(KGTV) - A new event venue is honoring the history of the South Bay, while giving people a gorgeous view for their parties and meetings.Salt Drift Pointe, at 536 13th Street, has 13,000 square feet of space. It includes a main room, a bar, patio, pier and more."It's a huge blank space," says Co-Owner Richard Inunza of the venue. "We've got a great atmosphere and great views."Inzunza and his co-owner Terry Snyder designed the venue specifically to try and pay homage to the South Bay. The "rustic wall" in the event space is painted to reflect the colors of the bay. And the name, Salt Drift Pointe, refers to the industrial history of the region.RELATED: New Chula Vista event space highlights city's rich history"When Rich and I thought about the name for this place, we wanted to grab the natural landscapes," says Snyder. "As you can see from the beautiful views we have of the salt ponds and the old salt mines, we wanted to include the salt."Salt played a big part in the South Bay story. According to San Diego History Center Historian Andy Strathman, it was the first industry that helped the region shift away from a farm-based economy during the late 1800s."You could build very large settling basins to bring the saltwater in and allow it to evaporate over time," says Strathman. "You would get the water increasingly saline, and eventually, you could harvest the salt."In the 21st century, the South Bay has shifted its economy again, trying to attract more tourists. The new Chula Vista Bayfront project is expected to bring in more than billion every year once it's completed.Inzunza and Snyder say it's fitting that a new business like theirs, which will tap into the hospitality industry, honors the past."We hope families can come and enjoy this place for years," says Snyder.To celebrate, Salt Drift Pointe is hosting a free grand opening party on Oct. 30. In an industry where worker’s knowledge and know how could mean the difference between life and death, hands-on training for EMTs isn’t what it used to be.“This is the first class that has had the entire course during the COVID pandemic,” said Patrick Dibb, lead EMT professor at Santa Ana College in Southern California.Dibb, a former fire chief, says coronavirus concerns have changed how future first responders are being educated.“I wouldn’t say it’s as good as it was prior,” Dibbs said.Not as good, Dibb says, because most EMT training has moved from in-person to online. During the pandemic, Santa Ana College now has one hands-on training session per semester.“Our ambulance companies and our emergency departments that the students are required to attend at least 24 hours of have not allowed us to return to those facilities until the COVID is clear,” Dibb said.Despite less hands-on training, there’s still a growing demand for this type of work and students like Coral Lucas are helping fill what experts say is a nationwide shortage of EMTs.“I feel like there’s more of an opportunity to get a job right now because we’re in such high demand,” she said.Part of the recruiting problem could be the pay. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, EMTs across the country make a median of an hour, leaving many people looking for other employment options during this pandemic.For students like Lucas, however, being on the front lines, even during a global crisis, is the place to be.“If I get sick and something happens, I’m at least doing something that’s helpful to others,” she said.But can these students actually help without any real-world experience?According to Dibb, yes.“The state of California requires an 80% on everything, and I’d say our students are meeting the 80% quota,” he said.“We expect them to come in with some basic knowledge, a foundation and then we build upon that foundation.”It's a foundation where training first responders online could become the new norm until there’s a vaccine. 2036

HUDSON, Ohio — A Hudson woman who hosted a large house party at a rental home in October was convicted in Municipal Court Tuesday for violating state health orders to prevent the spread of coronavirus.The woman was convicted of violations prohibited and criminal damaging, both second-degree misdemeanors, according to court records.On Oct. 10, the woman used a website to rent a home in the 6800 block of Windsor Road in Hudson, according to court records. More than 150 people attended the party, in excess of the number of people allowed by the mass gatherings order that limits groups to no more than 10 people.Attendees caused more than ,500 in damage to the property, according to court records.The Akron Beacon Journal reported that on the night of the party, police were called to the scene and multiple vehicles were towed throughout the night.
