The flu vaccine may have an important benefit beyond protecting against influenza: It may also prevent heart attacks, especially in those at high risk, experts say."It's been a long time that people have recognized that association with flu season and development of a heart attack," said Dr. Kevin Schwartz, an infectious disease physician at Public Health Ontario. When it comes to preventing heart attacks in people with cardiovascular problems, experts have put getting the flu vaccine on par with long-term measures such as quitting smoking or taking one's medication for high blood pressure. 610
The China tariffs are back on.On Tuesday, the White House said the administration would proceed with its proposal to impose 25 percent tariffs on billion worth of goods from China, and place new limits on Chinese investments in US high-tech industries. The decision comes after top administration officials have tried to dampen fears of a trade war.Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said a trade war with China was "on hold" less than 10 days ago. And Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross is expected in Beijing on Saturday to help ease trade tensions between the two major trading partners.Beijing has previously pledged to retaliate against the 25 percent tariffs. In a brief statement, the White House said the president plans to take "multiple steps" to protect domestic technology and intellectual property from certain "discriminatory and burdensome trade practices by China."The latest step follows a March report by the US Trade Representative Office, which undertook a seven-month investigation of China's handling of technology transfers and intellectual property, according to the White House's statement."The United States will implement specific investment restrictions and enhanced export controls for Chinese persons and entities related to the acquisition of industrially significant technology, the White House said in a statement. The final list of covered imports subject to tariffs will be announced by June 15. Those tariffs will take effect "shortly thereafter."Proposed investment restrictions will be announced by June 30 and also take effect at a later date.The-CNN-Wire 1603

The drop in gun sales has lead to deep job cuts at Sturm RugerOn Wednesday, the company reported a 21% sales decline for 2017. Thursday it disclosed that it has cut 700 jobs, or more than a quarter of its staff, over the last 13 months. That leaves it with 1,750 workers."When we reduced production in 2017, we had to make some difficult decisions," said CEO Chris Killoy, on a call with analysts Thursday. Many of the jobs were eliminated through attrition. The company also had 320 temporary employees a year ago who have since left the company. In January, the company needed to further reduce staff, prompting it to lay off an additional 60 workers.Gun sales have been sharply lower across the industry since President Donald Trump was elected. Fears that Hillary Clinton would win the presidency and seek tougher gun control laws drove record sales through 2016, and encouraged retailers to stock up on inventory. With the election of Trump and Republicans in control of both houses of Congress, those fears greatly abated.Killoy said that 2017 FBI background checks, which correspond roughly to purchases, fell 11%. Retailers also cut back on purchases to reduce inventory."2017 was a challenging year for the firearm industry," Killoy. But he said as a result of the job cuts, "we're better positioned to compete in 2018."There has been more talk about gun control in the week since the shooting of 17 students and staff at a Florida high school, led by many of the students and families from that school.President Trump and some Republicans, including Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, have voiced new support for some gun control measures. But it's too soon to say whether those efforts will affect gun sales.Killoy did not mention the gun control debate during his conference call, although he did express sympathy for victims of the Florida shooting."Like all Americans, we struggle with the shock and sadness of these terrible events," he said.Sturm Ruger is not the only company to report a drop in sales. Overall the industry has reported a sales decline of more than 0 million in 2017.Gun maker Remington has warned it plans to file for bankruptcy protection soon. Killoy was asked about whether Sturm Ruger would be interested in buying Remington, given that it has a strong balance sheet. Ruger's cash on hand fell by nearly million during the year, but it still has .5 million and no debt. He wouldn't rule out a deal for Remington, but wouldn't comment on it directly."We're watching that closely," he said the coming bankruptcy case. "We wish them well going through that process. With million cash on hand, it may provide some opportunities down the road." 2727
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Medical Association are working with the Ad Council to educate people about the flu vaccine, particularly in communities of color.“I understand. As an African American physician, I understand some of the mistrust and distrust,” said Dr. Patrice Harris with the American Medical Association.CDC data shows not enough people get the flu shot.People die unnecessarily and unvaccinated African Americans have twice the hospitalization rate due to flu.“And when we consider other things like diabetes, heart and lung disease, asthma and other conditions that can get exasperated in the presence of the flu, it’s particularly protective for people with those conditions,” said Dr. Leandris Liburd, CDC Associate Director for Minority Health. There's more than 50 years of data on the safety of the flu vaccine. There is the potential now for a “twindemic.”“And so, by taking care of our health, we are saying we care about our family members, our community members and we are taking care of their health as well,” said Harris. The CDC anticipates delivering nearly 200 million flu vaccine doses.CVS and Walgreens say they plan to give as much as double the amount of vaccines as they did last season. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body to be fully protected.Click here to learn where to get your vaccine. 1387
The College Football Playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl is moving to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.Bill Hancock, executive director of the College Football Playoff, made the announcement in a statement Saturday night on the eve of the release of the final playoff rankings. The College Football Playoff and Rose Bowl "mutually agreed" to move the game because of the growing number of coronavirus cases in Southern California."We are pleased that parents and loved ones will now be able to see their students play in the game," Hancock said. The move came after several coaches expressed their dismay about possibly traveling to the Rose Bowl to play in a game where players' families wouldn't be allowed.Los Angeles County is under a stay-at-home order that took effect earlier this month. Pasadena, home to the Rose Bowl, has its own public health department but has mostly followed the county's practices during the pandemic.A source told The Associated Press that the Rose Bowl sought an exemption from the state of California to allow families to attend but was denied twice.Hancock said the game will still be played in the mid-afternoon on New Year's Day."We are very grateful to Rose Bowl officials and the city of Pasadena," Hancock said. "They have worked hard to listen to the concerns of the CFP, the teams that might have played there, and their state and government officials. The Tournament of Roses has acted in the best interest of the people who live in Southern California, and we're grateful to Cotton Bowl and AT&T Stadium officials for their ability to make this late switch possible." 1624
