SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mountain lion euthanized by California Department of Fish and Wildlife wardens is the same animal responsible for attacking a boy at Los Pe?asquitos Canyon Preserve, CDFW announced Friday. The 4-year-old boy was among 11 people hiking the North San Diego County trail Memorial Day when the 80-pound female mountain lion attacked him. Wardens who went to the scene found the animal’s tracks and encountered it moments later. The mountain lion appeared to have little fear of humans: an abnormal behavior, CDFW said. RELATED: Boy attacked by mountain lion in San Diego's Los Pe?asquitos Canyon“The wildlife officers immediately killed the animal to ensure public safety and to collect forensic evidence to potentially match the mountain lion to the victim,” said CDFW officials in a news release. City park officials closed the trail for the public’s safety. DNA analysis from the boy and samples from the animal confirmed the euthanized mountain lion was responsible for injuring the boy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The door-to-door salesman accused of taking swings at a Pacific Beach woman and a string of threatening outbursts while canvassing neighborhoods is behind bars.An arrest warrant was issued on Dec. 6, 2019, for 45-year-old Corey Lamont Terry on felony charges of making criminal threats and attempted burglary, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. According to San Diego Police, Terry was arrested by Sheriff's deputies on Jan. 9. He is currently being held on 0,000 bail.RELATED: Woman records confrontation with man claiming to be charity worker Police had been investigating Terry since November 2019 after several San Diegans complained of his aggressive language while he solicited money door-to-door, SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi told 10News. Terry had reportedly been visiting neighborhoods in Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach, claiming to be raising money for charity.Several people told 10News he would become aggressive when he was denied donations."He chases me across the street, screaming that he's going to kill me," Sarah Jarzabek told 10News. "Scared to death, honestly."Jarzabek recorded video of a confrontation with Terry on Nov. 2, 2019. SDPD positively identified the man who reportedly swung at Jarzabek as Terry. He was detained and questioned the next day, but ultimately released.“It’s a little bit concerning he’s still out there,” said John Christenson, an Ocean Beach resident who said he encountered Terry on Oct. 16, 2019. “Basically said that he did want to knock me out, was getting in my face, calling me all kinds of names. Finally he did leave but not before spitting in my face." 1661

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The addition of 536 new homes on a former golf course in Rancho Penasquitos won't clog the one road leading out of the neighborhood in the event of an emergency evacuation, according to a new city study. The city released the environmental impact reporter for Lennar's Juniper proposal on Wednesday. Lennar is proposing to turn the languishing course behind the old Hotel Karlan on Penasquitos Drive into 536 housing units for senior citizens, including 81 affordable. The project also includes a nearly three acre public park, a three-mile trail. The environmental document analyzes impacts such as noise and traffic. It also looked at how the additional homes would impact evacuations in the northeast portion of Rancho Penasquitos, a neighborhood with only one road in and out. The document said there would be a less than significant impact on getting out fast for two reasons - first, a wildfire that starts in the Black Mountain Open Space park to the west would be blown away from the site by Santa Ana winds. Secondly, the site is not prone to wildfire because it is protected by developed terrain. "As part of the EIR, a fire risk analysis determined potential impacts related to wildfire hazards from implementation of the project would be less than significant and the project’s Wildland Fire Evacuation Plan demonstrates that timely evacuation of the site is feasible and would be improved by the additional roadway and emergency egress connections provided by the project," said city spokesman Anthony Santacroce. Additionally, plans call for adding a road into and out of the Juniper complex from Carmel Mountain Road, with emergency access. It would add a traffic light and roundabout to Penasquitos Drive, and improve an emergency access road on the opposite side of the neighborhood. Still, a group of residents is raising concerns that the Juniper project, combined with another potential 350 on the hotel site, would clog the one road leaving the area. Junaid Razvi, who heads the Penasquitos Northeast Action Group, noted Santa Ana winds are unpredictable and has had to evacuate three times in the last 15 years. "To put it mildly, I don't think we're getting the whole picture here," said Razvi. "We are not nimbys. I think the development has to be sensible terms of density, the access, ingress and egress points."Razvi's group said it plans to meet with Councilman Mark Kersey in the next few weeks to air their concerns. In a statement, the councilman said he understands where they are coming from. "Given our region's history, I understand and share residents' concerns about wildfire preparedness," he said. "Nothing is more important to me than public safety, especially when it comes to fire risk, and fire safety will be a primary concern when I evaluate any development proposal that comes before the City Council for approval."San Diegans have until April 6 to submit their comments on the EIR. 2957

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Federal Reserve's decision to lower its key interest rate to near zero will help some San Diegans, but frustrate others. The Fed reduced its Federal Funds Rate to near zero for the first time since the Great Recession of 2008. The move, in reponse to the Coronavirus outbreak, will help keep auto loan rates low and mortgage rates near historic lows. It will also, however, lower earnings from interest bearing savings accounts. Greg McBride, chief financial analyst for Bankrate, predicted the economy to go into a recession, but said the low borrowing rates would help jump start spending once activity picks up again. "Coming out of that, one of the things that's going to give the economy a boost to recover from that will be these brutally low interest rates that entice consumers and businesses to resume borrowing and spending," McBride said. "Somebody concerned about losing their job is not going to go to go out and buy a car."Mortgage rates are already extremely low, with the average rate for a 30-year fixed is 3.36 percent. Still, that's above the all-time lows reached earlier this month, when the Federal Reserve made its first emergency cut. Mark Goldman, a loan officer for C2 Financial Corp., said there has been a rush to refinance since that earlier drop — a big reason why rates did not fall deeper."There's so much refinancing business going on right now that lenders can't stand a lot more business, so they price accordingly," Goldman said. Still, those mortgages rates will remain low as San Diego County enters what's typically its peak home buying season. 1613
