SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's a problem on the rise in communities across San Diego; drivers racing down side streets to avoid rush hour traffic. When Doug Doyen saw speeding on his street, he tried to stop it. "It was almost like the Indy 500 I couldn't believe the speed, the amount of traffic and speed up and down this street," said Doyen.He put up his own signs to get drivers to slow down. "Hold the sign out, wave at them, people would be like, 'what the? Oh okay."' said Doyen. "And they'd look at me like, 'who is this guy?'" But the speeding is still a problem. He thinks GPS apps are directing drivers to his side street to avoid freeway traffic. "I couldn't believe the traffic and the speeds I was seeing out here," he said. Neighbors joined San Diego Police to form a Pace Car Program. But few have had to endure the hurdles of Bryce Olson."I started to come to terms with my own mortality," said Olson in November of 2018. "I didn't even think I would see my kid get out of elementary school, and I started losing hope."We have been following Bryce Olson's story for over two years. We profiled the Oregon man because he had been traveling to San Diego for research and precision therapies for his Stage 4 Metastatic Prostate Cancer. And then the pandemic hit."It makes me feel that I'm a sitting duck," added Olson back in March.Our Michael Chen revisited Olson nine months ago at the beginning of the pandemic. COVID-19 cases were on the rise, and Olson had to weigh the risk of traveling with a weak immune system or slowly dying without his treatment."It was kind of this Sophie's Choice issue of, you know I might die of cancer in the long term, but gosh COVID could kill me in the short term," said Olson just last week.But instead, something remarkable happened when Olson's story started spreading."And then your piece aired, and an amazing individual, super generous, kind individual saw that, and he had access to private transportation," said Olson with a smile.That good Samaritan was co-founder and former CEO of Sprouts, Shon Boney. He provided a private plane so Bryce could fly into San Diego for his treatments until he was healthy enough to fly commercially."He got me out of my shell," added Olson. "He got me back into San Diego, comfortable going into the hospital with my N95 mask and he increased my confidence in being able to do this."The timing was perfect. Olson couldn't spare another missed treatment. The cancer had spread to his spine, and within weeks he would have been unable to walk. But that was just the beginning of his renewed hope. WIRED then picked up Olson's story, which has led to even more attention, a consortium of his case study and the potential for revolutionary experimental therapies through Research to the People benefiting not just Olson but millions of other cancer patients."What's happened post WIRED is I've got all these researchers, scientists, and medical professionals that want to help me take this amazing set of data," added Olson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer Saturday detailed plans to redevelop the Sports Arena site, officially announcing what developers will tackle the project.According to Faulconer, the plan incorporates a mix of entertainment, housing, and parks."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said. "A new arena has always been a priority of mine, and it's the right time."Brookfield Housing and ASM Global were chosen to construct the new arena and thousands of housing units, beating out the other finalist, Toll Brothers Housing.The redevelopment area encompasses roughly 48 acres in the Midway-Pacific Highway Community area. At the press conference, representatives from the Gulls and the Seals spoke, saying they're excited for their teams to play in the new space. Faulconer said the city's goal is to include a new arena to replace Pechanga Arena."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said. "A new arena has always been a priority of mine, and it's the right time."The city also released several renderings of the planned development. Leaders said they are now looking toward November when Measure E will be on the ballot. This will determine if the 30-foot maximum height for buildings will remain, or if it will be raised. This will impact how tall the new facilities will be.San Diego Loyal SC, which had plans to build a modular soccer stadium at the site, commented on the announcement following the news conference. "Though the news from the city today felt like a punch in the gut, years being married to the sport of soccer has taught me that sometimes you can win on the field and not get the result that matters.
