UNIVERSITY CITY (KGTV) -- Several University City residents were rescued from their apartment balconies early Monday morning after their building became flooded in up to four feet of water from a busted fire hydrant.The incident first started around 1:30 a.m. when a motorist in an SUV crashed into a fire hydrant in the 9000 block of Genesee Avenue, in front of the Canyon Park Apartments across from La Jolla Country Day School.The sheared fire hydrant created a geyser that flooded the adjacent apartment building. Several lower level units became submerged in up to four feet of water. Some residents were forced out onto their balconies as waterfalls cascaded through their apartments and into the canyon below.Firefighters were able to rescue those trapped on their balconies without further incident. It took crews about a half hour to turn off the water.The American Red Cross was called in to help 22 adults, six dogs and a cat arrange for another place to stay.The driver told officers he fell asleep before crashing into the fire hydrant, San Diego Police officer Tony Martinez said. 1107

TROY, Mich. — A man from Warren who spent months fighting COVID-19 was finally released from the hospital.Zahid Raza was released Friday from Beaumont Hospital, where he'd been fighting COVID-19 since March.He said he still has lasting effects like wheezing, and because of the virus, he's also having problems with his kidneys.Zahid went into Beaumont Hospital in Troy on March 30 because he couldn't breathe. He said one of his last memories was hearing medical staff say they were using the last available ventilator on him.He spent the next several weeks in a coma — even his 65th birthday. Two New Jersey Transit buses collided outside the Lincoln Tunnel in Manhattan on Friday, injuring more than 30 people, fire officials said.The crash happened outside the north tube on the tunnel's Manhattan side. Two SWAT team members in Florida have reportedly been suspended for choosing to respond, without permission, to a shooting at a high school in Florida where 17 people tragically lost their lives.According to the Florida Sun-Sentinel, two Miramar, Florida, SWAT team members were on duty, in the area at the time of the shooting. The SWAT officers chose to respond to the school, despite not having been told to. According to the Miramar Police Department, their decision, "created an officer safety issue and left them unaccountable for their actions," the Sun-Sentinel reports. Detective Jeffrey Gilbert and Detective Carl Schlosser were notified of their suspension on February 22, the newspaper reports. They were instructed to turn in their SWAT-issued rifles immediately. The two reportedly remain on active duty for their other assignments.Union officials are defending the actions of the SWAT officers, saying that they were following their natural instincts to help those in need when they responded to the school. “While it may have been a violation of policy to not notify their supervisors that they were going there, their intentions were brave and heroic, I think,” Police Benevolent Association President Jeff Marano told the Sun-Sentinel.On Wednesday, a Florida grand jury has formally indicted Nikolas Cruz in the Parkland school shooting. VERO BEACH, Fla. — A Florida man is accused of coughing, sneezing and spitting inside a Best Buy in Vero Beach after he was asked to put on a mask.According to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, Alton Ashby, 51, approached the Geek Squad counter maskless and was asked by an employee to put on a mask.Deputies said Ashby dumped a package of masks on the store floor and then refused to leave.According to authorities, Ashby began sneezing, coughing and spitting on surfaces around the store.Deputies said Ashby walked to the front of the store carrying a soda, "which he sprayed everywhere as he was walking out."According to deputies, Ashby said he was "upset and is going through a lot this year and got carried away at the store."This story originally reported by Victoria Lewis on WPTV.com. 810
