BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- With a series of measures being adopted to curb price spikes, the Chinese government is confident of keeping prices at a reasonable level, Premier Wen Jiabao said Sunday morning."Inflation expectations are more dire than inflation itself," Wen said, urging people to remain confident and government agencies to act to stabilize prices.The premier made the remarks while answering a listener's question during a radio broadcast by China National Radio.The consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose to a 28-month high of 5.1 percent year on year in November, according to government statistics.Food price rises contributed to 74 percent of the CPI growth for the month.Wen said the country had a good agricultural supply base which gave the government confidence that it could stabilize prices.In a bid to control inflation, the government has also increased the bank reserve requirement ratio six times and lifted interest rates twice this year, he added.Further, authorities have introduced a package of measures including cutting fees for transportation of agriculture products and intensifying the crackdown on food price speculation.The overall price level, especially of major consumer goods, has now begun to drop, Wen said.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's anti-graft authorities announced on Monday in a statement that during the year it had found 21.5 billion yuan (3.24 billion U.S.Dollar) of public money held in unauthorized departmental coffers.The probe was led by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China.The probe had put government agencies, public institutions, social groups, state-owned and state holding enterprises under scrutiny, and had uncovered 45,593 cases of public money being held in unauthorized departmental coffers, involving a total of 21.5 billion yuan.A total of 2,669 officials involved in these cases have been punished, also according to the statement.

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Foreign direct investment (FDI) into China rose for the 15th consecutive month in October, indicating China remains a favored investment destination for foreign businesses.Inbound FDI increased 7.86 percent year on year in October to 7.663 billion U.S. dollars, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Tuesday.The October figure means inbound FDI for the first 10 months of the year totaled 82.003 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 15.71 percent.MOC spokesman Yao Jian said at a press conference China remains a hot spot for foreign investors.Foreign businesses have begun to shift their investments from export-orientated sectors to domestic market-orientated businesses because of China's improved legal system and its expanding market, he said.In the first 10 months of the year, the manufacturing sector received 47.59 percent of FDI inflows while the services industry got 45 percent.A total of 21,181 foreign-invested enterprises were approved for establishment during the 10-month period, up 16.62 percent from a year earlier.In September inbound FDI grew 6.14 percent year on year.The acceleration in the rate of inbound FDI growth was due to the U.S.'s second round of quantitative easing, some analysts explained.Yao denied the link but said the Chinese government is keeping an eye on liquidity.

BELGRADE, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Celebrating 30 years of cooperation and fraternal relations between the capitals of Serbia and China, an art exhibit entitled "The Beauty of Beijing" was opened in the Old Palace in Belgrade on Tuesday.Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas extended a welcome to the visiting Beijing delegation, underscoring years of cooperation and cultural exchanges."For us the bridge we are going to build together is important, along with our cultural components which will complement our desire for Belgrade in 2020 to be the European 'cultural capital'," said Djilas, making reference to the 1,507-meter bridge over the Danube River to be constructed by Chinese firms. BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Major foreign media have been positive in their coverage of Chinese President Hu Jintao's recent interview with two U.S. newspapers.On the eve of his state visit to the United States, Hu answered questions concerning major domestic and international issues in a written interview with reporters from Wall Street Journal and Washington Post on Monday.Japanese newspaper Tokyo Shimbun said President Hu stressed the need to reform the U.S. dollar-based international financial system and expressed disagreement with the U.S. criticism of the slow appreciation of the Chinese yuan.
