SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Just in time for the Fourth of July, the Mission Beach Plunge pool is reopening to the public. The iconic pool was one of the original attractions when the amusement park opened in 1925. However, it had run into hard times in recent years and has been closed for much of the last decade. One management company went bankrupt. The next came up with a renovation plan, only to discover dangerous, corroding conditions inside, leading to the pool's closure in 2014.Thanks to a partnership between the City of San Diego, Fit Athletic, and Pacifica Enterprises, the renovated pool is almost unrecognizable. "This is absolutely special, incredible," said Dr. McQuary, a longtime San Diego resident who is active in the community."What I remember about the Plunge was the issues and concerns about how we can swim and still be safe. When things would fall from the sky, it wasn't rain; it was the plaster from the ceiling!"The Plunge at Fit features floor to wall glass ceilings and a retractable roof. It also incorporates some of the building's original features, replicating the tiling and original archways.Part of the new Fit Athletic Mission Beach gym, the facility also offers beach views throughout. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a typical year, California teachers spend an average of 4 of their own money on classroom supplies, but with districts preparing for distance learning this fall, educators are facing a different set of expenses.In the Vista Unified School District, 5th-grade teacher Keri Avila said she had to create a home office, starting with upgrading her internet.“I think in the beginning it was an oversight. The schools did a really good job making sure students had connectivity and I think you expect teachers would have the connectivity they need. But a lot of us didn’t,” said Avila, who is also the vice president of the Vista Teachers Association.Many teachers in the South Bay Union School District had to upgrade their internet bandwidth, especially with other family members working from home simultaneously, said Vanessa Barrera, a 3rd-grade teacher, and president of the Southwest Teachers Association.In a survey at the beginning of the pandemic, 1% of the teachers in her district said they had no internet at all. Twenty-five percent said they lacked a home office workspace, she said.Although districts provided laptops for educators, some teachers purchased office furniture, web cameras, specialty applications, and other equipment to facilitate lessons.“In our district, we were just provided with our laptop," Barrera said. "We were not allowed to bring home the printers, document cameras, Elmos.”An Elmo is similar to an overhead transparency projector that connects to a computer. Barrera said some teachers in her district had to rig together solutions of their own, using cell phones and flexible stands purchased online.Districts have pledged to roll out mobile hotspots to teachers with connectivity issues, but the cost of upgraded home internet continues to be the subject of negotiations between districts and unions, Avila and Barrera said.Classroom costs could rise once students return to campuses because of CDC guidance that kids should not share supplies.“Previously you might have bought a pencil box for a table to share, well that’s not going to be acceptable now,” said Barrera. “Whatever the cost will be for the coming year will depend on what this school year will look like, but as teachers we just forfeit the money to make sure students have what they need.” 2328

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It sounds like a deal of a lifetime - guarantee a weeklong vacation at a coastal resort every year - for a one-time payment of 0.The county of San Diego is auctioning off nearly 900 timeshares, some in areas like Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and downtown for as little as 0. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In response to a rise in coronavirus cases among San Diego State students, the campus said Wednesday it will move all its classes online for the next month.The school says it has recorded 64 confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases in students since the start of fall classes on Aug. 24, but that doesn't mean there is an outbreak on campus. Many of the cases have come from students living off-campus. The school says 15 cases out of 7,997 on-campus students have been reported since the start of the semester.A little more than 100 students are currently quarantined out of an abundance of caution, said Andrea Dooley, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs.One of the positive cases arrived in San Diego from out of state, according to County Medical Director Dr. Eric McDonald. McDonald said there is one off-campus gathering under investigation as to whether it meets the "outbreak" designation.RELATED: San Diego State fraternities ban social events this fall due to COVID-19In response to the growing number of students testing positive, SDSU moved all classes online for the next four weeks. The campus had been hosting about 200 classes in-person, many of which were lab classes that were determined to only be possible in person.Starting Sept. 3, all athletic events have also been paused for two weeks."We understand there may be some frustration with this decision ... the shift to the virtual space does not impact our students who are living on campus," said Luke Wood, Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity. For those isolated, a hygiene kit and food and meal delivery are provided by SDSU to those isolated students, Wood says.To address off-campus students testing positive, the school had banned fraternity events and instituted several policies to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Those policies include hiring security to patrol the campus after hours, document violations, and report to staff who handle disciplinary action.
