Broadway star Nick Cordero died months after contracting coronavirus, his wife said Sunday."God has another angel in heaven now," Amanda Kloots wrote on Instagram. "My darling husband passed away this morning. He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth."Cordero's right leg was amputated and he was in a coma because of coronavirus."I am in disbelief and hurting everywhere," Kloots wrote. "My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him. Nick was such a bright light. He was everyone’s friend, loved to listen, help and especially talk. Handmade tortillas and rice and beans are all ingredients in some of Silvia Hernandez' most beloved meals. “I'm from Mexico City, so I love tacos,” she says. “My favorite dish is the carne asada taco.” Hernandez is an immigrant and came to the U.S. a few years ago. She knew how to cook, but she wanted to turn her passion and skill and wanted to turn her traditional Mexican cooking into a business. But she had no idea where to even start.“I didn't know anything about, you know, [the] process, license, requirements,” she says. “I did not even know where offices are located.” That’s where Slavitca Park came in. Park created the Comal Heritage Food Incubator as an outreach program. It’s for low-income immigrants, who needed help to start food businesses based around the cuisines of their homelands. “Everything from understanding, how do you build a menu, how do you source food, how do you price it, what kind of licensing, permitting, you need financing,” Park explains of the education the program provides. The incubator, which acts as a learning kitchen of sorts, is packed five days a week. Here, the women create their own dishes and train with professional chefs. The program now includes refugees from Syria and Ethiopia. “I always say food is one of those things that absolutely transcends everything,” Park says. “I just really think that food is the vehicle that builds the community. Breaking breads. That's what it’s all about.” Hernandez completed the program and now has her own catering company. But she says she just can’t stay away from the program. She still works a couple shifts a week in the incubator. Park loves hearing the stories of those who complete the program."What comes out of it, it’s nothing short of pure magic,” she says. 1783

BRYAN, Texas – You’ve heard the saying “everything’s bigger in Texas.” Well, so is the Lone Star State’s problem with wild hogs. The invasive species has been wreaking havoc on the ecology and causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage each year. In recent months, they’ve even become deadly. Some wildlife removal experts are using heavy ammunition and an aerial advantage to contend with the wild animals. “Heli-Bacon flies around in helicopters and we kill feral pigs with machine guns,” explained Heli-Bacon CEO Chris Britt. Britt admits it’s an unfair advantage, but he says that’s the point. “In this particular case though, the purpose is not to be fair. A group surrounded and attacked an NYPD officer in Lower Manhattan, police said Thursday. Pictures released from the May 28 attack at Albany Street and West Avenue show two men accused in the attack. One man pushed the 37-year-old officer to the ground and punched him in the face. The second man repeatedly struck the officer with his skateboard. Police said the officer was treated for a bloody nose along with bruising and pain to the head and shoulder. A Southern Arizona school district is taking a creative approach to better sanitize the classroom daily.Santa Cruz Valley School District bought six Power Breezers that will disinfect a classroom in 20 minutes.Superintendent David Verdugo said the school district did this as a cost effective way to provide extra safety and security to students and staff.He said it will be used after school to clean empty classrooms, hallways and even school buses.Each unit costs about 4,500 dollars."This is an opportunity for them to look at a way to sanitize a room in a short period of time and utilize their staff but also be cost effective," Superintendent Verdugo said.He said the district is also requiring all students to wear masks, have their temperature checked, and social distance in and out of the classroom.Every classroom will only be at 50% capacity, meaning 15 desks per room, he said. In order to do this, the district came up with a hybrid approach to learning."There will be a group A and a group B," Superintendent Verdugo said. "The group A students will be on Monday. They will come to school, have their direct instruction and then they will be at home the next day. Then, group B will come to school, but they will still have some interaction that day with assignments and virtual opportunities."He said the district is planning on starting remote learning on August 3 and then the hybrid approach will being on August 31.
