LA JOLLA (CNS) - The city of San Diego will close Children's Pool beach Saturday in preparation of harbor seal pupping season, city officials announced Friday.The city began closing the beach in 2014, spurred by environmental activists concerned that beachgoers were disturbing the young pinnipeds. The city has been tied up in litigation for most of the time since then, dealing with suits from a group called Friends of the Children's Pool and other beach access advocates who claimed the closures violated the state Coastal Act and the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.In June of this year, a state appeals court ruled in favor of the city, allowing the closures to continue.At the time, beach access advocates threatened to take the complaint to the state Supreme Court, but the matter hasn't moved that far yet.The city opened the beach in 1932 as a refuge for inexperienced swimmers due to a seawall that keeps out oncoming ocean waves. Harbor seals began convening on the beach in the 1990s and have since used the relatively calm beach area to birth and raise seal pups. California Coastal Commission officials have also suggested that the water is unsafe due to the seals and their excrement, offering another reason for residents to stay away from the beach for the next several months.The beach will be closed through May 15, 2019 to accommodate the seals and their pups. City park rangers and lifeguards will monitor the beach throughout the rest of winter and the duration of spring to keep both members of the public and local wildlife safe. 1567

(AP) — Mississippi's largest religious group says state lawmakers have a moral obligation to remove the Confederate battle emblem from the state flag because many people are "hurt and shamed" by the symbol. The Mississippi Baptist Convention has more than 500,000 members in a state of 3 million people. The convention said Tuesday that many see the flag as "a relic of racism and a symbol of hatred."It joins the other influential groups, including the governing body for college athletics, that are calling for Mississippi to change its flag. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (KGTV) - Multiple people are dead, and injured after a fellow gamer fired about a dozen rounds in the middle of a tournament in Florida. A gaming expert says there was limited security.Gayle Dickie, CEO of Gamer World News, said these kinds of tournaments happen all over the world and all the time."This is horrifying, really," she said.The shots rang out on the second and final day of the Madden 19 Tournament. Players entered Chicago Pizza on the first floor of Jacksonville Landing and Dickie said there was little security, "It's unfortunate because it was a smaller event, I mean it wasn't a large event. If you go to events like the Barclay's Center or Staple's, you're going to go through a metal detector."Inside, gamers entered their own world, "it is probably the biggest quality of a gamer, to have that intense focus, so everybody was focused on gameplay." Dickie said that made it easy for 24-year-old David Katz to find his targets."It sounds like he knew who he was going after, so you know and you saw the two players sitting there. I saw the video and you can see them sitting there, and it didn't take him long, you know, obviously he knew what he was looking for," she said.Dickie said gamers can be as young as 12-years-old at these competitions."It's just shaken the core of the gamer community. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - Neighbors are calling for more safety measures after surveillance video captured a fiery collision at an intersection in Jamul.A week ago, just before 5 p.m., Marc Burnett was opening up his off-road racing shop along Campo Road, when he heard it."I heard the skid marks hitting, and then I heard the boom," said Burnett.He ran outside and was greeted by flames."I just saw flames in the air. I saw a lot of flames. I saw the guy on the ground. He was on fire," said Burnett.Burnett raced back inside."I got the fire extinguisher, and had to put the motorcycle out -- and him," said Burnett.Burnett says the motorcycle driver, a man in his 30s, suffered serious burns to his hands and legs, but survived."He was very lucky that he survived," said Burnett.Burnett even more amazed when he looked at his surveillance video.In it you can see the truck pulling into the intersection from Maxfield Road and stop, before the eastbound motorcycle slams into the side of the truck, exploding into flames."Very scary to see that video. Didn’t know it was that bad until I saw it," said Burnett.Sadly, it was not unfamiliar.Burnett, who’s been in the area for more than 15 years, says he’s seen the aftermath of some eight serious accidents at that intersection, including a person killed crossing the road."It’s kind of a blind turn ... People coming out where the truck coming out ... It's hard to judge," said Burnett.Burnett is now lobbying for a traffic light at that intersection, which is often busy with casino traffic."Drivers are passing semi trucks on the turn. It's dangerous. If there was a light, people would have to slow down," said Burnett.The CHP says they investigation into the accident is ongoing.ABC 10News reached out to county officials about the neighbors' concerns and are waiting to hear back. 1841
