OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Oceanside has unveiled its latest effort to achieve their zero waste goals set back in 2011.Green Oceanside Kitchen is a state-of-the-art food recovery and preservation facility dedicated to eliminating waste and feeding the community."We need to do better, we need to feed our community and educate our community," said Colleen Foster, the City's Environmental Officer. The City teamed up with O'Side Kitchen Collaborative for the new project. They'll collect unwanted food from farmers, backyards, and food businesses, turning the goods into something delicious. "I could've done anything, but for me, making an impact in my community as well as it tasting good is the best!" said Vallie Gilley, Executive Director of O' side Kitchen Collaborative. The facility includes a 1,700 square foot commercial kitchen and a 500 square foot fridge that can hold about a semi-truck load of food. There's also an interactive demonstration kitchen for culinary arts training and education. Foster says more than 40 percent of what is grown and produced in the U.S. is wasted. With the new green facility, planners hope to save 20 percent of what would've gone to waste."That's thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of pounds of food," said Foster. On Monday, Johns Hopkins University reported that the U.S. had recorded its 6 millionth confirmed case of COVID-19 — another grim milestone in a pandemic that continues to ravage the country like no other nation across the planet.Though the daily number of new cases has fallen in recent days, the U.S. still has more than 2 million more confirmed cases than any other country. The U.S. also has the most COVID-19 deaths with more than 180,000.Despite falling case numbers, the U.S. is still reporting more than 40,000 new cases of COVID-19 each day — which currently ranks as the second-highest in the world, behind India.For the past month, deaths per day linked to COVID-19 have held fairly consistent, peaking at 1,000 per day while falling to a few hundred on weekends. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) - Police are searching for the suspect who reportedly shot a man at the Oceanside Transit Center Saturday night. Oceanside Police officers were called to the scene around 7:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a gunshot victim. When officers arrived, they found the victim on the ground suffering a gunshot wound the abdomen. The man was flown to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. At some point, the victim told police the suspect was staying at the Motel 6 along North Coast Highway. Police searched the hotel room the suspect was reportedly staying in, but the suspect wasn’t found. The shooting doesn't appear to be gang relates, police say. 683

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Defense attorneys for 15 Marines accused of human smuggling said they hope the judge dismisses the case.The attorneys argued that the Commander illegally used his power to discipline the Marines publicly, and therefore influenced the outcome of the case.It was a very public display of discipline.Fifteen Camp Pendleton Marines were cuffed and taken away by NCIS agents in front of an 800-person battalion formation in July. They were accused of human smuggling and conspiracy.But now, attorneys representing a few of the accused Marines said the public arrests violated their rights. Now, they are filing what's called an "undue command influence" motion against the Battalion Commander who led the formation."Anytime you have a Commander who is in a position of leadership who potentially affects a subordinate's rights to a fair trial, that can be viewed as potential 'undue command influence,'" military attorney Gary Barthel explained. "This motion for 'undue command influence' was made against the Battalion Commander for making comments and parading the 15 individuals out for what was supposed to be a recognition, and they were ultimately arrested." Barthel is a former legal advisor to Camp Pendleton's Commanding General. He said a Commanding Officer's job is to maintain good order and discipline their command. But in military law, they also wear the prosecutor and jury selector hats."Those two hats can clash," Barthel said. "That's why it's important for Commanding Officers to be careful what they say with regard to their views of the military justice system, or their views of a particular individual who has been accused of an offense."The defense team said the Commander used his power to influence the outcome of the case unfairly. But Barthel said in his experience with 'undue command influence' cases, he believes the military has likely already taken the Commander in question off the case."You can take the individual that allegedly made the statements involved out of the process, and that keeps the process fair and impartial," Barthel said.
