CARLSBAD, California — A California says it lost thousands in a bank scam that started with a notice about fraudulent debit charges.Krystal, who did not want to share her last name, lives in Carlsbad with her husband and their dog, Otis. Her husband is in the Marines and was recently in dive school in Florida. During that time, he received a call from what they thought was a USAA representative.USAA is a financial institution that serves primarily military families.“They told him there were fraudulent charges on his debit card and if they weren’t from him, that they’ll cancel the card and give him a new one and it will be sent to him,” Krystal said. She said it was from a USAA phone number.“They sent him a code through via text and had him repeat it,” Krystal said. “You could tell it was from USAA because there are previous text messages from USAA from other times they sent us the code,” Krystal said.Krystal said the caller said they needed to give her husband a new pin number and asked for the current one. In hindsight, it was a red flag, but at the time, he was busy evacuating from Hurricane Michael. The call sounded legitimate, even using the same song USAA uses when her husband was put on hold.“They had his debit card number. They mentioned me as a second account holder,” Krystal said. Before they knew it, their checking account was drained of more than ,800.“[I was] very angry, very heartbroken. Panicking,” Krystal said.Stephen Cobb with cybersecurity firm ESET said technology to make phone numbers look like a different one is increasingly used by crooks."A phone today is just a computer endpoint on a network and as such, its identity can be spoofed,” Cobb said.Krystal’s fraud claim was first denied by USAA, but she kept calling the bank, determined to get answers.“I finally got a hold of somebody in the financial crime department. She was very apologetic [and] said this isn’t the first time she’s heard of this today,” Krystal said.Krystal said she found her debit card was used in multiple transactions on the East Coast. The scammer has not been found. She was finally able to get a refund but has since switched banks. Now if she gets a call from a financial institution, she asks for a call back number to make sure it is real.“It makes me really angry and really sick. I feel really sick to my stomach about it. It makes me think of people that are veterans. What if their money was taken away?” Krystal said.On its website, USAA said this cybercriminal activity is on the rise. It reminds customers that it will never ask for any personal login information. 2609

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Joining Oceanside and California state beaches, Carlsbad city officials announced Friday that they will close beach parking lots for the July 4 weekend. The city says that beach parking lots will be closed July 4 and 5 in Carlsbad, over concerns of crowds from counties where beaches are closed traveling to the region.Carlsbad's decision comes after a letter from the Governor's Office of Emergency Services and days after Oceanside instituted a similar beach parking closure.RELATED: Crowds flock to San Diego beaches for Fourth of July weekendEarlier this week, San Diego County Supervisors said they did not plan to mandate county beaches to close and would leave it up to cities to decide themselves."At the time of writing, beaches under the jurisdiction of local governments within San Diego County are the only beaches without visitation restrictions throughout all of Southern California, and therefore are attracting thousands of residents from outside your coastal communities and creating significant potential for disease transmission, particularly in crowded restaurants, bars, retail, and hotels," Cal OES wrote in a letter to the cities of San Diego, Imperial Beach, Coronado, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. "To protect the public health of San Diegans and reduce the high potential transmission of this deadly disease in San Diego coastal businesses, we write to request that municipal governments do not open beach parking lots for the July 4th holiday weekend."Beaches in Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Barbara, and Venture Counties are closed this weekend amid surging coronavirus cases in the state.California closed state beach parking lots, including those in San Diego County, ahead of Saturday. 1776

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A newly discovered comet is streaking past Earth, providing a stunning nighttime show after buzzing the sun and expanding its tail.Comet Neowise was spotted by the NASA space telescope bearing that name in March.Since then, the comet — called comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE— has been spotted by several NASA spacecraft, observatories, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The celestial snowball swept within Mercury's orbit a week ago. Its close proximity to the sun caused dust and gas to burn off its surface and create an even bigger debris tail.NASA says the comet is about 3 miles across. "From its infrared signature, we can tell that it is about 5 kilometers [3 miles] across, and by combining the infrared data with visible-light images, we can tell that the comet's nucleus is covered with sooty, dark particles left over from its formation near the birth of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago," said Joseph Masiero, NEOWISE deputy principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. The comet will be visible across the Northern Hemisphere until mid-August, when it heads back toward the outer solar system.People wishing to catch a glimpse of the glowing comet can spot it as it swings through the inner solar system, but its nearness to the Sun creates some observing challenges. As it speeds away from the Sun, NASA says the comet will begin to make its appearance in the evening sky shortly after sunset on July 11 or July 12, depending on local conditions.“Observers might be able to see the comet's central core, or nucleus, with the naked eye in dark skies; using binoculars will give viewers a good look at the fuzzy comet and its long, streaky tail,” said NASA. 1759
