SAN DIEGO( KGTV) - A Navy veteran has earned a spot with Federal Fire San Diego, getting hired the day she graduated from the fire academy.More competitive, Federal Fire is the civilian department which oversees San Diego naval bases. After serving her country, rookie Caitlyn Argeris says she wanted to serve her community.“She was hungry for it, we saw the fire get lit, and we wanted to nurture that," said Chief Mary Anderson. While still on active duty, the young mother took EMT classes at night“I wasn’t sure if I’d be strong enough, fast enough, have the mental aptitude or physical capabilities," said Argeris. "But you push through it and keep going."Chief Anderson says Argeris is the second Navy veteran they've hired on the spot after graduation.Anderson is on a mission to recruit more women into her department. They're at 2 percent, compared to the national average of about 5 percent.“Women bring something unique to the fire service: compassion," said Chief Anderson. "Once they realize they can do it, they catch that bug as well.”Argeris hopes her story will inspire other women to consider joining the fire service. 1142

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -Saturday was the second night five parks were under a new curfew across San Diego. Neighbors were mixed on whether it will affect crime.Police and neighbors celebrated the new curfew Friday at City Heights Square Mini Park. Police said since January 2019 there's been 217 crimes reported within 1,500 feet of the park, ranging from assault to theft.READ RELATED: Neighbors celebrate nightly curfew at San Diego parksRonald Tieken said he spearheaded the initiative, putting together a survey that he said 50 seniors in the building bordering the park responded to. He said the curfew is the first step in turning the tide in the neighborhood.Other neighbors disagree."It's probably going to up the rate of crime in this neighborhood," Ephraim Denmon III said they just need more people who will stand up to crime to fill the park. He said that or hire a security guard."If grown folks are in a grown folks park then they should let grown folks be grown folks," he said arguing the curfew takes away from the neighbors surrounding the park."You have your low income and your seniors, the seniors spend most of their time out here after midnight... Smoking a cigarette, drinking a coffee enjoying life," he said.Tieken said police are on his side, "they have high hopes that they don't have to come every 15 minutes to this park."City Heights Square Mini Park's nightly curfew is from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Cedar Ridge Mini Park, Montclair Neighborhood Park, North Park Community Park and North Park Mini Park have a curfew from midnight to 6 a.m. 1566

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California lawmakers will consider next year whether to decriminalize psychedelic drugs. The San Francisco Chronicle reports state Sen. Scott Wiener said Tuesday that he plans to introduce a bill decriminalizing possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms and other psychedelics. Oakland adopted a resolution last year decriminalizing certain natural psychedelics that come from plants and fungi. Oregon last week became the first state to legalize psychedelic mushrooms. Wiener said he was encouraged by those developments and is talking with experts about exactly what form his proposal should take. He said he was leaning toward Oregon’s supervised-use approach,. 690

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three people are dead following a crash on Interstate 805 in University City. The California Highway Patrol says the crash happened in the northbound lanes of I-805 at Miramar Road around 4:30 p.m.According to CHP, the crash happened after a wrong-way driver drove onto the road at a high rate of speed."Through the investigation, we will try to determined where this individual, if they got on the freeway the wrong way, where they got on," CHP Officer, Jake Sanchez said. Hector Puga was on his way to Los Angeles when the car in front of him combusted. He somehow managed to escape the crash and flames. "All I can do is hold onto the steering wheel and run over everything that exploded," Puga said. He escaped with just a flat tire and broken windshield.10News also spoke to a pair of sisters who had just finished up a fun day of shopping at UTC Mall when hopped into their car. Minutes later, they endured a near-death experience. "It was like a scene from a movie," she said. "All the cars were stopping. There was smoke. Fire. Loud noise. As soon as I look up in front of me, that car other there was flying and tumbling down the freeway."They said the driver of the flipped over SUV managed to crawl out of the car.  The survivors carried him to the shoulder, where an ambulance later picked him up. CHP said he endured broken bones, but is expected to recover. All lanes on the interstate were closed for several hours following the crash. Click here for traffic updates. Though it remains unclear if police are investigating the scene as connected to the incident on I-805, Thursday night police investigated a scene at Ashley Falls Elementary School in Carmel Valley. That's where a car rammed a campus gate, according to police. Students tell 10News the driver of a sports car tried to drive onto the soccer field before peeling out of the parking lot. 10News asked the CHP and SDPD whether the cases are connected, but have not gotten confirmation.Watch live video from the I-805 scene below: 2107

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A new California law could let convicted killers out of prison, and San Diego County's district attorney said her office will fight it on a case-by-case basis.Senate Bill 1437 passed the state Legislature last year and went into effect on January 1. It narrows the definition of murder so that only people who are involved in a killing can be charged with that crime. Before the law, accomplices in a killing could also have been charged with murder."It may let murderers go free, because of how far it goes," said San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan.Stephan said her office will challenge some re-sentencing hearings based on the new law, although she said they don't know how many there will be.One possible case involves Kurese Bell, who He as convicted of murder in 2016 for his role in the robbery of a North Park marijuana dispensary.During the robbery, Bell and another man, Marlon Thomas, got into a shootout with a security guard at the dispensary. The guard shot and killed Thomas. The DA's office argued that Bell should face murder charges because his actions in the robbery led to the shootout and, ultimately, Thomas' death.Bell is currently serving a 65-year-to-life sentence.Stephan said criminals need to be held accountable for the crimes they commit and cause."It's really important that each offender is held culpable at the right level," she said. "That's what justice is about."Supporters of the new law say it is a vital part of California's efforts at criminal justice reform. They say the old law unfairly targeted young minorities. On its website, the group Restore California says the new law makes sentencing in California more "equitable." They also say it gives accomplices an incentive to cooperate with investigators."In a co-defendant felony murder case, co-defendants who were not the actual killers, who did not aid and abet the killing, or who did not act with reckless indifference to human life will now have an incentive to talk and tell the truth about what happened," the website reads. 2073
