He and his family are lucky because a decade ago, they fled violence in Iraq, becoming refugees and resettling in Austin, Texas. “To be a refugee is not a choice,” he said. “Not a choice.” Refugees like Ayman, though, may no longer be able to count on Texas for a fresh start. Governor Greg Abbott said the state has already done more than its fair share. In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Gov. Abbott said that since 2010, “…roughly 10% of all refugees resettled in the United States have been placed in Texas.” He added that, “in addition to accepting refugees all these years, Texas has been left by Congress to deal with disproportionate migration issues resulting from a broken federal immigration system.” “There had been 41 other governors that had had come out and said, ‘yes, our state we would love to continue to accept refugees’ and that was a mix of Democrats and Republican governors, and so Gov. Abbott was the very first who had said no,” said Russell Smith, with Refugee Services of Texas, the largest resettlement agency in a state. Last year, Texas took in 2,227 refugees – the most of any state. It was followed by Washington, with 1,930 and California with 1,802. Overall, America is admitting fewer refugees. Back in 2016, President Barack Obama set a limit of 110,000 for the 2017 fiscal year. This year, President Donald Trump is setting a limit of 18,000. Though a judge put a temporary stop to the Texas plan, the potential for refugees to be rejected looms large here. “Every action has negatively affected resettlement at the same time,” Smith said. Whether the plan eventually goes through – or gets permanently rejected by the courts – remains to be seen. Back at his restaurant, Ayman says he and his family feel safe and welcomed in Austin. “You’re an active element in this community because we’re hiring people, we are providing people with good food, spread our culture – at the end of the day, you feel like you are doing a lot of good things in this community,” he said.The Trump administration has not said yet whether it will seek to appeal the federal judge’s decision, which stopped Texas from refusing refugees. 2356

Being a truck driver isn't the draw it used to be. At Excel Driver Services, they're grinding gears trying to figure out how to get more people behind the wheel of big rigs. “It's a big issue,” Excel owner Jason Emery said. “You've seen companies go out of business because they can't support growth because they can't get safe drivers to operate their equipment.” Emery says America has a major shortage of licensed truck drivers and the numbers support him. According to the American Trucking Associations, the industry was short more than 60,000 drivers in 2018 – that's almost a 20 percent increase from the year before. The ATA also reports a need to hire more than a million new drivers over the next decade to keep up with growing transportation demands. “There's a huge need for qualified truck drivers right now,” Emery said. “Every company in this town is looking for drivers right now.” Emery says the major reason for the decline is that many drivers are getting older and retiring. Now the industry is trying to attract younger drivers, people like Shelby Stennett – who is changing careers from a frack hand in the oil fields to a truck driver on the interstates. “As far as career-wise making that extra money and put that money in my pocket,” he said. “Being able to provide for myself and my family and my friends. It's important to me because I got to eat. I got to eat to survive.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the starting pay for a truck driver is ,000 per year. After a few years on the road, however, the ATA says drivers can easily make six figures driving an 18-wheeler. Despite the pay, this job isn't for everyone. Drivers can spend weeks on the road alone and sleep in their rigs. Now economists say fewer truck drivers on the road could end up costing you a lot more money. “For the last several years we've gotten used to free shipping and one-day shipping and give it to me right now,” said Christina Huber, Ph.D. a professor of economics at Metropolitan State University Denver. “Maybe that can't continue.” Huber says with more online shopping and fewer drivers to transport the goods, shipping costs could skyrocket. “If they're having trouble attracting drivers to the industry the only way to alleviate that shortage is to make it more attractive for them to enter,” she said. To attract more drivers, many companies are increasing pay. A Union Pacific train hauling lumber and other chemicals derailed and caught fire early Wednesday morning while crossing a bridge over Tempe Town Lake, which caused a portion of the bridge to collapse.More than 90 firefighters from the Tempe Fire Department and other nearby agencies responded to the southern portion of Tempe Town Lake where they found several train cars on fire. Flames could be seen running the length of the bridge, sending dark clouds of smoke billowing into the air near Tempe Beach Park.Several firetrucks were seen spraying water on the flames for several hours Wednesday morning, while a fireboat was helping to spray water onto the flames and remnants of the fire from the lake.Tim McMahan, a spokesperson for Union Pacific Railroad, said in an email that eight to 10 train cars were reported to be on fire. He said none of the train's crew were injured, but said one person was treated for smoke inhalation. When the south side of the bridge collapsed, three tank cars fell below it. Two of those cars were hauling cyclohexane and the other was hauling a rubber material, McMahan said in an email. Cyclohexane is a class ii combustible liquid that smells like acetone or peppermint, according to the CDC's website.McMahan said none of the three tanks were involved in the fire and were not believed to be leaking any material.As a result of the investigation, several roadways near Tempe Town Lake, including portions of the Loop 202 Freeway, have remained closed throughout much of the day. Tempe Beach Park is also closed. All classes and boating activities were quickly canceled, the City of Tempe said in a news release. Valley Metro has also terminated its eastbound service at 38th Street and Washington and westbound at Smith-Martin and Apache.
