DENVER, Colorado — A new study from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus highlights a startling aspect of the United States' opioid crisis: Many emergency room doctors don't realize just how often they're prescribing the addictive pain meds.CU researchers, along with researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, conducted a year-long study examining the prescription-writing behavior of more than 100 doctors at four different hospital emergency departments.The researchers first surveyed the doctors, asking how often they prescribed opioids compared to their peers, and found that 65 percent of the doctors actually wrote more opioid prescriptions than they thought they did.Out of a total of 75,203 prescriptions written over the course of the year, 15,124 of them — or slightly more than 20 percent — were for opioids.After researchers showed the doctors the actual data, the doctors started writing fewer opioid prescriptions."Everyone showed an overall decrease in prescribing opioids," said study author Sean Michael, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. "After seeing their real data, the people with inaccurate self-perceptions, on average, had 2.1 fewer opioid prescriptions per 100 patients six months later and 2.2 percent fewer prescriptions per 100 patients at 12 months."The study only highlights a small piece of the opioid prescription problem, the authors state, since emergency room doctors hand out just 5 to 10 percent of all opioid prescriptions."Despite making progress on the opioid epidemic, we can't assume providers are behaving optimally and have all the information they need to do what we are asking of them," Michael said. Death row inmate, 61-year-old David Earl Miller will be executed tonight by the electric chair at 7 p.m. tonight.Miller is the second Tennessee death row inmate in just over a month to choose to die by the electric chair. His attorneys argued that the state's lethal injection method causes a prolonged and torturous death.Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam declined Miller's clemency application, in which his attorney claimed Miller had been suffering from “severe mental illness” at the time of his crime, and that his mental state places him “far outside that group of offenders who are the worst and for whom the death penalty is reserved.”Miller is also asking the U.S. Supreme Court to issue a stay of execution to address two separate legal issues. The high court declined to issue stays for either of the two other inmates executed this year.The inmate was moved to death watch Wednesday and served his requested last meal Thursday afternoon.Miller was convicted of killing 23-year-old Lee Standifer, who was mentally disabled, in Knoxville in 1981.A man Miller was living with found Standifer's body naked in the yard with her hands bound and roped wrapped around her body. Democrats are pressing Equifax to offer more protection to millions of Americans after last year's massive data breach.In a letter Tuesday, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee asked Equifax's interim CEO to offer customers at least three years of credit monitoring and identify theft protection. Equifax has offered one year of those services for free."Given the sensitive nature of the personal information that was stolen — and the ability of criminals to store and use that information for years to come — we believe that the millions of U.S. consumers whose personal information was compromised in the Equifax data breach should receive the most robust form of credit protection and identify theft services available," Democrats wrote in a letter to interim CEO Paulino do Rego Barros.The letter was signed by Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland and the other 16 Democrats on the committee.Equifax spokeswoman Meredith Griffanti said in a statement to CNN that the credit reporting agency is "engaged with both federal and state regulators and are having ongoing discussions about appropriate remediation for consumers."The Republican chairman of the committee, Representative Trey Gowdy, could not be reached for comment.Related: The Equifax hack could be worse than we thoughtThe personal information of as many as 145 million Americans was exposed in the hack, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and home addresses.After the data breach was revealed in September, Equifax also offered free credit freezes through June 30 and free credit locks for life. (KGTV) — While concerts are on hiatus during the pandemic, the Del Mar Fairgrounds will host several "concerts in your car" this fall.Acts including Dirty Heads, DJ Snoopadelic (aka Snoop Dogg), Slightly Stoopid, The Beach Boys, and more will take the stage at Del Mar between Sept. 25 and Nov. 1.
