SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Arts Park @ Chollas Creek has been helping young people for almost 20 years now."The reason this place was started was there was a lot of vandalism in the community. I was part of the problem then, I consider myself part of the solution," said Jose Venegas, a co-founder, and Program Coordinator at Writerz Blok. During his teenage years, Venegas turned to graffiti. "It was that or gang bang really, to be honest, I grew up in a neighborhood where there was a lot of gang activity, a lot of drugs."A twist of fate led his friends to tag a vacant property in Southeast San Diego owned by the Jacobs Center. Rather than make the teens someone else's problem, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation embraced them, donating the space and funding materials. "We encounter a lot of youth who show artistic expression but have never had a mentor or seen professional artists doing murals, graffiti," said Bennett Peji, Vice President of Impact and Partnership for the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. Their mission is to foster a thriving community envisioned and realized by its residents.“The identify of a place should really reflect the the community that lives there but that’s not often the case," said Peji. Jacobs Center donated the property and funded materials to make the Arts Park a reality. Writerz Blok artists have able to help hundreds of teens and they now do workshops in high schools as well as the East Mesa Juvenile Detention Center."It's a very soothing feeling, it's like therapy," said Venegas. "I feel like this place has done more than offer a space to paint."The Arts Park is open Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. It will also be open one Saturday a month in the summer. 1755

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s City Council voted 6-3 Monday evening to approve a five-year lease extension for the Campland on the Bay campground. The city struck a deal with Campland to expand into De Anza Cove and remove the crumbling mobile home park. Earlier in the day Monday, competing rallies took place outside council chambers. The issue on the agenda Monday – the future of about 75 acres on the northwest portion of Mission Bay. Currently, it’s an RV Park next to a mobile home park crumbling with asbestos and warning signs keeping the public out. The operator of the RV park is terminating its lease later in June. Campland on the Bay has operated for 50 years just to the west. It’s offering to take over the lease for the RV park and add the mobile home park for five years. It would do ,000,000 of improvements, including getting rid of old homes. A group called the ReWild Mission Bay Coalition is fighting back. The coalition wants the city to pursue restoring the area to its natural habitat, fearing that entering into what’s supposed to be a temporary arrangement could end up becoming a long-tern solution. The program recognizes schools based on performance and progress on state indicators. Those indicators include test scores, suspension rates and conditions and climate, according to the State Superintendent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students and teachers from two classes at Sage Canyon School in Carmel Valley will have to return to online distance learning for two weeks after two people tested positive for COVID-19.In a statement to ABC 10News, Jenni Huh, the Del Mar Union School District Director of Student Services, said:“The District has confirmed two positive cases of COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School. All students and staff who were directly exposed have been contacted and will be quarantining for 14 days. The District has been in consultation with the San Diego County Department of Public Health.”Parent Amy Berkley said she was notified of the two positive cases on Sunday. She has two sons who attend the school and said her third-grader was in the same class as one of the people who tested positive.“They had two students in the school test positive, one was in first grade and the other in third grade,” Berkley said. “We got the notification on Sunday, and by Monday morning, all class materials were available for pickup, really easy and convenient.”While the positive cases are alarming for some parents, Berkley, who is also the PTA president, said she was pleased with how the situation was handled. Her son didn’t miss a school day as the classrooms impacted transitioned back to distance learning Monday.“We picked up a Chromebook, learning packet, homework worksheet, whiteboard all the material they’ll need; it was very well thought out.”According to the Del Mar Union School District’s safe reopening plan, if a student or teacher tests positive for COVID-19, the whole class will quarantine for 14 days, and learning will be offered remotely.
