SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several San Diego restaurants will donate a portion of proceeds next week to help Australia wildlife relief.OMG Hospitality Group's five restaurants (Union Kitchen and Tap in Encinitas and the Gaslamp, Pacific Beach AleHouse, Backyard Kitchen and Tap, and Waterbar) will donate 25 percent of sales from Monday, Jan. 20, to W.I.R.E.S. (Wildlife Information, Rescue, and Education Service). SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some beach cities throughout San Diego County Monday closed beaches as the COVID-19 outbreak continues to worsen. Following Gov. Gavin Newsom's stay at home order for California, several beach-side cities saw beachgoers enjoying the outdoors without the required six-foot social distancing.Monday, County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said the county will issue an amendment to the public heath order limiting social gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic. It looks like people are not able to do that," Wooten said. "We will be issuing an amendment to our health office's order that if jurisdictions are not able to enforce social gatherings then we will close beaches," Wooten said. Supervisor Nathan Fletcher added that people are encouraged to get exercise, but "what we don't want is the mass congregating of multiple social units."San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, however, didn't wait to see how that warning will play out around the county. "I have directed the [city] to move forward with closing all City-owned parks, beaches and trails. There were far too many ignoring physical distancing rules this weekend. The actions of a few can cost the lives of many. "Due to the number of people continuing to gather at city parks, trails and beaches, the City of Carlsbad announced it will temporarily close these public areas starting March 23 to help slow the spread of the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease," a city release stated.Carlsbad Police will enforce the closure using an "education-first" approach before issuing citations, the city said. Also late Monday night, the City of Encinitas announced it would be closing beaches. "The City of Encinitas is closing all City beaches, access points to beaches, and parking lots adjacent to beaches until further notice," city officials said in a news release.Imperial Beach followed suit, saying it would close its beaches "due to the inability to enforce social distancing," beginning Tuesday at 12 p.m.Sunday, San Diego Police officers shut down beach parking lots and discouraged large crowds from gathering. Officers began closing off parking lots, and even Fiesta Island, after dense crowds were seen at local beaches."The intention is to decrease the transmission of COVID-19," Wooten told reporters. "When we start to see our numbers come down, that's when we will reevaluate.""All these strategies are being done to flatten the curve."Also Monday, the State of California said it was closing state parks to vehicular traffic at some park units to reduce the density of visitors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Unified School District is warning parents and staff of a breach involving the personal data of students and staff.District official said in a release the breach dating back to January 2018 may have impacted the personal data of as many as 500,000 students enrolled in the district between the 2008-2009 and 2018-2019 school years.The data is believe to have been accessed by a phishing email effort, according to the district. Those staff members and parents affected have been alerted by SDUSD.Officials said investigators began looking into reports of phishing emails in October 2018. At that time, roughly 50 staff members whose accounts were compromised had security on their accounts reset immediately, according to the district. An investigation determined that unauthorized access was gained to the district’s network services, including their student database. The student database contains personal identifying information, potential health information, scheduling, and grade information.The district says it has since taken steps to prevent unauthorized access from reoccurring and to "eliminate" any continuing threat.SDUSD told 10News the breach wasn't announced until now because officials wanted to verify all their information and not compromise the investigation.“Data security has become an increasing concern for public agencies, corporations and private citizens nationwide,” Toren Allen, executive director of San Diego Unified’s Integrated Technology Department, said. “We are constantly reviewing our practices and systems in an effort to find efficiencies and to identify potential vulnerabilities.”The district recommends that anyone whose data may have been accessed to remain vigilant of their credit cards and account and contact a credit reporting agency to notify them of the breach of information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego is closed Thursday as a storm moves through the county. The theme park made the announcement Wednesday night after the first round of rain battered the area. Officials with SeaWorld say they plan to reopen the park Friday, Dec. 7. The park closed last Thursday, November 29 also due to the rain. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some families scrambling to deal with the challenges of distance learning will be getting some help from an unlikely source.For La Jolla High junior Katie Frost, 16, the upcoming school year will be a busy one. She's on the school's track team and JV basketball squad. Along with the usual coarse load, she will be taking college entrance exams. Frost has just added something else to her plate."During these times, people should think of ways to push themselves outside their comfort zone to help," said Frost.Keenly aware of how families are juggling the challenges served up with distance learning, Frost decided to offer free zoom tutoring sessions in math and English for local elementary and middle school students."I know how difficult school can be. I struggled in elementary school ... With the added stresses of distance learning, I'm just want to do my part to help these families and to help the kids excel," said Frost.Frost posted her services on the Nextdoor app, even put out an application. She already has four kids signed up and that number is expected to grow. Depending on the response, she could recruit her friends to create a tutoring club to help more families. Frost says she hopes other teens will also step up and volunteer their time tutoring as well."Instead of thinking of these times as a pause, you can think of it as a time you can change your life and the lives of others.
