HARLEM, Manhattan — A 100-year-old woman in Harlem is serious about filling out the census. Heading to the streets with a bullhorn this week to celebrate her birthday, Katherine Nelms Nichson bellowed to her neighborhood to fill out the census.“Be counted in the census," she said at the corner of Lenox Avenue and 135th Street. "Come up off your butt."The deadline is weeks away. Officials around the country are worried the shortened timeline, impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak this year, will mean fewer responses than normal. Senator Brian Benjamin of Harlem said it’s not just on Nichson's birthday, but every day she's a political powerhouse.Julie Menin, the director of NYC Census 2020, said Nichson’s message is especially critical right now because New York City is facing an economic crisis. As of Friday, New York City had a response rate of 59.3 percent compared to the nationwide rate of 65.7 percent. The census is a survey required by the U.S. Constitution. It takes just 10 minutes to fill out and can be done online. Why is it so important? Its results are used to determine how much money municipalities gets from Washington for everything from housing to hospitals, roads, bridges, and schools. It is also used to determine the amount of representation a state has in Congress.Keith Wright, the leader of the New York County Democrats, hopes Nichson’s energy and enthusiasm will inspire people to just do it.The census deadline is Sept. 30.Fill out your census here. This story originally reported by Monica Morales on pix11.com. 1553

HARPERS FERRY, W.V. – For more than 2,000 miles, the Appalachian Trail winds its way through more than a dozen states. It’s so-called “psychological midpoint” is the town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.“This community represents all the communities up and down the trail,” said Sandy Marra, who heads up the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.Ever since the pandemic began, she said there’s been a noticeable increase in people hiking the trail.“On any given weekday, even in the dead of summer, typically you wouldn't see anyone out on our trails,” Marra said. “And during the week now, you could see dozens and dozens of people just hiking.”That’s something other public lands across the country are seeing, too, in the time of COVID-19 and social distancing.Deborah Williams is with the Outdoor Industry Association, based in Colorado.“We did see a trend of more people exploring the outdoors in March and April and then that really did continue into May and June,” Williams said. “And what we initially saw is a little bit of escapism, in the first few weeks, actually continued.”That outdoor recreation can have a big impact on the economy. In West Virginia, for example, the outdoor industry is responsible for more than 91,000 direct jobs, 0 million in local and state tax revenue and billion in consumer spending.Across the country, it all adds up to 7 billion in consumer spending, supporting 7.6 million jobs.Williams said there’s the potential for that to grow even more in every state across America, in part, because of federal funding from the new “Great American Outdoors Act,” which was just passed by Congress and signed into law by the president.“It will fully fund the land and water conservation fund to the tune of 0 million,” Williams said. “So, this is our country's really flagship mechanism for funding conservation and maintenance of our public lands and waters.”Back at the Appalachian Trail, Sandy Marra hopes people now rediscovering the outdoors take care to protect it, as well.“Because of the pandemic and so many people wanting to get outside, the resource was being overwhelmed,” she said. “This is a great chance for us to reach a whole new audience of people. This is their park, right? So, they get to use it and enjoy it, but they also have a responsibility too.”It's a responsibility that can help future generations experience what’s great about the great outdoors. 2419

Game after game, LeBron James carried the Cavs against the Indiana Pacers, and the people at "Saturday Night Live" noticed.Boy, did they notice. In a skit that went unaired, "SNL" poked fun at "The Other Cavaliers" who will do anything for their fearless leader as long as it doesn't involve defense or scoring any points. Anything? Yep. From giving LeBron a high-five to holding his several cell phones, his teammates are always there when he needs them, unless it's for something important. In the show's defense, the sketch was probably written early in the week, before the Cavs went up 3-0 against the Raptors.  642

Have you ever wanted to own a Jelly Belly factory? Well, the man behind the Jelly Belly name, David Klein, is offering people the chance to do just that.According to a press release, Klein is getting ready to retire and wants to allow someone to win thousands of dollars, plus their very own candy factory.Klein and his partner have hidden "gold-style tickets in the form of necklaces" across the nation to host treasure hunts in each state. To join the search, or to receive valuable clues, you must purchase a .99 ticket for each state."The biggest and best part of these treasure hunts is that anyone who joins at least one treasure hunt will be eligible to search for THE ULTIMATE TREASURE, which will be the key to one of his candy factories and an all-expenses-paid trip and education to a candy-making university," Klein said.Klein said that each treasure hunt is valued at ,000, and only 1,000 people can participate in each treasure hunt. The Jelly Belly Candy Company released the following statement to clear up any misconceptions about the contest Klein is hosting: 1088

Heavy rain this week could help quench the Camp Fire burning in Northern California, bringing with it an end to the threat of more wildfires this year but also new dangers. The rain will end "fire concerns for the winter," Robert Baruffaldi, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service's Sacramento office, told CNN Monday night. However, officials in Butte County are warning residents already devastated by the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in the state's history that rain arriving Wednesday could cause flash flooding and mudflows. The Camp Fire has killed 79 people, 64 of whom authorities have tentatively identified. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch from Wednesday through Friday for the Camp Fire area. 756
