SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Padres made another trade on Monday, this time acquiring relief pitcher Taylor Williams from the Seattle Mariners just before Major League Baseball’s trade deadline.MLB.com Padres beat writer AJ Cassavell confirmed the Friars picked up the 29-year-old Williams in exchange for a player to be named later.Williams has a 1-1 record on the season with a 5.93 ERA and six saves.Ironically, Williams was the losing pitcher in the Padres’ wild comeback win over the Mariners on Aug. 27. In that game, with Seattle up 7-3, Williams got two quick outs before giving up four runs to blow the save. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousa---nds of businesses across California have permanently closed their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.According to Yelp's local economic report, restaurants and retail continue to struggle, and total closures nationwide have started to increase.The September report noted more than 19,000 businesses in California have permanently closed."The states with the most closures are home to the hardest-hit metros: Las Vegas in Nevada, Honolulu in Hawaii, and several of the largest California urban areas all are among the metro areas with the highest total closure and permanent closure rates (San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles and others), with roughly 20 businesses per thousand temporarily or permanently closing their doors since March 1," the report stated.The report said professional services and solo proprietors generally have been able to weather the storm and maintain a relatively low fraction of closures since March 1."Small business, the one thing you know for sure is you're going to have to adapt and figure out real quick what you have to do no matter what comes your way," said AJ Williams, of Hammonds Gourmet Ice Cream.Williams said he remembers the exact moment he learned about the initial stay at home order."I saw the news flash come across and immediately told my entire staff, hey, in the middle of a shift, shut the doors and close things down," he said.Williams said he kept Hammonds Gourmet Ice Cream closed for the first few weeks of the stay at home order. As an essential business, he was able to slowly reopen with new restrictions and safety measures in place.Through a steady stream of customers and some cost-cutting measures, Williams has been able to keep the lights on."If you compare it to when COVID-19 started, we're doing great," he said. "If you compare it to where we were last year, not so great."Williams considers himself lucky. Not every business has survived."We've lost permanently now 13 percent of our businesses," said Jason Wells, executive director of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce. "That's about 97 businesses."Wells explained that COVID is having an impact on the border businesses, but in that region, it’s the border restrictions put in place because of COVID that's keeping tens of thousands of shoppers from doing business.In March, the United States restricted all non-essential travel across its borders. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), "non-essential" travel includes travel that is considered tourism or recreational in nature.On Twitter, acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf released a statement saying, "We continue to work with our Canadian and Mexican partners to slow the spread of COVID-19. Accordingly, we have agreed to extend the limitation of non-essential travel at our shared land ports of entry through October 21.”Wells said if the government extends the restrictions, it could have dire consequences."If those restrictions aren't lifted in October, more than half of our 786 businesses are at risk just because of the sheer dependence we have on the holiday season and the Mexican shopper," Wells said.Businesses OpeningWhile some businesses are struggling to not close, there are others in California opening for the first time."When this thing happened (Coronavirus), I decided it was time to go out on my own and go for it," said Colin Duncan, owner of Colin's Barber Shop. "Take all my savings and just see what happens."Duncan said he got the keys to what's now Colin's Barber Shop in San Luis Obispo at the end of March. He opened in June and hasn't looked back."It’s been a roller coaster that's for sure," Duncan said. "It's pretty scary, but we've managed to make it work".The city of San Luis Obispo said after reviewing the entire list of business licenses from March to the present, there have been 108 new businesses, 67 of those are commercial, and 41 operate from home. 3935

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The target at the center of a murder for hire plot is suing his former business partner and his associates. Ninus Malan says, he suffers from severe emotional distress as a result of his business partners actions."I wish this would go away, but I wake up every morning, and it's there," Malan told 10News. In November, federal authorities charged Salam Razuki, Sylvia Gonzales and Elizabeth Juarez with offenses related to a conspiracy to kidnap and kill a business associate over a dispute involving real estate investment properties, most of which were leased to marijuana dispensaries.   According to a complaint filed on November 2018, in October of that year, Salam Razuki and Sylvia Gonzales met with a Confidential Human Source and asked the source to arrange to kill Malan. The complaint says according to Razuki and Gonzales, they had invested in multiple properties and business ventures together and were not involved in a civil dispute over their assets. The complaint alleges, "Razuki and Gonzales told CHS1 (confidential human source) that they wanted CHS1 to 'Shoot him in the face,' 'to take him to Mexico and have him whacked,' 'or kill him in some other way.'"Federal authorities say Elizabeth Juarez later joined Razuki and Gonzales, and the three talked about having Malan killed.The complaint says the confidential human source, Gonzales, and Juarez discussed a cost of ,000 for "the job." Federal authorities say during one of the meetings, Gonzales went to the Goldn Bloom Dispensary and returned with ,000 cash. "After the meeting, CHS1 provided agents with ,000 case provided by Gonzales," the complaint says.Federal authorities say, "according to the complaint, on November 15, 2018, the source met with Razuki and stated, 'I took care of it.'" Razuki replied, "So he will take care of it, or it's done?" The source replied, "Done." Malan told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin that he's now forced to live his life day by day afraid for his family's safety. "My nine-year-old daughter had to see this on the news, and she knows all about it," Malan said. "I don't know how to explain it to her." Malan is suing Razuki, Gonzales, Juarez and a handful of businesses. The lawsuit alleges, interference with exercise of civil rights, unfair competition, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence. The lawsuit says the "defendants committed the acts herein despicably, maliciously, and oppressively, with the wrongful intention of injuring plaintiff, from an improper and evil motive amounting to malice, and with the conscious disregard of the rights and safety of Plaintiff and others." "Mr. Malan and Mr. Razuki were involved in a number of businesses together," said Malan's attorney John Gomez of Gomez Trial Attorneys. "That relationship kind of fell apart, so litigation commenced." Gomez says Razuki brought a civil suit against Malan and Malan filed a lawsuit against Razuki. "That's a big litigation involving a lot of money," Gomez said. "Mr. Razuki apparently thought it was ok to put a hit on Mr. Malan to eliminate him from the litigation." Gomez told 10News all the businesses and entities named in the lawsuit are affiliated with Razuki and participants in the litigation. "When he puts a hit on Mr. Malan to advance the litigation he's doing it on behalf of all of these businesses and people," Gomez said. With a criminal case underway, Malan was limited in what he was willing to discuss. He thanked the FBI, his family and told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin he'll always be looking over his shoulder. "In the courts is where I'm seeking justice, not only for me but for my family who were terrorized by these people," Malan said. Criminal defense attorneys for Gonzales and Juarez have not yet responded to 10News requests for comment.Razuki's attorneys told 10News they have no comment. 4194

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is warning San Diegans about a mysterious and possibly deadly counterfeit drug being traded on the streets. The department says they believe the pills have caused four overdose deaths in San Diego County over the last 36 hours. The deaths happened in Valley Center, Santee, Poway and Lakeside. “It’s being traded and sold on the streets with the promise of a painkiller high, but no one really knows what exactly is in the drug which makes it so dangerous,” the department said. Authorities say the pills are blue with one side marked by an "M" while the other side is stamped with a "30." The department says the pills are often called "M-30s" or "blues."While the department doesn't know exactly what's in the pills, investigators say these type of pills often contain fentanyl or carfentanil.Anyone with information is urged to call the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The suspect of a Spring Valley murder nearly seven years has been arrested in New York.Waverly James, 49, was arrested in New York for the Dec. 6, 2012, murder of 52-year-old Stanford Roy Johnson, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.Deputies say they were called to a home in the 9000 block of Lemon St. on Dec. 6, 2012, for a welfare check. Deputies found the rear door open and discovered Johnson dead from multiple stab wounds.James was identified as a suspect and arrested on a warrant in New York. He will be extradited to San Diego and booked for murder. 599
