Rooted in its western heritage, Arizona has long been a state focused on freedoms.“Historically it was a lot of ranchers and rural,” said Valerie Hoekstra, Politics and Global Studies Professor at Arizona State University. “You’re not required to wear a helmet on a motorcycle, you can sit in the back of a pickup truck. All these things that are part of the individualistic tradition that sometimes overlap with liberal values, and sometimes just that western culture.”But things are shifting in the Grand Canyon State.“I don’t think we can count it as a red state anymore, it’s not a blue state for sure either,” Hoekstra said.A Democratic presidential candidate has not carried the state of Arizona since Bill Clinton did so 24 years ago in 1996. However, Tuesday night’s election results show Arizona’s Republican preference is shifting. There’s heavy support this election for both Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, and U.S. Senate Candidate Mark Kelly. Both gaining major support in areas like Phoenix and Tucson, two of Arizona’s most populous areas.Several factors may be contributing to the political shift. Over the years, Arizona has become a hot spot for transplants from across the country, especially California, a largely Democratic-leaning state. About 60,000 Californians moved to Arizona in 3017 alone, according to Census Bureau data. Then there’s also Arizona’s growing Hispanic population.“The increasing Latino Latina population in this state that happens to be Democratic leaning and identify as Democrats,” Hoekstra said. And then there’s the young people.“The universities are huge and growing and the students seem to be more active.”That’s a change from the new residents Arizona is often known for attracting. “It was a haven for retirees and snowbirds,” she said. “People who don't really want to pay taxes and moved here for those reasons.”State voter registration statistics show a record number of registered voters in Arizona as of November 2020, with just over 4.2 million. For comparison, the state’s population is closing in on 7.3 million people as of last year. Of the registered voters, 35.24% registered as Republican and 32.20% as Democrat. Getting those voters to turn out, is another battle.“Just the candidates themselves mobilize people one way or another, or demobilize some people maybe, too,” Hoekstra explained. She said just because Arizona swung blue this time, doesn’t mean it will in the future as the demographics of the state continue to change. “It’s up for grabs.” 2540

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) — Building on his recently announced initiative to move California away from gas-powered vehicles, Gov. Gavin Newsom says California will dedicate 30% of its land to conservation by 2030.Newsom said Wednesday that under an executive order, the state will direct agencies to store carbon in the state's natural and working lands and remove it from the atmosphere to preserve more than 30% of the state's land and coastal waters by 2030.The move is also meant to combat species and ecosystem loss, according to the governor's order."Once again, California is taking on the mantle of global climate leadership and advancing bold strategies to fight climate change," a statement from Newsom read. "The science is clear that, in our existential fight against climate change, we must build on our historic efforts in energy and emissions and focus on our lands as well. California’s beautiful natural and working lands are an important tool to help slow and avert catastrophic climate change, and today’s executive order provides important new tools to take on this existential threat."To hit climate goals, agencies will be directed to practice:Healthy soils management, including planting cover crops, hedgerows, and compost applications,Wetlands restoration to protect coastal areas,Active forest management to reduce risk and restore forest health,Boost green infrastructure in urban areas like trees and parksLast month, Newsom announced California will phase out all gasoline-powered cars by 2035 in an effort to reduce the state's emissions. The executive order will require all new car and passenger trucks sold in the state to be zero-emission vehicles, but it will not make it illegal for Californians to own gas-powered vehicles or resell them as used cars. 1796

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Google says Android phones will be used to sense earthquakes around the world and may one day be able to provide global warnings, with the first mass alert system unveiled Tuesday in California. The Android operating system maker says it's using California's network of seismometers to trigger phone alerts. “This announcement means that California’s world-class earthquake early warning system will be a standard function on every Android phone — giving millions precious seconds to drop, cover and hold on when the big one hits,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement.Android users who have enabled location services and are near a quake of magnitude 4.5 or greater will receive a full-screen earthquake warning, according to ABC News. Authorities say that could give people nearby precious seconds to seek safety. No app is needed. Google also announced that Android phones around the world will begin acting as mini-seismometers to sense tremors. Beginning next year, that could lead to early warning alerts for users near quakes around the world. 1085

RICHMOND, Va. — A Virginia judge has dissolved one injunction but imposed another preventing Virginia's governor from removing an enormous statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The new 90-day injunction bars the statue’s removal from Richmond's Monument Avenue while claims in a lawsuit filed by a group of property owners are litigated. Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring has moved to dismiss the case, but the judge says the property owners have standing and could succeed on at least one of their claims. Gov. Ralph Northam announced plans to remove the statue in early June, citing the pain felt across the country about the death of George Floyd. 667

Roman Catholics account for a bit more than 20% of the U.S. population. Yet they are on track to hold six of the Supreme Court’s nine seats now that President Donald Trump is expected to nominate Amy Coney Barrett to fill a vacancy. It’s a striking development given that the high court, for most of its history, was almost entirely populated by white male Protestants. Catholic academics and political analysts offer several explanations for the turnaround. They cite Catholics’ educational traditions, their interest in the law, and – in the case of Catholic conservatives – an outlook that has appealed to recent Republican presidents. Barrett, a favorite of conservative activists for her views on abortion and other issues, will likely be an ideological opposite of liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Jewish justice whose recent death created the vacancy.Margaret McGuinness, a professor of religion at La Salle University in Philadelphia, noted that Sonia Sotomayor is the only current Catholic justice appointed by a Democrat. The others — Chief Justice John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh and likely Barrett – were appointed by Republicans. 1187
