BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping's visits to Bangladesh, Laos, New Zealand and Australia had contributed to promoting friendship, mutual trust and cooperation between China and these countries, a senior Chinese official said Thursday.Xi paid official visits to the four nations between June 14 and June 24, meeting with leaders and exchanging views on a wide range of issues, witnessing the signing of a series of bilateral cooperation agreements, addressing business forums and attending cultural activities."The visits boasted great achievements. It was a successful trip of friendship and substantial cooperation," said China's Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun, who accompanied Xi for the tour.During the 11-day visits, Xi visited seven cities in four nations and attended more than 50 official activities, which were reported abundantly and positively by the media of the host countries and international community, Zhang said.CLOSER FRIENDSHIP, MUTUAL TRUSTSenior officials and the public, especially the business world, warmly welcomed Xi's visits. XI'AN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged local authorities to keep flood casualties and losses to minimum and to launch reconstruction work in a timely and orderly way.Hui was speaking during an inspection of flood-affected areas in Weinan and Shangluo cities in north China's Shaanxi Province from Aug. 2 to 3.He visited affected residents, as well as soldiers who were fighting the floods, saying the flood work had entered a crucial stage.Since mid July, many areas in Shaanxi Province have seen continuous rain, leading to frequent natural disasters, such as floods, mountain torrents and mud-rock flows.Continuous rainstorms caused mud-rock flows in Zhulinguan Village of Danfeng County, Shangluo city, on July 23 and 24. Hui visited the village and urged officials to address food, drinking water, clothing and housing issues.He also called for the repair of roads and resumption of water and electricity supplies as soon as possible.Homes, schools and hospitals should be reconstruction priorities, he said.Meteorologists forecast higher than average rainfall this month along the province's Hanjiang and Weihe rivers. Hui ordered local governments to intensify flood warnings, improve response plans, reinforce reservoirs and river embankments and replenish emergency materials, so as to be well prepared for more rain and floods.

YUSHU, Qinghai, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the quake zones in China's far northwestern Qinghai Province would be quadrupled by 2015 on the basis of that of last year, Luo Huining, governor of the province said here Friday."By the end of China's 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), the GDP in Qinghai quake zones would reach four times as much as that of 2009, with the service industry accounting for 45 percent of it," Luo said during an exclusive interview with Xinhua, exactly 100 days after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Yushu in April.The earthquake left 2,698 people dead and 270 missing.Luo said local authorities would focus on improving public services and promoting urbanization of the quake zones during the reconstruction phase.According to Luo, authorities would try to help all farmers and herdsmen in the region settle down within three years, upgrade their housing facilities, and provide them with basic access to safe drinking water."By the end of this year, local government would invest 5.55 billion yuan to rebuild 80 percent of farmers' houses in the quake zones," Luo said. Total investment in housing reconstruction in the regions would reach 9.6 billion yuan within three years.

BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education on Friday said that Taiwan's new amended laws would be beneficial to the cross-Strait educational exchanges.On Thursday, the Taiwan regional legislature adopted amendments to three laws, which would allow local colleges to accept students from the Chinese mainland and recognize degrees from mainland schools, except for medical schools.The ministry said in a statement that Taiwan should not put in place discriminatory policies that might harm mainland students."We hope related authorities in Taiwan could make good plans, offering attractive colleges and majors for, and take effective measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of mainland students," said the statement.Under the amended laws, mainland students can not apply for schools and colleges related to the island's security nor attend the exams of civil servants and professionals such as doctors and lawyers.Taiwan's education department said in a statement that it would issue two detailed regulations in line with the amendments in September. The first group of postgraduate students are expected to arrive next March and the first college students can enroll next September.
