SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Homeless people in San Diego woke up Tuesday morning to find San Diego Police officers going street by street, offering resources.  Police officers lined the streets of the East Village. They were going street by street approaching the homeless in their tents. At one point there were at least eight patrol cars on one block.  SDPD says their efforts are a part of their ongoing outreach to let the homeless know about the resources available to them in hopes of ending the cycle of homelessness.  Most of the homeless received warnings about their property blocking the street or other violations. A few were detained for previous violations. One person was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant. Two people were transported to county mental health. Officers were also letting people know about the new bathrooms installed by the city in hopes of stopping the spread of Hepatitis A.  965

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An appeals court has rejected a former Stanford University swimmer's bid for a new trial and upheld his sexual assault conviction.The three-judge panel of the 6th District Court of Appeal ruled unanimously Wednesday that Brock Turner received a fair trial.A San Jose jury in 2016 convicted Turner of sexually assaulting a young, intoxicated woman outside an on-campus fraternity party.Judge Aaron Persky rejected a prosecutor's demand for a lengthy prison term and instead sentenced him to six months in jail. Turner appealed the conviction, arguing he didn't receive a fair trial.Persky's sentence sparked nationwide outrage by those who felt it too lenient. San Diego (KGTV) One plate at a time, a San Diego couple is hoping to help those living on the streets with no food to eat. They’re using their new food trailer to do just that. ‘#FeedingEveryone’ is the goal for the Duwara Consciousness Foundation. “Our foundation is about serving anyone and everyone,” says co-founder Harisimran Khalsa. Through donations from the community, couple Davinder and Harisimran were able to purchase a food trailer to help feed the homeless. The couple says they’re committed to helping others. They left their jobs, sold businesses, and are now living a simpler lifestyle. “When your passionate about something, you have to live the life of and see how it is,” says Davinder Singh. “We decided that we would give up the house that we were living in.”The 16-foot trailer is equipped with a griller, 2 part stove, refrigeration and prep space. Every food item made is plant-based. Donations and volunteers strictly power the organization. They are serving at least two locations every week. They hope to grow the non-profit and eventually purchase a shower bus for the homeless.  The organization has partnered with the Jewish Family Service to feed the homeless on Thursdays and Fill-A-Belly to serve those in need on Tuesdays. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- COVID-19 is causing some changes for voters in San Diego county. Your usual polling location may not be active for the November elections.“Because of the pandemic, it has created a level of uncertainty in our universe,” says Registrar of Voter Michael Vu.Vu says to ensure physical distancing the county has consolidated the 1,600 small voting precincts into 235 super poll locations for voters to cast their ballots.“We just want to make sure everyone does it in a safe and healthy way.”Vu says they will be expanding the technology at each site with the ballot marking machines introduced during the primary elections back in March.“There will be, on average, 7 of those ballot marking devices per super polls location,” says Vu. “But we will also be having a number of voting booths because we will have pre-printed paper ballots for voters.”To help with social distancing and the influx of voters, there will be seven different check-in stations at each site to move people along.On Thursday, the Registrar of Voters office will be sending out sample ballots and voter information pamphlets. Those packets will contain each voter’s designated super poll location.The super poll locations will be open for voting starting October 31st.Michael Vu says the mail-in ballots will be sent out on October 5th. 1332

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV)— With precipitation numbers up, participation numbers were down for outdoor events around San Diego County. But many who chose to endure the rain said it was worth the extra splash. It’s a rare sight in the heart of San Diego: kids sledding on a giant snowy hill at Montgomery Waller Park. For the Murillo family, it’s an annual tradition. “We go to see Santa Claus, we go to the little stores that they have there, and we come to sled down for a little bit,” mother Diane Murillo said. She and her children were bundled up while having fun at San Diego Snow Day. But this year, Murillo noticed that the crowds were much smaller. “It’s a lot smaller. It’s empty today. There’s actually parking,” Murillo laughed. She said the steady rain discouraged many folks from showing up. The City of San Diego even had to cancel Santa Claus’ helicopter fly-over of the park, due to inclement weather. Murillo also noticed that the snowy hill was very sludgy, and only about half its normal length. But by the looks of the children, the event was still worth it. Meanwhile, in the South Bay, there was a tent full of Christmas-themed games. From Candy Cane trees, ring tosses, to face paint, families enjoyed the free entertainment at the Chula Vista Children’s Faire. “It helps, because that way, we’re not getting wet while they are getting their stuff done and doing the activities. So it’s nice,” mother Felice Navarro said. Her neighbor invited her and her children to join them at the fair this year. The kids also had an option to splash around if they wanted, as they ran through an obstacle course as Chula Vista junior firefighters. Fun was not just reserved for children. Up at Liberty Station, hundreds of people waited in line to join the San Diego BBQ and Beer festival. 25-year-old Victoria Ransom was not going to let the rain dampen her birthday celebration. “We wanted to be able to double fist if that was a possibility. Hands-free rain protection,” Ransom joked. She said she bought eight rainbow-colored umbrella hats online, the moment she found out about the weather. “You drink, you eat, it’s great,” Ransom said. “I got a nice pour because it’s my birthday, and we’re having a great time.” 2243
