SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New statistics from San Diego County show the zip codes closest to the border have the most cases of COVID-19.According to the County's Coronavirus Heat Map, the zip codes 92154, 91911, 91910, 92113, and 91950 are the five highest for positive tests. Those zip codes make up the area of the County stretching along the harbor from San Ysidro through Chula Vista and National City.Those five zip codes account for more than 21% of all the positive tests in the County.The zip code that makes up most of San Ysidro, 92173, has the highest number of cases per capita in the County. In that zip code, one out of every 14 people has tested positive."We don't want these numbers to continue going up," says Adriana Bearse, the Research Program Manager for San Ysidro Health."When cases rise, it's not only people's health that gets affected. It's also other aspects of their lives like their job situation and their family situation."Bearse says the Pandemic is taking a disproportionate toll on the South Bay's minority community, especially among Latinx and Hispanic populations."These people are working essential jobs, people who may live in multi-Generational households, and also people who may not necessarily have as much access to other resources as other people in the community," she says.That includes less access to quality health care, food assistance, and financial assistance. The lack of help leads to more cases and more deaths.County records show 50% of San Diego's COVID-19-related deaths are among Hispanic or Latinx people, even though they make up just 34% of the County's total population.It's starting to take a toll on the South Bay healthcare system.At Sharp Chula Vista, the ICU in their brand new tower is 85% full. Of those patients, 38% are either COVID-positive or under investigation for COVID-related illness.Emergency Doctor Karrar Ali says it's overwhelming to think about what could happen in the next few months if cases keep rising."If the prediction is that this is going to be another second or third or fourth wave, I don't know if anyone's going to be prepared," he says.Healthcare workers in the South Bay are finding some solutions.Dr. Ali says sometimes it's as simple as reminding everyone to wear a mask and social distance.Bearse says San Ysidro Health has several outreach, discount, and educational programs available. One, "Testing With Care," offers a free telehealth visit to anyone who gets a COVID-19 test."That way, we can help walk the person through all these follow up items that are needed," she says. "We also make sure they can get follow-up care if they get a positive test."Healthcare workers also remind people in the South Bay to get a flu shot so local clinics and hospitals don't get overwhelmed by a double pandemic this fall. 2817

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Monday, community leaders demanded reforms following the release of body camera video showing San Diego police officers shooting a robbery suspect over the weekend.Monday, SDPD said he was in the ICU with life-threatening injuries.“I'm asking for SDPD to put an aggressive plan together to ensure that [with] any officer-involved shooting that within 48 hours to 72 hours a video from the body worn camera footage is released,” said Rev. Shane Harris with the People’s Alliance for Justice.Body camera video released on Sunday by SDPD shows the moment leading up to Saturday's shooting. Police said they were patrolling Downtown when they saw Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra in a red jumpsuit and recognized he was wanted for a robbery.From a street camera, Ibarra is seen reaching in his waistband and raising his arms toward officers. Under Ibarra, body camera footage shows what police said was a gun wrapped in a bandana.“They went in guns blazing and this is not the training that they have,” said community activist Tasha Williamson on Monday. She added that the police should have called for back-up before the confrontation.“People are saying he pointed the gun at the officer and we're simply saying how is that because the officer on video show him running sideways behind the suspect to a cover which was the vehicle,” she said.“They used verbal commands. They followed what their training is and they did an exceptional job,” said former SWAT commander and lethal force instructor Ray Shay when he spoke to ABC10 News on Sunday.“It's unfortunate the gentleman was shot but you'll see that the police officer- after shooting the suspect and getting him handcuffed- immediately calls for an ambulance and here are these two young officers doing CPR to try to save the life of the man who just tried to kill them,” he added.Activists are now urging SDPD to release videos of future shootings as quickly as they did they this time and to release videos before still images.“We want a whole perspective of a situation. Not a half-perspective,” added Harris.Harris also wants the DA’s Office to form a special unit to investigative police misconduct and officer shootings. He’s also calling for more officer training on racial and implicit bias.ABC10 News asked SDPD about the calls for reforms and we are waiting for a reply.SDPD is still investigating Saturday’s shooting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Protesters will be out in full force Saturday protesting the Crossroads of the West gun show in Del Mar.The protest is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. on Jimmy Durante Boulevard and Villa De La Valle.In years past, gun control advocates have targeted the show aiming to have the fairgrounds cancel the event.In 2016, a group of gun control advocates lobbied the Del Mar Fairgrounds board to end the shows saying the venue is inappropriate for a gun show."They glamorize the gun culture and help put more guns and more ammunition into the society. We don't believe the public facilities of the fairgrounds should be used for a purpose that is harmful to the public health and welfare," said Wayne Dernetz, of a group called Advocates for Gun Safety.Saturday’s gun show begins at 9 a.m. and will last until 5 p.m. 834

Zillow?recently released some statistics on what new home buyers can expect to see when getting into the San Diego market. Zillow found that, over the last five years, starter homes are actually increasing in value faster than other homes.The site says the quick appreciation is due to the demand for entry-level homes growing faster than supply.RELATED: Del Mar home sells for more than million in San Diego housing milestoneHome value appreciation among affordable homes is beneficial for people who own homes, but makes it tough for buyers trying to get into the market, according to Zillow.In the San Diego metro, there are 26 percent fewer starter homes to choose from than in 2017, where the typical entry-level home is worth 6,300.But there's good news for those lucky enough to land a home.
