BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Wednesday pledged to cement legislative ties.The pledge came out of talks in Beijing between Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China Wu Bangguo and Chairman of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) Choe Tae Bok.In his opening remarks, Wu said the meeting was his third with Choe this year.The first meeting took place when DPRK leader Kim Jong Il visited China in May. Choe was then a part of Kim's entourage.Wu and Choe then met on the sidelines of an international parliamentary leaders' meeting in Geneva in July."Three meetings in one year reflects our special relationship," Wu said, adding that he expects Choe's visit to boost bilateral relations and ties between the two nations' legislatures.Saying China and DPRK are good neighbors, Wu noted that China-DPRK relations have withstood the tests of changes in the international arena.China-DPRK relations have witnessed significant progress this year, Wu said, citing DPRK leader Kim Jong Il's two visits to China during which Chinese President Hu and Kim reached a number of important agreements.Wu said it is the unswerving principle of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government to cement and develop friendly ties with the DPRK.China hopes to work with the DPRK to carry out the consensus of their leaders while maintaining high-level exchanges and stepping up strategic consultation, Wu said.Choe hailed China's remarkable achievements of the reform and opening-up and China's modernization drive, expressing hope the Chinese people will make further progress in building socialism with Chinese characteristics.On legislative ties, Wu said the NPC and the SPA play crucial roles in their countries' politics.The NPC hopes to work closely with the SPA on state governance and legal system building while boosting communication and consultation on international and regional parliamentary organizations, Wu said.Choe began a five-day visit to China Tuesday. After spending time in Beijing, he will travel to northeast China's Jilin Province.
BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has ordered a fresh crackdown on the infringement of well-known foreign and domestic brands' intellectual property rights (IPRs).Greater efforts must be made to fight the production and sale of pirated books, audio, video, software, medicine, food and agricultural products, Liu Jinguo, deputy minister of public security, said at a meeting in Beijing Friday, according to a statement posted on the MPS website Saturday.The special nationwide campaign started Friday and will last until March 2011.At a Nov. 5 meeting, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged government agencies to target the root causes of IPRs infringement while strengthening IPRs protection.In a statement Xinhua received Friday, the MPS said Chinese police in a special March 2006 operation uncovered 3,775 cases of IPRs infringement.In a July 2007 campaign conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Intelligence, Chinese police arrested over 20 in connection to the cases.

BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday said it expected a trilateral meeting in Washington next week to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula, promote dialogue rather than inflame the situation."As the situation on the Korean Peninsula is highly complicated and sensitive, we expect the meeting to ease tensions and promote dialogue, rather than heighten tensions and intensify confrontation," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said in a statement Thursday night.Jiang made the statement, referring to a meeting among the foreign ministers of the United States, Japan and Republic of Korea, which is scheduled for next Monday in Washington.
BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) channeled more than 1 billion yuan (about 151.8 million U.S. Dollars) raised by the lottery to public welfare programs in 2010, according to a statement issued by the MCA Tuesday.China's government-run lottery raised 30 billion yuan for public welfare funds in 2010, according to the MCA.Half of the funds were allocated to welfare projects administered by central authorities, including the MCA, and half to welfare projects organized by local governments.The quota for the MCA to use at its own discretion was 1.053 billion yuan, which was mainly directed for improving the welfare of the aged, the disabled, children, and those impacted by natural disasters.Of the 1 billion yuan, 604 million yuan went to providing care and rehabilitation to the aged and the disabled.Additionally, 417 million yuan went to welfare programs for children, including providing care and rehabilitation to disabled orphans, children suffering cerebral palsy, AIDS-impacted children, and providing shelters to homeless juveniles, among others.The rest of the fund went to government procurement of social services, and retrofitting incineration and burial infrastructures in the underdeveloped west and central regions.
