SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Boulevard Fitness in University Heights is open for business, with a line of people wrapped around the building waiting to go inside to workout on Tuesday, even though they’re not supposed to be open.Last week, San Diego County Supervisors said the county would be cracking down on businesses that violate public health orders put into place due to the coronavirus pandemic.A gym owner in Ramona was recently charged with several misdemeanors for staying open for indoor workouts. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office said Peter San Nicolas, owner of Ramona Fitness Center, faces five charges that each carry ,000 fines. However, at Boulevard Fitness, staff members told ABC 10News they’ve had visits from police telling them they should not be open, but nothing more. The gym on El Cajon Boulevard is limiting the number of people inside and increasing cleaning and other measures to try to limit the risk of potential virus exposure to gym members.A San Diego Police Department spokesperson said officers are responding to complaints about businesses that are open when they’re not supposed to be, but police are -- at this point -- only educating businesses that may be in violation of the health order and not physically forcing any shutdowns.San Nicolas is holding a rally in Ramona Tuesday night in hopes of getting the word out that small businesses, including gyms like his, are still trying desperately to survive -- even if, in some cases, it means facing charges to stay open. 1526

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As San Diegans gear up for the Fourth of July, a new Gallup Poll puts American patriotism at a nearly 20-year low.The poll blames the country's sharply polarized political climate. It found that 45 percent of those polled were "extremely proud" to be American, while 70 percent said they were "proud.""Patriotism isn't something that you can force," said David Povlick, who was visiting downtown San Diego Wednesday. "It's something that people have to feel. I think it's being forced right now, and so that makes people rebel a bit."RELATED: California among least-patriotic states in the nation, according to reportStill, the heart of the city was filled with American flags and people sporting USA apparel the day before the Fourth of July. Mike Ismail, who owns Alamo Flags in SeaPort Village, gives out thousands of free American flags for the holiday each year. Ismail said he has visited many countries around the world, making him even more proud to be an American. Ismail said the holiday is above politics. "We're all united as one, it should be all that way," he said. "Democrat, Republican, all that aside, we're all American, that's what it's all about."Gallup says 22 percent of Democrats said they were extremely proud to be American, while 76 percent of Republicans shared that sentiment. 1332

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Average rainfall and warmer temperatures, that’s what the San Diego office of the National Weather Service is forecasting this winter. With a few windows of opportunity for significant precipitation from December to March, it will be a warm and dry winter with more Santa Ana winds expected, according to City News Service. The National Weather Service predicts that San Diego’s best chance for rain in the near future will be in mid-November.The maps below show what the rest of November is expected to bring as far as rain and temperatures: RELATED: Check today's forecastRecently, winters in Southern California have trended toward fewer rainy days with heavier precipitation.“If we don’t get that rain in mid-November, then we’re talking about severe fire weather conditions again like last year going into December,” National Weather Service meteorologist Alex Tardy said.10News meteorologist Megan Perry said El Nino conditions are starting to develop. “El Nino is favored (70 to 75% chance) to form and continue through the winter. While historically El Nino favors wetter than normal conditions to the Desert Southwest, that doesn't always happen.”More recently, La Nina, or cool equatorial ocean temperatures, has coincided with wet winters in San Diego. The most recent El Nino event in 2015-2016 didn’t bring much rainfall to the region while the La Nino of 2016-2017 brought heavy rain and snow to California, carrying the state out of drought.“At this point, it's a wait and see and hopefully we'll get more rain - we need it after last winter finished as the second driest on record,” Perry said. 1650

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Before Vice President Mike Pence made his way to Coronado, he spent the morning at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel. The Vice President and Second lady stayed there during their San Diego Visit. A few protestors inflated the now well-known "Baby Trump" outside of the hotel; It's possible the Vice President got a look at the giant balloon. "We're hoping that the Vice President sees this and sees that there is resistance here in San Diego," says protestor Will Johnson. The giant balloon was an attention grabber for many who saw it on Park Boulevard. "I knew he was coming to town, but I didn't know he was staying here," says Kate Permenter. Permenter is in town for a convention and staying at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, saying, "So last night people kind of started freaking out."Outside of the hotel, security checked every car making its way into the garage. Hotel guests say there are dozens of police officers and secret service agents inside of the hotel. "At every entrance, there are cops just kind of staring at you."Dozens of officers escorted the motorcade as the Vice President left downtown this morning. Protestors said there would be another demonstration outside of the hotel at 7 p.m. but "Baby Trump" will not be in attendance. 1270
