SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — North Park residents will celebrate this holiday season with an annual tradition intact — at least for one more year.For 56 years, the Toyland Parade has delighted crowds in North Park during the holiday season. But much like a parade balloon, financial troubles have loomed over organizers.Last year, the parade was briefly canceled after former-host Victoria House Corporation said it had lost support from sponsors. That donation and monetary support from the community helped 2018's parade continue as planned. NPMS has since taken the parade over, as well.But the parade is once again in trouble. Angela Landsberg, executive director with North Park Main Street, says support from the local Lions Club has saved 2019's parade, but 2020 is a different story."Our presenting sponsor North Park Lions Club have ensured that it's going to go off this year, but if we don't raise enough money this year to get us carried through our planning for next year, because these things take a long time to plan, then this will be the final year," Landsberg told 10News. The organization is asking for the community to once again step in to make sure the parade steps off on University Avenue next year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One young man was named the newest recruit of the San Diego Police Department Wednesday.SDPD's newest officer, five-year-old Liam, was sworn in by Chief David Nisleit as part of a ceremony hosted by the department and Make-A-Wish San Diego.Liam, who was born with a congenital heart defect, began his first day on the beat soon after his ceremony. He and his partner received a call to help capture a bank robber. Bank of America also partnered with Make-A-Wish to offer up a location for a bank robbery and arrest scene, where the two cops took in the suspect.Liam and his partner then returned to police headquarters to interview the suspect.The Make-A-Wish event was held just one day before the department celebrates its 130th anniversary. 770

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Raids are expected to begin across the country this weekend targeting undocumented immigrants with deportation orders.According to the New York Times, ICE agents will target some 2,000 who have deportation orders in at least ten cities. The raids will include "collateral" deportations, meaning undocumented immigrants at the scene may also be detained."There is definitely fear," said Benjamin Prado, a member of the 38-year-old group Union Del Barrio. This weekend, the group will be sending out an unspecified number of patrols in various communities. Prado showed 10News a video recorded by the group on Thursday morning. In it, a tip from neighbors in City Heights led them to two vehicles believed to being driven by ICE agents. The group in turn informed people through different means, including social media posts about the presence of the agents.Another group taking action is the Council on American-Islamic Relations. On Thursday morning, national CAIR reissued a community advisory ahead of the impending raids."When you're stressed the first thing you forget is your rights," said Aleena Jun Nawabi, who heads outreach for CAIR San Diego.In the advisory, CAIR officials emphasize rights, including not having to open the front door unless there's a warrant.Those rights are also highlighted in cards and handouts that will be given out by Union Del Barrio. Sources tell 10News that San Diego is not expected to be included among the cities in this first round of raids.An ICE spokesperson issued the following statement: “Every day, as part of routine operations, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Fugitive Operations teams target and arrest criminal aliens and other individuals who are in violation of our nation’s immigration laws for the safety and security of our communities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating a suspicious death after a body was found near the San Diego River Saturday night. According to San Diego Police, a man’s body was found on the 9400 block of Friars Road near SDCCU Stadium around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Police say a preliminary investigation revealed signs of “possible trauma to the upper body.”“Out of an abundance of caution, San Diego Police Homicide detectives were called to the scene and are currently investigating the incident,” the department said. The man has been identified, but his identity isn’t being released until his family is notified.
