It also uses augmented reality to track how moles, freckles and skin change over time.Doctors say apps like these can actually help during this pandemic.“That has led to a significant decrease in visits for screening such as colon cancer, lung cancer, and skin cancer is of course one of those that actually is affected by the pandemic,” said Dr. Arturo Loaiza-Bonilla with Cancer Treatment Centers of America.When doctors and patients are dealing with cancer, time is of the essence.Tools like this app don't replace doctor's visits, but they can help with early detection.“One month of losing a cancer that was just newly found is almost a 10% increase in mortality, so if the screening comes a year later when the cancer is already starting, then we are in a pretty dark situation,” said Loaiza-Bonilla.Doctors at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America say that while the apps shouldn't replace a full physical assessment, they can be used as an additional tool to track new moles and see how certain things develop.If you are at a higher risk for skin cancer and want to use one of these apps, it's important that you do so under doctor supervision.These apps are still not considered a medical device.Doctors hope these tools can eventually be paired with medical records, so patients can be empowered by knowing more about their own health. 1537

TIJUANA, Mexico. (KGTV and AP) -- At least three people were killed in wind-driven fires that scorched a large swath of Baja, California last week, the Associated Press reports. Last Friday, Mexico’s civil defense told AP the fires forced more than 1,600 people to evacuate their homes. The fires burned near Tecate, Tijuana and between the coastal towns of Rosarito and Ensenada. The fire near Tecate burned more than 35,000 acres, according to AP. Schools were also shut down in Tijuana, Tecate and Rosarito due to heavy smoke in the area. Mexican officials told CNN the fire tore through 125 homes, 30 of which are in the city of Tijuana. Local support to help those affected by the fires is growing in San Diego, especially from the local Kumeyaay population. Anna Gloria Rodriguez showed a growing pile of donations in her office Wednesday. “Furniture, some blankets and pillows,” Rodriguez said. Rodriguez is part of the Kumeyaay Nation and is heading up the effort to collect donations to bring to her family across the border. “The Kumeyaay Nation has people on both sides of the border. We have family in all the communities,” she continued. “The whole big mountains already burned but still one part on fire, so there was a lot of people in the community trying to put dirt and water.”While her family and many others are safe, the fires left some without electricity or easy access to clean water or food. Three explosions that occurred when people picked up packages outside their residences appear to be connected, Austin, Texas, city Police Chief Brian Manley said Monday at a news conference.A Monday morning explosion killed a 17-year-old African-American boy and also injured a woman at the house. A second Monday explosion left a 75-year-old woman in critical condition, the chief said. A March 2 blast killed a 39-year-old African-American man.All the explosions occurred when people who lived at the residences went outside and picked up packages, Manley said. The packages were not delivered by the postal service or delivery services like UPS or FedEx, he said."The evidence makes us believe these incidents are related," he said, saying investigators have not come up with a motive or whether anybody has claimed responsibility. It's not known if the victims knew each other or if they were targeted, he said.Police also have not decided if these are hate crimes, but said that's a real possibility of the victims' races."We're not ruling anything out at this point," he said. "We're willing to investigate any avenue."Authorities have only identified one victim. Anthony Stephan House, 39, died from injuries in the March 2 explosion, police said. The elderly woman injured today sustained life-threatening injuries, the chief said.In describing the Monday morning blast that killed the teenager, the chief said: "What we understand at this point is that early this morning is that one of the residents went out front and there was a package on the front doorstep. They brought that package inside the residence and as they opened that package, both victims were in the kitchen, and the package exploded, causing the injuries that resulted in the young man's death and the injuries to the adult female."The female's injuries were not life-threatening, he said.Manley strongly urged residents to be on the lookout for suspicious packages and to alert authorities immediately."If you've received a package that has been left on your doorstep or left in your yard or left on your driveway that you were not expecting or that was not from someone you know, then give us a call," Manley said.Likewise, he urged the thousands of visitors in town -- many at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival -- to be cautious. "Enjoy yourself, have a good time," he said. "But be aware, be suspicious."The festival began Friday in downtown Austin and ends Tuesday. The explosions are not in the immediate vicinity of the festival.Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton urged all Texans to be cautious. "With three reported explosions in the Austin area, I want to urge all Texans to report any suspicious or unexpected packages arriving by mail to local law enforcement authorities.
