CLEVELAND, Ohio. – Following shootings inside houses of worship around the world, many churches are reconsidering their security measures. “We celebrate our love for Christ and our love for each other,” said Senior Pastor Kregg Burris at First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland Ohio. Instead of just focusing on the message of faith, pastors like Kregg are now having to put more thought into keeping their congregation safe during services. “There's the old sense that I’m going to trust God,” he said. “Then there’s the realism of, well in the world we live in where people don’t recognize and understand the sacredness of the space.” He said the congregation has had to take steps in order to try and protect their people, but do it in a respectful manner. Just over a year ago, the security team was formed. “We just live in a world where reality exists that some people have a different world view than we have,” said Monroe Goins, a member of the church and part of the security team, who has almost three decades of law enforcement experience. From using walkie talkie to installing security cameras and new door systems, First Baptist of Greater Cleveland has implemented a number of safety measures since 2018. “I believe churches should have a plan in place,” he said. Following attacks at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, a mosque in New Zealand, and multiple houses of worship in Texas, Goins said he has seen an increase in violence. Now, the state of Ohio is taking a hands on approach. The Ohio Emergency Management Agency announced they now have a toolkit to help, available to download for free. “We’ve seen across the country the incidents,” said Tom Stickrath, the Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety. “And how tragic they can be.” The toolkit provides presentations, planning documents, and case studies for churches.“It’s a tool people can choose to use,” Stickrath said. “It’s been downloaded more than 600 times by organizations in 29 states.” That was only a week after the toolkit was released.“It provided scenario-based tabletop exercises,” Goins said. The toolkit came out shortly after the church shooting in White Settlement, Texas. Two people died before the gunman was taken down.But not everyone is on board with the idea of the toolkit. “This is not something we could endorse or recommend to churches,” said Kristine Eggert, a former pastor and the Executive Director of gun violence organization God Before Guns. “For there to be a toolkit about gun violence in a church that is not taking into account anything about peoples theology, about what people believe, and about what church is.” She said there are other ways to keep each other safe.“Among talking to other pastors, as they’re looking at preparing their budgets more money is earmarked for security,” Pastor Burris said. Later, she received a Jet Blue credit card in the mail, for which she had also not signed up. She said she also received an alert from Bank of America about a second credit card that she had no knowledge of."Then, at that point, I said, 'OK, there’s something going on here,'" she said.USPS released this statement: In a very few cases, an individual’s identity has already been compromised by a criminal who then has used it to set up an Informed Delivery Account. I want to get that done before I’m 80 years old,” says 78-year-old Bonnie Thurston on how much she can deadlift. Thurston says she’s been active her whole life, but never thought she would powerlift. Seven years ago, Thurston struggled with osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle, increasing risk of fractures. Then, Thurston found a powerlifting group for seniors. "I now weigh more than I weighed when I started this, but I wear the same size clothes, and the reason is I have stronger bones and larger bones and more muscle in my body than I did when I started this," she says. These group of seniors deadlift; they bench and they pull sleds. And while Thurston is doing all of this, she pushes 80. Thurston is not even the oldest person at the gym. Edith Murway-Traina is a member and is 97 years old. “I've always had muscles, I just had to learn to use them," she says. Bill Beekley leads the group. He's trained powerlifters since the 90s. "Don't be intimidated by what these ladies are doing, because they all started just moving their bodies," Beekley says. He says lifting correctly can help increase bone density and fight conditions like osteoporosis. It also helps these women in everyday life. "It's very functional,” the instructor says. “Some say they can carry their groceries a little easier now and don't need help getting groceries in an out of the car.” For 97-year-old Murway-Traina, she says that movement is so important as she nears 100. “The more you move, the more exercise you get, the more your body responds,” she says. Murway-Traina says she was nervous about the idea of powerlifting at first, but she now does it three times a week. "When you start being too old for something, you are too old for something, you have to know you are capable of doing what you want to make yourself do," Murway-Traina says. Research agrees. Bill Chavez has always been fascinated with big trucks. He comes from a long line of truckers, which is one of the reasons he’s devoted his life for 39 years to the profession. To most people, Chavez’s truck looks like any traditional semi. However, it’s not ordinary, because with a push of a button, it can drive itself. “What we’re trying to do is create the world’s safest self-driving trucks,” says Chuck Price, the chief product officer of TuSimple, the company behind the self-driving semis. TuSimple is currently operating 15 self-driving semis, and Price says by June, they'll have three times that number. “This is actually a laser radar unit; we call it lidar, built into the mirror. This gives us a close-in view,” Price describes. “Then, we have cameras along the top of the vehicle that show us…much further away.” TuSimple’s trucks are already in the southwest part of the country, on interstates across the region. "Our systems see farther, track more objects and respond faster than a human can operate," Price says. Right now, a human must be in the trucks at all times as back-up protocol, but the company says a fully self-driving semi could happen by 2020. "It's just very enjoyable to be out there on the road and being your own boss," Chavez says. He knows that a time may come where drivers might be replaced by this technology. However, he's OK with that idea and says roads will be safer for everyone.
