about an unexpected refund. For taxpayers who don’t owe taxes or don’t think they do:Please report IRS or Treasury-related fraudulent calls to phishing@irs.gov (Subject: IRS Phone Scam).Do not give out any information. Hang up immediately. The longer the con artist is engaged; the more opportunity he/she believes exists, potentially prompting more calls.Contact TIGTA to report the call. Use their IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting web page. Alternatively, call 1-800-366-4484.Report it to the Federal Trade Commission. Use the “FTC Complaint Assistant” on FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" in the notes. For those who owe taxes or think they do:Call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help.View tax account online.
