SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Unified School District is warning parents and staff of a breach involving the personal data of students and staff.District official said in a release the breach dating back to January 2018 may have impacted the personal data of as many as 500,000 students enrolled in the district between the 2008-2009 and 2018-2019 school years. The data is believe to have been accessed by a phishing email effort, according to the district. Those staff members and parents affected have been alerted by SDUSD.Officials said investigators began looking into reports of phishing emails in October 2018. At that time, roughly 50 staff members whose accounts were compromised had security on their accounts reset immediately, according to the district. An investigation determined that unauthorized access was gained to the district’s network services, including their student database. The student database contains personal identifying information, potential health information, scheduling, and grade information. The district says it has since taken steps to prevent unauthorized access from reoccurring and to "eliminate" any continuing threat.SDUSD told 10News the breach wasn't announced until now because officials wanted to verify all their information and not compromise the investigation.“Data security has become an increasing concern for public agencies, corporations and private citizens nationwide,” Toren Allen, executive director of San Diego Unified’s Integrated Technology Department, said. “We are constantly reviewing our practices and systems in an effort to find efficiencies and to identify potential vulnerabilities.”The district recommends that anyone whose data may have been accessed to remain vigilant of their credit cards and account and contact a credit reporting agency to notify them of the breach of information. Parents or staff members can request an identity theft/fraud alert, get credit freeze information, or order a free credit report by through any of the following credit reporting agencies:EquifaxExperianTransUnion 2078

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Shanna Ben-Moshe says the Torrey Pines Glider Port is one of her favorite places in San Diego. But on a visit last month, she saw something that ruined the trip.“I didn’t really know what to do because I was so shocked to see that in a place that I go to all the time," Ben-Moshe said. She's talking about a remote control plane - with a Nazi swastika painted on the rudder.“My great-grandma is a holocaust survivor,” Ben-Moshe said. “She was in Auschwitz for a long time. She lost all her family.”Ben-Moshe took a picture of the plane just before she left. She shared it with Brian Blacher, who co-runs a nonprofit group called Shield of David, which fights anti-Semitism.Blacher went back to the gliderport to investigate. The plane wasn't there, but a different pilot explained that it's common for people to fly German replica warplanes.“It's hurtful," Blacher said. "We've got a big Jewish community, we've got holocaust survivors living here. He's like, 'it's a plane, what are you so upset about', kind of deal."It's unclear who flew the remote control plane, and there wasn't anyone flying those kinds of planes when ABC 10News went to the gliderport on Wednesday. Robin Marien, the flight director at the gliderport, declined to comment on the swastika plane. He noted, however, that radio control pilots do tend to fly planes with vintage design.Ben-Moshe, now back in college in Wisconsin, says this won't stop her from going back to the gliderport. “It's a place that I love," she said, "and I don’t want anything to take away from that." 1575

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Smoke from a fire burning in Mexico is visible throughout San Diego Thursday. The blaze is burning roughly five miles into Mexico amid hot, windy conditions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego's transit service is getting millions in state funding, as part of billions being awarded to projects throughout the state.San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System was awarded .09 million to update transit routes, add zero-emission buses, and create a new route between Imperial Beach and the Otay Mesa Border Crossing.MTS said they plan to purchase 11 zero-emission buses to operate on the proposed Route 925 between Otay Mesa Transit Center and IB.RELATED: Under-utilized MTS land could be used for affordable housing, report saysThe transit service will also use the funds to improve the America Plaza station, Old Town Transit Center, and rail infrastructure on select lines.“This is a highly competitive grant program. This grant funding will help our efforts to maintain a solid state-of-good repair and introduce zero-emissions buses to the market,” MTS Chief Executive Officer Paul Jablonski said.SANDAG was also awarded .76 million to make safety improvements and station upgrades along University Ave.RELATED: San Diego drivers spend more time on freeway that most Californians“This funding will help make San Diego’s public transit system safer, faster and more accessible,” Senate Leader Toni Atkins said in a release. “I’m glad to see these badly needed improvements get underway.” The funds were made available by the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program through SB 1. 1454

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Scientists at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute are working to replenish the California Halibut population. In October, they released 2,300 juvenile halibut into Mission Bay. Those fish were bred, born and raised at the institute. They hope it's just the start of a robust replenishment program."The species is pretty heavily depleted and for that reason, they're a good candidate to help boost the species," says Mark Drawbridge, the Institute's Director of the Sustainable Seafood Program.Recent surveys show the California Halibut is down to 14 percent of what its population should be. The most severe drop has come in Southern California.Hubbs hopes it can replicate the success it had with the White Seabass. It has released nearly 2.5 million seabass into the wild in the last 35 years."A lot of the process is transferable from one species to another," says Drawbridge. The Dick Laub Fisheries Replenishment Program oversees every step of the process, from breeding to release. Drawbridge says they've seen success in every phase so far."Our survival rates from egg to juvenile stage are typically 20 percent or higher," he says. "Compare that to the wild, where it would be a fraction of a percent. That's more than adequate to produce tens of thousands of fish."The next step is seeing how the halibut survive in the wild. The Institute put stainless steel trackers in each fish and will monitor them over the next few years. The program is funded through private donations, many of which come from fisherman who need a healthy halibut population to make a living. 1602
