The mayor of Compton, California, has told the Los Angeles Times that she is launching a pilot program with a local non-profit that will give 800 residents a "guaranteed income" over the next two years.Compton Mayor Aja Brown told the Times that a non-profit called the Compton Pledge would select 800 low-income residents and distribute a "guaranteed income" to them for the next two years.According to the Times, the participants will be selected from a "pre-verified" list of low-income families in the area. Over the span of two years, the Compton Pledge plans to provide the families with "at least a few hundred dollars on a recurring basis" without any strings attached. The program will also provide families with financial guidance and track their spending and well-being throughout the process. While the Compton Pledge has not said where it is getting its funding or how much participants would receive, The Los Angeles Times reports that the program hopes to include a "representative sample" of the city's racial makeup in its participants.Once considered a fringe concept, the idea of a "universal basic income" has gained traction among left-wing politicians in recent years. Such a policy would provide all Americans with a monthly stipend which recipients would be free to spend as they see fit. Businessman Andrew Yang ran for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination based on the idea. The concept gained further traction amid the COVID-19 pandemic when lawmakers agreed to provide most Americans with a ,200 check as the government shut down businesses to prevent the spread of the virus. While critics of a universal basic income claim such a policy would lead to high unemployment numbers and lead to spending on non-essential goods, some studies have shown that's not always the case. A similar program being conducted in Stockton, California, shows that recipients of basic income funds were mostly spent on food, clothes, and utility bills. 1975

The holiday season is upon us and that means Black Friday is less than a month away. While many retail experts are saying Black Friday is dead, we found that might not ring true for most shoppers.Janice Lieberman is a retail expert for Deal News and she says, “even though you will start seeing deals now they will get even lower.”Retailers are excited to get you in the holiday spirit and have you shopping in stores, not online.  Lieberman says, “they want those door busters. They want the fever. They want you to enjoy shopping, seeing other people and touching merchandise which is becoming so foreign.”However, this year a number of retailers including Home Depot, Ikea and Office Depot will remain closed on Nov. 24 and REI is even closing its stores on Black Friday. But, for the thousands of stores that will be keeping their doors open, Lieberman says, we need to get prepared before the big shopping day.“You need to get onto social media. You need to sign up with all the stores you enjoy shopping at because they will give their loyal members added deals or select deals.”If you are not about social media or even couponing, try signing up online at places like Deal News. You click on the items you want and they will send you an alert letting you know who has the lowest price.Lieberman says, “I really think if you can hold off now I know it’s not so easy but if you can hold off to Thanksgiving weekend, the day before, the day after, even Cyber Monday that’s when you’re going to see the lowest prices.”Thanksgiving Day will have the best deals for any item. Black Friday is the day to shop for electronics, toys and clothing. Cyber Monday you’ll find the lowest prices on computers, kitchenware and shoes. If you really want to save big on Black Friday, Lieberman suggests you create a list of all the items you plan to buy. If not, expect to pay more by simply purchasing items that you didn’t need. 1955

The plane behind Lion Air's crash off Indonesia was one of Boeing's newest and most advanced jets. It was just two months old and with 800 hours under its belt, so experts are baffled as to what exactly caused the 737 MAX 8 to crash. While no information has been released yet as to why the brand-new plane crashed into the sea 13 minutes after takeoff,?FlightRadar24 has published data that shows the plane behaving erratically during takeoff. When a plane would normally be ascending in the first few minutes of flight, the Lion Air jet experienced a 726-foot drop over 21 seconds.Aviation expert Philip Butterworth-Hayes told CNN that the data was unusual -- especially since takeoffs like this are typically controlled by the plane's automatic systems."This doesn't fit an automatic flight profile," Butterworth-Hayes said while studying the data. "Unless, the aircraft was trying to correct itself at the time for a number of reasons.""This shows an unusually unstable vertical flight profile," he added."Exactly at the same time as the speed increased there was an altitude dip, which meant that at that point there was quite some loss of control."The plane, which has only been in operation since August 15, was carrying 181 passengers as well as six cabin crew members and two pilots, bound for Pangkal Pinang on the Indonesian island of Bangka.Former US National Transportation Safety Board air crash investigator and CNN aviation analyst Peter Goelz told CNN the data clearly showed issues with both the speed and altitude of the plane."There is something obviously wrong in both the air speed and the altitude which would point to the flight control systems," he said. "These are fly-by-wire systems -- highly automated -- and pilots may not be able to troubleshoot failures in a timely manner." 1818
