SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds gathered outside Fire Station 21 in Pacific Beach Tuesday evening to remember a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department firefighter killed in a motorcycle crash over the weekend.Ryan Ferrara, 39, was riding on the back of the motorcycle as a passenger when it crashed into a parked vehicle. It happened July 18 at the 13000 block of Piping Rock Lane in the Lakeside area.The driver of the motorcycle was hospitalized; he has not yet been identified. Authorities say neither the driver nor Ferrara were wearing helmets.RELATED: San Diego firefighter killed in Lakeside-area motorcycle crashThe crash is still under investigation, but the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office says alcohol or drugs may have been factors in the crash.Many who knew Ferrara were visibly distraught during Tuesday's remembrance ceremony. At sunset, the crowds moved to the boardwalk and sands. Many firefighters were there to show the family their support.Capt. Rich Marcello, who worked with Ferrara, says it's a Fire Station 21 tradition to go down to the beach and watch the sunset after every shift when possible."Every evening, we come out and watch the sunset and gather round each other and kind of hang out with each other, which is why we're here with the family today," he said.Before he was a firefighter, Ferrara was a lifeguard. The county may something a little extra for your wallet.The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office says they currently have 3,000 in unclaimed county refunds waiting to be reunited with their rightful owners.About 1,928 refunds sit on the countywide unclaimed money and unclaimed property tax refunds lists, according to the office. If the county thinks you're owed a refund, you may receive a postcard in the mail, according to San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister.“Most of the time, we’re collecting money from San Diegans,” said McAllister. “We love summer when we can give it back and put a little extra vacation cash in people’s pockets. I feel like Robin Hood.”Over the last five years, the office says it has refunded nearly 0,000 to residents.According to the county, the smallest refund amount available is and the largest refund amount is ,333.79, owed to the heirs of Mary Stone. "In the past, sadly, most refunds were never claimed," McAllister said. "So we’re trying a new strategy to let people know about this money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Following a four-month-long sting known as "Operation Red Beard," dozens of people have been arrested for selling drugs in East Village.Thirty-two arrests have been made so far. The District Attorney’s office announced the arrests were made in multiple locations within a one-mile radius. The largest bust locations were on K Street and 17th Street, each with at least nine arrests. The D.A.’s office and the San Diego Police Department joined forces in April to launch Operation Red Beard after residents complained of the among of drugs being sold in the area. Those drugs included methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, oxycodone, and Xanax. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Drivers who travel from northbound Interstate 5 to the Coronado Bridge will be detoured through Barrio Logan this week due to construction.Caltrans crews will shut down the north I-5 connector to SR-75 Monday through Thursday nights to install a debris fence above Chicano Park.Detour signs will guide drivers to exit at Cesar Chavez Parkway, then left to the on-ramp at SR-75 at Logan Avenue.The closure will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.Check TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. 508
