OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The Rugby team at MiraCosta College has qualified for the National Championships in Pittsburgh.The Spartans Rugby program is in its first full competitive season, and due to the lack of Junior College teams in Southern California, they play a schedule that consists of NCAA 4-year schools.The MiraCosta Rugby team is made up of around 40 players, many of whom have backgrounds in football and wrestling.The team doesn't lack for experience, as a few players have been playing for over 10 years, like Ian Crilly, who says he's pleased with the team's progression."I've been playing for about 12 years now, so it was a little rough with these first year players. Trying to get them up to speed but we got there," said Crilly.The Spartans begin play in the National Championships on April 21, and win or lose, they feel all there success this season has put the school on the map for athletics. They hope their success will get more kids, both men and women, to come out for the sport.  1028

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (CNS) - Police identified a 43-year-old man armed with a machete who allegedly stabbed a police dog and broke a patrol vehicle's window in Oceanside.About 5 p.m. Tuesday, an officer was inside a vehicle, stopped at a traffic light on College Boulevard and Plaza Drive, when he saw the suspect, Noomane Trabelsi, across the street yelling at him, according to Oceanside Police Department Public Information Officer Tom Bussey.The suspect allegedly approached the vehicle swinging a machete and broke the driver's side window, Bussey said.The officer suffered minor injuries and called for assistance. A perimeter was established, and the suspect was seen near the Mossy Nissan dealership, at 3535 College Blvd., and officers tried to make contact with him, according to Bussey.Trabelsi went into a nearby ravine, prompting officers to deploy a police dog, according to Bussey.Trabelsi allegedly stabbed the dog, named Chico, in his head and then stabbed himself multiple times in his stomach, Bussey said. Chico was taken to a veterinarian and is expected to recover, according to Bussey.Officers, assisted by a San Diego County Sheriff's Department helicopter, searched for Trabelsi for two hours in tough terrain, according to Bussey.Trabelsi was located, arrested and taken to Scripps La Jolla to be treated for the self-inflicted injuries, Bussey said. 1381

On Tuesday night, thousands of fans will fill Ford Field in Detroit to see Taylor Swift perform. In the crowd, will be 15-year-old Tiffany Kleinschmidt of Waterford.The teen, who's a huge T Swift fan, suffered a traumatic brain injury last April after going into cardiac arrest at school. She's been in the hospital for months learning how to walk and talk again, but on Tuesday, she'll leave for the first time since the tragedy. She'll be going to the Taylor Swift concert. Taylor's music has been instrumental in Tiffany's healing. She decided to donate them to someone who could really use a night out.So, Laken contacted Children's Hospital of Michigan. OLATHE, Kan. — Court documents released Monday say a Johnson County, Kansas mom was nearly successful in killing at least two of her children last month.Therese Roever faces three counts of attempted capital murder for allegedly drugging her three children on February 19.It wasn’t until her ex-husband arrived to pick up the kids that anyone knew something was wrong.Court documents indicate the ex-husband tried to get into the house for more than an hour but Roever did not open the door or answer the phone.When Roever finally let the ex-husband inside, he found his ex-wife “drugged and groggy.”First responders arrived to find the couple’s 7-year-old daughter on a bed not responding. Their 5-year-old initially got up from the bed but then stumbled to the ground. A third child, 7, was found in the bathroom crying.While the kids were en-route to the hospital, paramedics used Narcan – a drug commonly used to reduce the symptoms of opioid overdose – on two of the kids.Doctors told investigators that had police not arrived when they did, two of the children would have died.Roever remains in the Johnson County Jail on a million bond. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- The beach may still be Oceanside’s biggest draw, but increasingly, people are coming for the beer.With seven breweries, several tap rooms and San Diego’s first meadery, Oceanside is earning a reputation among those looking for a pint.“They’ve brought a really interesting liveliness to Oceanside,” said the city’s economic development manager, Michelle Geller.Geller estimates Oceanside’s beer businesses have created 50 to 75 jobs, along with other economic benefits.LIFE IN OCEANSIDE:From 'Ocean Side' to region's third-largest city5 places to spend the day in Oceanside“It tends to give way to businesses that want to have their offices in the downtown,” she said. “Employees just like that creative culture of craft beer.”The oldest active brewery in Oceanside is Breakwater Brewing, the first to take up residence along Coast Highway. It opened in 2008 during the teeth of the Great Recession, when downtown had a different feel.“Lot of crime,” said co-owner Shannon Sager. “We had people grabbing money. Our tip jar had like in it once, people ran in, grabbed it and ran out. We started gluing it to the table. That doesn’t happen anymore.”As the downtown landscape shifted, more breweries opened nearby.“The next thing you know, it started taking off,” Sager said.Bagby Beer Company, Belching Beaver, Legacy Brewing, Northern Pine Brewing, Oceanside Brewing Company and Golden Coast Mead now round out Oceanside’s craft scene.
