UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- China will stick to the path of peaceful development and continue to pursue the policies of reform and opening-up and an independent foreign policy of peace, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Wednesday.     "The whole world wants to know in what direction China is heading" after the Beijing Olympic Games, Wen said in a speech delivered at the annual high-level debate of the United Nations General Assembly.     "Let me tell you in unequivocal terms that China will remain committed to the path of peaceful development, unswervingly pursue reform and opening-up, and continue to adhere to an independent foreign policy of peace," he said.     "This is in the fundamental interests of the Chinese people and the people of all other countries. It is also in keeping with the trend of the world." FUZHOU, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm to hit China's coast this year, made landfall in the southeastern Fujian Province on Monday, according to the provincial observatory.     The eye of the powerful typhoon landed at Donghan Town of Fuqing City at 10 p.m. with winds of up to 119 km per hour. Typhoon Fung Wong, which was lashing Taiwan on Monday morning, continued to strengthen as it headed toward the southeastern coast of mainland China, according to the observatory of Fujian Province. "Heavy rains and winds are expected after the eye leaves the town," an official with the flood control office of Fuqing City said.     Before the typhoon landed, Fuqing had seen torrential rain with 205 millimeters falling from midnight to 8 p.m. on Monday.     In Puxia County, the power was cut off as 15 electricity transmission lines and 498 transformer stations were damaged. But no casualties were reported.     The typhoon is also likely to bring more heavy rains and strong winds in coastal areas of the province early on Tuesday. The rainfall could exceed 200 millimeters, the meteorologists forecast.     Offshore, winds could increase to force 12, while in the coastal cities, force 7 to 9 winds were expected, according to the latest forecast of the provincial meteorological station.     Torrential rains were forecast to hit the cities of Ningde, Putian and Quanzhou as well as the provincial capital Fuzhou. BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank on Friday said it will continue international cooperation to tackle the global financial crisis and maintain market stability.     The pledge came two days after the People's Bank of China (PBOC) announced an interest rate cut in a co-ordinated global move to revive solvency in the international financial system.     The PBOC on Wednesday cut the benchmark lending and deposit rates by 0.27 percentage points and the reserve requirement ratio by 0.5 percentage points amid growing fears of a slowing economy and falling equities market.     "The PBOC will continue close contacts and cooperation with counterparts and international financial organizations to jointly maintain stability of global financial market," PBOC spokesman Li Chao told Xinhua.     The PBOC would closely watch the developments and effects of the crisis and take timely and flexibly measures according to changes in the domestic and international situations to guard against financial risks, Li said.     The global economic slowdown reduced demand for Chinese exports and inevitably affected China's economy, he said.     The central bank was fully confident and capable of dealing with the crisis and maintaining stable and relatively fast economic growth.     "China has a huge domestic market and the liquidity is abundant," he said. "As long as we take strong measures to boost domestic demand, the economy has big potential for sustainable growth."     A PBOC statement on the third-quarter meeting of its monetary policy committee said it would take flexible and prudent macro-economic control measures to boost economic growth.     The PBOC was not optimistic in its global economic outlook as intensifying fluctuations in the financial markets had affected the real economy.     It said it would boost coordination between monetary policies and fiscal, industry, export and financial regulation policies to help transform economic growth mode and boost domestic demand to balance international payments.
